they don't need shoes like humans don't need shoes. But with shoes they can walk on floors that are more aggressive to the foot without hurting themselves. Wild horse have a tone of injuries and having this prevents some.
I'm guessing its kinda like growing into a new size of shoes for humans. The old one would be flawed or uncomfortable in guessing. So they make new ones to better fit the horse and so they aren't uncomfortable! 😁
