Actually, he missed out the BIGGEST plus point. If you snorkel with an ordinary mask for two hours, the salt water makes your lips burn, and even crack. It also hurts your gums. But with the full face ones, the salt water doesn't touch your lips, (no burning or cracking), and you don't have to bite on the snorkel, which is much more comfortable. But they are terrible for diving down - he's right there. Basically, these are great on the surface, and terrible for diving, so take your pick.
Hi. Can't find a definite answer to my question. I'm a complete novice, but am frightened to use the normal type because I have dentures. As you've used a full face, do you think it would work for me?
@alisonlee3314 I also have dentures and using denture adhesive cream which greatly helps with old school snorkeling, i only watched this cos i now live in middle of Canada and while lakes are fun to swim some are not that clean to occasionally drink water while swimming and diving, i no longer dive as much as i swimm and this would help with that whole idea of keeping my mouth and nose clear of that water ( still looks goofy 🤪). So basically yes it would help you unless like he said you want to dive, having face underwater while swimming would be perfect as long as the mask has no problems, but you can try that denture cream if you want to go old school, it holds dentures in place better then my original teeth (pun intended 😀) and i can bite and chew apples and snorkels for a while, hope this help you.
I'm an experienced snorkeler and I just bought a Cressi Duke Full Face Mask. It says you can't go underwater with it. How the hell am I going catch lobsters ? See ya !!!!
I live in the Philippines and snorkeling is my passion. When I go out, I take both. If my dive is shallow, for just looking around, the full face is great, and provides a much more stable platform for an attached Go-Pro...but for spearfishing, I always stick to the traditional, tried and true combo.
Did u just say 2 feet max diving, no way i spearfish using fullface mask to max of 5 meters. I guess u have low tolerance for pain. Its just mind over matter train yourself for pain and gradually u can dive much deeper.
I tried one of these out on a recent trip to St. Thomas and have to say it is really nice not having to constantly clear the snorkel and it did not fog up once during hour long snorkels. His cons are somewhat legit, but probably most snorkelers do not dive down > 5', if at all. Great to just float on top and observe IMO.
If you have to constantly clear the snorkel while not going down... you're definitely doing something very wrong. And blowing out the snorkel is no problem whatsoever. And a properly fitting mask doesn't usually fog up once you know your mask. And going down is 50% of the fun for many people, why pretending most people wouldn't do it? I really don't understand this comment. Have a great day!
Been using these masks for approximately 10 years now and have enjoyed them immensely. I agree that they aren't much good for deep water and if that is where we are snorkeling I use conventional mask and snorkel. We are still using the original ones we purchased and have never had any mechanical issues with them. Simply love their simplicity! Trust me, if you ever did have an issue with it and needed to get it off, adrenalin aside, you would RIP it off instantly!
why on earth am I even watching this video when I dont plan on going snorking any time in the next 10 years, and i cant even swim i guess i will never know
You can spit your snorkeling out and continue breathing on the surface in a panick. With these you have to mess around with something strapped to your face. If it becomes full of water you lose breathing and vision. Full face masks are bath toys. There is a reason they are known as "death masks" and "drowning aids"
Look at the video of Full Face Snorkel mask vs. old style mask ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lLjhYMLKHM0.html My Training video of how to use a full face snorkel mask ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RoAllDZVCXc.html
If you don't want fog in your mask just cover the inside of the glasses with saliva, let it rest for a minute, wash it off with water and then don't touch glasses with your fingers. My instructor teached me to do this in my first lesson and I never had a fog in my mask ever.
There is another advantage of the traditional mask and snorkel. You can use them both whether you are snorkeling or scuba diving. Since even when you are scuba diving you still carry a snorkel with you. The mask works for skin diving and snorkeling since the regulator fits underneath the traditional mask.
as a resident of Hawai'i, I see these a lot of different snorkels around here. I think the biggest plus to these full-face masks is the auto close valve when you dive down, or tilt your head to far. I've used a normal snorkel, and on many occasions at the beach, have seen people using a traditional snorkel, just to have Namaka almost kill them. You tilt your head wrong, or look at something and ocean water floods into the tube and next thing you know, life guards are bailing from towers as someone chokes to death with a literal lungs full of water. I understand that snorkeling should be taught in a class that people should attend, but tourists just don't want to do that. It's a tube you put in your mouth right? How hard can it be? So the auto close valve that's built into these are a literal life saver.
I was looking at these on amazon - I always start with the 1 star reviews - then every one of them things have multiple 'can't breath'/hypoxia/ to uncomfortable etc … I really wanted this kind - (and only for 63-6 inches underwater) but ummm no ..and thinking will really only work for people with real good lungs (which I am NOT)
I was having the same feelings and doubts so I bought one and used it in the pool and I absolutely love it!!! I also watched RU-vid videos of other people and they said that you do have to be careful about how you breathe in it, I've never been snorkeling but I understand what they mean about the breathing. I don't doubt that traditional is better but if you're like me and just want to use it for shallow swimming then you should try it for yourself because you can always return it.
@@taraelzy1575 I hope you enjoy snorkeling! Use it and get comfortable with it and you will enjoy it very much! Try to always snorkel with a buddy, it's always safer that way. Thanks for watching!
Can you address the concern that I’ve seen with full face masks which is that carbon dioxide can build up in the large space when the snorkeler is really exerting them self, like in a strong current or a long swim. How do these masks expel The exhaled air?
I do never like the old fashion snorkel specialty for the crushing the eyes and be always having contact my mouth with the water I do test the cheap ones and are great except for the reason no deep dive but this I’m positive that solves all the issues.
If you felt that your eyes were being crushed, you were doing it wrong. The mask was too tight and / or you were trying to breathe in via your nose and sucking the mask onto your face.
No, they felt crushed when I dove deep. The mouth and nose chamber are separated from the eye chamber with one way valves, so its not possible to equalize around your eyes like you would with a traditional mask. The mask was very comfortable at the surface, just not for freediving. Thanks for watching!
He says 5 feet under water im like HOLY SHIT I 5 FEET IS ALLOT mine does not have rubber around the nose and it easy to free dive my eys dont get squished i bought it it rlly good i just swimmed In my 4 feet pool
Going to the Bahamas soon. This was super helpful! I am a beginner and am going to take your advice and stick with the classic 2 piece set. Thanks for the help!!
@@JoeOceanside actually I am a beginner, no pool available. I'm actually going to try my bath tub just to practice keeping face under water, breathing and blowing air out the tuba. What do you think of it?
@@beneiseoleinmheart5614 yeah that is a great idea. You can get comfortable with keeping your face underwater and breathing through your snorkel. You can also practice filling your mask with water and clearing it. Get comfortable with being in the water anyway you can and you will learn faster when you get out in the ocean. Be safe, and I hope you enjoy snorkeling. Thanks for watching
Yeah, it could be spiced up a little though. Camo wetsuit, black hyde vest, couple of knifes strapped to wrists and legs. Could get a good tactical Halo vibe going ;)😎
We love our full face masks. we stepped up to the tinted masks which are even better. Great seal, no water gets down the air tube, great visibility and comfortable. NOTE: THE MASK SHOULD NOT FEEL TOO TIGHT. It should be comfortable. It will suction down on your face when you go underwater
I'm wondering about a 5 and 10 year old using full face in the ocean,, the plus and minus. They will wear a vest and not go below the surface. Any thoughts or experience?
I have taught young children 4 and 6 to use traditional mask and snorkel, they can learn and they enjoy it. I would not start with a full face, but i am old school when it comes to snorkeling. Thanks for watching!
Yes, you can see me do it in the video. There is a stopper in the snorkel so not much water will come down to your face. But the pressure will squeeze the mask very tight deeper than 2 meters
Yeah, just be safe and go with a buddy. See my other video on beginner snorkeling with a full face ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RoAllDZVCXc.html
No I bought it and tried it because no one ever explained to me what is good or bad about these type of masks. In the video I recommend using a traditional mask and snorkel
I see what you mean but with normal snorkels the rubber doesn’t sit properly and it doesn’t tighten properly This would Be a lot better but I see the Roos and cons for sure
I just made a vs. video between the masks, you might like it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lLjhYMLKHM0.html You need to try several different masks and find one with a good fit. Thanks for watching!
This was helpful. I will buy one online as they aren't sold anywhere in Australia. I'm interested as I wear a splint in my mouth full time so I don't physically have the room for a normal snorkel. This would allow me to actually snorkel and the cons aren't a concern if the other option is not at all.
Steve ‘O Spaghettios sorry mate not sure I'm following why? I'm going to take a guess that it may be due to our reef bleaching or sharks? That seems to be what people focus on for Australia.
I tried the full face mask, and hated it... I kept feeling that I was suffocating,,, or kept feeling claustrophobic! and yes, I kept feeling that I was tied and thrown in the ocean!
Agreed. I tried this as a new mask for mermaiding. And I can only use these full-faced mask on the surface of the water. Feels great though but you can’t really duck dive or do underwater acrobatics unlike a traditional mask.
As a Scuba Diver i never would use one, its to Dangerous for me because of to much failure points. Its for tourists who never go underwater. "Inner Space Explorers" have done a good video why its dangerous crap......
@@JoeOceanside I'm sure I will. Hope can support as well. I like the way you get so personal with your comments, you treat everyone like family. That's really very unique of you.
You could if it has a good fit that does not push on your nose too hard. The ones that do not have the rubber nose part for equalization are even easier to nose breathe. Thanks for watching
Hello, I am Andy Wu, Dongguan Ailema Industrial Co., Ltd., China. Our company specializes in manufacturing OEM ODM swimming diving snorkeling equipment. If you are interested in consulting and cooperation, thank you.
Did this company go belly up or something? I've looked everywhere and cannot find it. I searched Google, Amazon, Ebay, etc. Can not find any. Lol and I need to buy two of them. My son and I love snorkeling and only ever dive down about 6ft. Please let me know if you know where I can find these. The alternative mask is $100. These were $69 and looked to be of way better quality. Thanks in advance.
Put a filter cartridge on top and use it for protection from virus instead of a flimsy paper mask that doesn’t even cover the eyes - they could sell them like hot cakes right now with very little engineering change (filter in top)
seems like the full face might be good for surface snorkeling. skin diving would scare me because of the difficult bailing out of the full face. with skin diving, you are frequently in a breathing deficit and anything that delays a bailout is a big negative in my opinion. given the opportunity, I would try a full face mask to see for myself.
I'm wondering he says the beginner should not use this full face mask. Can someone give reasons? I'm or will go for my very time snorkeling. I'm thinking to use this full face mask for comfortable. I believe I won't dive more than 5 feet at my very first time 😅😊
is the fog coming from breathing only?....you can have a fogged up regular swimming googles.....i think the fog is also coming from the skin pores of the face
When I use the full face snorkel it never fogs, that was one of features I love about the mask. When you inhale the dry air comes in across the eye section and keeps the glass clear of fog, when you exhale the humid air it goes out a different direction away from the glass. No fog, very good design.
Tbh, wasn’t really convined that its bad. Only the eye pressure but as take snorkel for vacation/small recreation not hobby gradded. Sounds liek a great mask
Cheap copies, not made by a reputable water sport company lack baffles in the snorkel section, this leads to a large dead air space, you are effectively rebreathing your own air, very dangerous as it can lead to drowsiness and unconsciousness. More likely to flood also as the mask has a greater area to seal, more potential failure points. The cheap copies also do not use silicon on the skirt, making an ineffective seal. I would advise anyone to stick with the traditional mask/snorkel, but if they absolutely have to get one, spend a little more money and buy a reputable brand name 👍
Yes these are really only made for you to stay on the surface. If you want to go deeper you could use a tradtional mask and snorkel and learn to freedive down lower while holding your breath. Or you could take a class and learn scuba to go really deep. Thanks for watching
i ordered one and it was advertised for up to 9m of diving depth. gotta learn to hold my breath that long but i thing the face pressure issue is a pretty valid point but i gotta find out. it arrives in 2 days
This thing kills people. Novice uses it thinging its easy, in fact you cannot recover when you get in trouble. Plus novice think it can replace proper lessons.
He missed two very big points. #1 With the large area it is harder to find this type of mask that seals as good as a standard dive mask. #2 Less expensive versions of this type of mask can recycle co2 back into the breathable air chamber. This could be very dangerous.
I'm going to discovery cove later this year (hopefully) and last time I went I did not get on with the two piece. The water kept going inside my face mask and getting my lashes wet. I ended up actually snorkelling for about ten minutes. I'm hoping to get a full face mask and will not be diving down and just staying on the surface. Are there any tips on using it for the sole purpose of swimming on the surface?
Make sure you have a good fit, tight enough so it seals, but not so tight it is uncomfortable. Breath at a normal consistent pace (not too fast), but breath a little deeper than normal so you flush out all old air from the mouth chamber with every breath. Keep your face down and enjoy the scenery below the water, many beginners make the mistake of trying to keep lifting their head out of water and looking above the surface. This will put you in the wrong posture, fatigue your neck and be uncomfortable. Just lay out, face down, relaxed. Also, if the water will be cold I would wear a shorty wetsuit, being chilled could ruin an otherwise great experience. Have fun, stay safe, and thanks for watching!
Thanks for the informative video on snorkling safety. You cover all points very well. I personaly haven't been ocean snorkling yet. But i will practice before going.
I have one of these but over time the one way vales harden up and when you try to take a breath and mid way you cant you just get a huge panic attack what I do is push the top bit and I can breath
Go for the re newed full face snorkels because the old ones can kill you. Edit: i got one and i wanted to see if it was good going to a lake next week.
I make sure I have a mask with x2 sets of one way valves. That way you know the air can only flow one direction and it is always fresh. See my other video on using these masks safely. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RoAllDZVCXc.html
Divers Direct, Divers Supply, and Amazon. I buy and try gear and return it on Amazon. Its usually better to go into a dive shop cause you'll want to make sure the mask fits your face well before you buy it. Enjoy your trip! Thanks for watching!
... false sense of security - really? must be good then eh? Looks goofy - yeah fish really know about that. Its for snorkelling, that's what they tell you its for, not deeper diving. Ninja shark from Sydney do this mask in 2 types, for kids and biggies too...
Joe Oceanside howdy Joe. Yeah I’ve got a Ninja Shark full face with facility to equalise by pressing your nose (no hard plastic covering in that area).
Joe, I've never snorkeled before but I live right beside the beach. I was going to buy one of the new fangled snorkels and your video was the first one to pop up. So Now that I know that I need to go old school, do you have a mask and snorkel you recommend for a beginner? Scardiecat newbs?
Yeah I would recommend any of the major brands, Cressi, Mares, Tusa, Scuba pro, atomic, aqualung. Really they all should be fine but the most important thing is the fit. It needs to make good contact on your face with no pressure points and be comfortable. I would go to a dive shop if you can find one and they will let you try them on. Or buy and return a few on Amzon
I bought this mask but in early 2020, unfortunately covid prevented travel etc. so I haven’t used it yet, except it worked in the tub (no swimming pool). The reason i bought it as a recreational snorkeling mask for the amazing visibility and i could do little shallow diving with it. I like that it has a seal between the eyes and nose/mouth areas. Testing at home, i left the snorkel detached from the mask so i could block the air inlet with my hand. Mask on and hand over inlet, no air (water) entered the mask showed a good seal. When i tested taking air with my nose, the air entered the snorkle, then exhaling with my mouth, the used air exited the mouth purge hole. Nice, seems to work well
Yeah they are really only made for surface snorkeling. You get face squeeze quick because the one way air valves prevent you from equalizing pressure around the eyes. Thanks for watching
I can see where some people will like it, but for me it’s not an option. Getting prescription lenses would be difficult if not impossible. Also, I would still need a regular mask for diving.
Bill Evans thanks. I do have a prescription mask complete with bifocals. My mask and my dive computer are two items I always pack in my carry on luggage. I didn’t know you could get a prescription for a full face mask.
My dad had a similar full face mask but when free diving it cracked for some reason, I don't think it was pressure because he was only at 13 feet and he said he felt lightheaded so I wouldn't use one
Yeah these masks have a large surface area, so the deeper you go and the more psi (pounds per square inch) will be exerted against the lens and it could definitely crack
Cool, yeah my point was not that it is hard to take off but that is not quite as easy as spitting out a tradtional snorkel from your mouth. Hope you are enjoying your mask. Thanks for watching
I just use a conventional one. Not cause of a better or worse dynamic, but because I've been snorkeling since I was 6 and have no problem getting water near my face.
It sounds interesting, and I like to draw attention to their specs, such as "Never ascend to the water’s surface faster than the bubbles released from exhaling." Professionals can handle such phenomena as the pressure difference, but I am afraid that an amateur can use it without safety, which can cause some serious problems. I will advise strongly to read the safety instructions...personally, I am not a pro at diving, but I know some physics ;) For example, we should all know the difference between taking a single breath at atmospheric pressure (when you do a free dive) and using diving equipment where instructions such as the above with the doubles are super important! Enjoy ;)
Great points made, found all the same pros with this mask when I was snorkelling in the lake, shallow dives and surface swimming. Comfortable and feeling separated was the kicker for me, I felt that instantly when I tried this mask.
@@JoeOceanside You are absolutley right. I went ahead and bought a better full mask around 120 canadian, spent the last 4 days snorkeling all day long and as soon as you dip down or look straight down the snorkel intake ball doesnt close up and it takes on water. It is a love hate relationship with these because they are so relaxing but when you want to go underwater its brutal.
I liked your review, but I'm still not sure which to get, I haven't snorkeled in years (15+) and I'm about to take a trip to Hawaii so wanted to get something and was thinking of this, but now I'm unsure. Has anyone used one of these with facial hair ?? I have a goatee and I'm concerned about having a good seal to keep the water out. I appreciate any thoughts from anyone who has tried these things out....Thanks
Hi thanks for watching, I mostly dive around fort Lauderdale and Key Largo, so I'm not too familiar with Miami. Fowey rocks lighthouse was a good spot near miami, it's a few miles offshore. John Pennekamp in Key Largo probably has the easiest snorkeling and it's not too far of a drive from Miami. They have a lot of charter boats if you do not have your own boat.
I'm getting one, because I think they look cool. And I'm getting one for the kid, because she hates water splashed on her face. So we can play above water, without her being uncomfortable. No diving planned.
