Bill Simmons has been out of ESPN for two years, but couldn’t help himself when asked what advice he has for his former employer.
In an interview at our Code Conference, Simmons said ESPN’s current problems can be traced to a leadership vacuum that emerged after the company’s business chief, George Bodenheimer, left at the end of 2011.
While former content chief John Skipper took over for Bodenheimer in title, the business side has in reality been run by a committee, Simmons claimed.
“When you lose your closer and a team says we have all these set-up guys ... it never works and I think that’s what they did,” he said, using a baseball analogy to make his point.
Simmons also said ESPN should have had a presence in Silicon Valley. “The other mistake they made, they had to realize they were a technology company.”

In the thumbnail Bill looks likes look likes he's been on the run, living off the grid and evading ESPN agents taking them down similar to Jason Bourne's story.

Bill is at his best when he is unfiltered and uncensored. The moment he becomes overproduced by someone behind the camera then he loses his charm. This was one of his best interviews along with his TODAY interview with Willie Geist. It's a shame his HBO show was cancelled. I thought it was starting to hit its stride. Obviously it wasn't for everyone. I think one of his mistakes was making that show with HBO. It limited his audience. If he joins up with Fox, maybe he could have a weekly show on FS1 using a similar format.

omieg89 Agreed. I think he lost many of his more conservative audience/fans with the HBO show. I really enjoyed it. His guests seemed to be a bit more open and unfiltered because they were on HBO.

omieg89 I agree but he wouldn't be uncensored, like you said, if he were to go FS1

I wish Bill would have done a sports version of Last Week Tonight. Obviously, Oliver is a one-of-a-kind talent, but a great quick funny abbreviated weekly recap of a few sports highlights with a spin + in-depth report + 1 interview.

Yeah when I saw his HBO show, it targeted a certain demographic. No sports fan is going to want to hear about Malcolm Gladwell talking about HGH, let's be real now except a very small demographic

This guy is actually a genius for the kind of innovative stuff he’s created weather it’s been 30 for 30 or Grantland both of which were and still are astronomically successful for his then employers ESPN, they screw him over and he leaves, he has a TV show that wasn’t even that bad but didn’t work out and then went and created The Ringer which was purchased by Spotify for over $100m 2 years ago with The Bill Simmons podcast as their flagship podcast along with all the other great Ringer podcasts. Not to mention he was a fantastic sports writer and columnist who wrote ‘The Book of Basketball’ and literally knows everything about the game. Like I said, a genius.

ESPN should have separated its licensed content (NFL, baseball) from its in-house content. Create two separate legal entities like Google/Alphabet.
