100% more of these please! Really useful as I said in my other comment. Would love to see a minor ii-V-I and possibly Rhythm Changes and maybe a Jazz-Blues? I would also love to see Comping Workouts once you've done some more single line ones - examples of how you can comp through tunes. As well as maybe Tune Workouts - example solos or lines through common tunes? Can I get a bit of clarification on how you'd view a #4 dim chord in a blues? If we're in F, that would be a Bdim. Would you think F minor in that scenario? I did also have another video idea, but I'm not sure how feasible it would be. Bruce Foreman did a podcase episode on the Top 10 Mother tunes on the Guitarwank podcase where he went through 10 tunes with his reasons. These reasons were really useful - things like Summertime (importance of melody); Honeysuckle Rose (Study of ii-V); Take the A Train (Dom II chord); All the Things you Are (Study of Cycle of 5ths Progression); Just Friends (Starts on the IV Chord). I wonder if you could provide a list of "20 Jazz Tunes everyone should have in their repertoire" - but give a musical explanation for WHY that tunes is not only important, but also the 'key features' it has that is useful in other tunes (and you could list some of the tunes that people could then play having learned it). I appreciate that's a huge amount of work (in addition to the Big Workout videos you're doing), but I think it would be a successful video (and probably one that a lot of people search for on a regular basis. Also - Chase's Polo game is always on point! haha
Thanks for the awesome feedback and suggestions, Jamie! Definitely more of these Workout videos coming if people keep watching them 👍 The #4 Dim. in a blues is almost always treated like the minor pentatonic of the key you're in. So F minor (focus on F, Ab, Bb) on Bdim.7 of an F Blues. You'll hear great soloists continue their bluesy ideas over Bdim.7 instead of jumping into diminished patterns. I resonate with that idea you mentioned from Bruce and have thought of my own version of that for a while, so this is another one I could do something with 👌 And I get a lot of my polos from Express, very nice to have for the hot Miami weather 😎
Hey Enrico! I'm referencing the Jazz Master Session we did in CGA with Barry Greene all on diminished, and then the PDF (like all PDFs I make) for this is also included for CGA members.
Thanks for the question! There are at least 2 reasons I don't think that's a better way to think about it, but as always do what makes sense in your mind. The first reason is that the notes you would think for D half diminished (D, F, Ab, and C) aren't nearly as easy to create a melody with as the first 4 notes of F minor that I'm suggesting (F, G, Ab, Bb). The second reason is that there are other concepts I think of using this framework that are beyond the scope of this video, such as using minor pentatonics that are minor 3rds away.
