ACT leader David Seymour sits down for a korero with Moana Maniapoto to discuss his bottom line Referendum on Te Tiriti, working with Winston Peters and the place of Māori in Aotearoa.
I am also Maori and I don't quite know what you mean? All Maori I know personally are contributing members of society. What do you think we should be accountable for?
How is this lady more "oppressed" than me? She looks like she's doing well for herself, yet implies her people are somehow incapable of living without special rights and privileges granted by the Government. A lot of people doing it tough out there -from all races and backgrounds.
The only thing holding Maori back is their attitude. (There are plenty of hard working , successful Maori though). For people like Moana , Willy, Tamahere, Waititi, and all their fellow conspirators, its about money, land and power..
Being a victim is disempowering. Being a victim of colonisation is eternally disempowering. Always looking backwards and banging into walls. It takes courage to change the narrative. David has what it takes to improve people's future.
Hell, this dragon annoys me, she doesn’t get it, Maori are not the fucken indigenous people of this country. Eating the indigenous population does not make you indigenous.
@@stephenc8956 your comment, its about money, land and power.., that sounds exactly what I was taught in 1970's regarding colonialism globally ... whether in Africa, Asia, Americas, Pacific, sounds a common theme really, wouldn't you agree?
@@manuhamoai dont agree. I mean if you said, maori were killing, raping, be-heading each other, taking each others land and selling each othrr as slaves decades before captian cooks arrival. I would say thats correct and is just another form of what you just mentioned so maori should be used to it.
everything moana talks about seems very surface level, and the moment david explains his side or asks for an example and tries to go deeper she moves onto the next topic
Because she doesnt actually know and hasnt researched her point of view. Its the same victim mentality and being outraged with the view that thats all you need and sadly for too long it was all you needed. But lets move along and get resolution....no no say people like Moana its more complex!.....its not that complex really if you are solution focused!
I wonder! does Moana never smile .Right from the begining of interview ,she asks questions but does not listen to the answer. Woke through and though. I,ll never listen to any more of her interviews again .worst kind of Journalism .
I am Maori. But the truth is, the rest of my whanau smoke, drink, eat rubbish, and to be honest are just plain lazy. It frustrates me. And we wonder why our people don't live as long? We have problems with child abuse and we make excuses qll the time. Im sick of blaming colonization. We as Maori need to give ourselves a kick up the arse and stop blaming the Treaty and everyone else.
Kia ora mate. Im a 62 yr old cis white male. Apparently I'm responsible for rape and female violence. But if I said what you did I'd be a colonial racist white supremacist . But I agree with you.
Well said. Lifestyle choices play an important role in poverty and health. Society wants to blame govts or policies for failing people, but alot of the time it's the people who fail themselves. If you gave everyone the same start, would they make the same choices? NZ has flourished, people live longer. The opportunies are there. Self responsibility and incentivising yourself is the best way to take yourself out of victimhood.
Yes, I don't understand, look at other colonized people around the world who have had their lands (economic base) taken/confiscated - they are all going from strength to strength right?
@@user-ot8ex7eo2p every modern country is colonized. But maybe the one that stands out that has gone back to reversing it is South Africa, and that's gone backwards.

Nah you wont override our culture with your white racist agender we are not all kiwi we are Maori always have been and always will be your not and have no right to pigeon hole us into your bullshit
Why are you watching this interview then? There are many far right interviewers you could watch who would only ask the questions you want to hear answers to.
Are you inferring Seymour is a wimp and can’t handle himself against an assertive woman. I think indirectly you’re putting Seymour down and saying he is not manly.
yeah 100% the racist are the systemically, and culturally disempowered who fight to get equal outcomes in health, justice and a seat at the table. they should get the same input as everyone else its 2023 for christ sake!
How does this woman hold a job as a interviewer . She is TOTALLY bias . Running a shock jock line , with little to no intention to put a fair line forward . Being a close relative of willie jackson it doesn't come as a suprise .
I'm not sure if she's necessarily racist but maybe she's more ignorant that Many Maori are well off & Many Non Maori (Whites, Pacific Islanders, Asians etc.) have struggles or live in poverty
Such a negative interviewer in both interviews I've seen.. why be so aggressive and always blaming everyone else for poor Maori statistics instead of looking within. We've certainly given Maori plenty of $$ and roles in government, boards etc so no excuses.
But in this way we get to see and hear both sides. She's doing the job of a journalist, to ask questions and put David on the hot seat. We need more like her and I think she does a good job.
He doesn't understand. He's someone coming from white privilege his whole life who can't or won't acknowledge the past atrocities committed against Maori.
People like Moana are really confused about the meaning of indigenous. Winston has already given her a history lesson, but she’s still clinging on. There’s no reason why the rest of NZers should have to suffer and compensate just because Maori make bad choices and end up with a bad life.
100% Agreed!!! maori people are NOT INDIGENOUS TO NEW ZEALAND!!! Aboriginal people and Native American Indian people are Indigenous to these country, as they have lived thousands of years in these areas of land.
@@pauldansby8285 yeah lets argue weather Maori are indigenous or not! but lets ignore everything colonizers did to them to have them where they are today..cringe
How does giving a group a chance to control water issues get that group out of prison , into hospital , or educated. These are accepted issues for a lot of groups in NZ , not just one. Conflating is exactly what Moana is doing . All people are important and deserve equal help.
David Seymour has the most advanced vision for the future of this country. The way I see it without a change of government and that being a National/ACT coalition we will not progress as country and the mass exodus of talented young minds will continue to look to Australia and other developed countries that offer a better quality of life.
I am in my 60’s with four children in their 20’s and 30’s! Two of them have medical degrees, one is a Master of Laws and one nearing the end of her PhD! According to the two that I had dinner with the other night, the only thing that would prompt them to leave NZ would be if David Seymour (with his terrible retrograde policies) gets into a coalition Government!!
@@brianmitchell1624 and can you tell me is the situation we are in at the moment worthy of staying in New Zealand? Aggravated burglaries by youth offenders has become the daily norm, cost of living is out of control. We earn about 30-40% less than Australians in most industries. We need a government that takes this country seriously and has the decency to do their best for this country. The New Zealand I want is a first world country where people feel safe and have a high quality standard of living as good as the best countries in the world. A world leading country and not a second rate country which we are becoming!
sorry moana, but the treaty has been part of the curriculum for years, my oldest is 32 and he had to do education on it when he was in primary and intermediate, my youngest is 25 and that curriculum changed in guidelines in that short of time, which is detrimental to the full true history behind the treaty, it is meant to make one peoples and one nation, not a segregated society, there are those among us who what to change history to their own end, so much so they are even leaving the majority of their own culture behind, to just line their own pockets, how sad is that, !
Call me judgy but is it just me who thinks NZ is going crazy at the moment? What I really don’t understand is how Māori try to blame Pakeha and the treaty for their poor performance and at the same time - are so entitled to their rights to partnership and all the benefits the modern world has brought to the country. Yes, we have our rights and we are entitled to our rights but we also have to fulfil our obligations to society as well - as in obligations to work hard and live your life well so that you are responsible for your own success and happiness and accountable for your own action. Not all under-privileged groups of society are gang affiliated or under-performing like Māori. Instead of pointing the finger at others and the system, maybe have the conscience to self-reflect and raise awareness amongst your own group as to why things are going wrong for the group - e.g. 15% of NZers are Māori = 55% of prisoners are Māori (please don’t say the justice system is tougher on Māori - that is not a FACT but an accusation! how about the undeniable FACT that there simply are more Maori people committing serious crimes than all other ethnicities put together in NZ) - live your life well and be an example of hard work and integrity to your children so you can put a stop to breeding a culture of anti-social and criminal ways of living. How about the fact that over 90% of pediatric dental treatments done in NZ public hospitals are done for Māori kids - it’s not a reflection of system failure - but poor or rather, lack of parenting - and it is not a poverty issue or poor decision making from limited resources - it has nothing to do with your race or ethnicity - it’s the decision you as parents make to purchase fizzy drinks and feed them to your children when other people choose not to and please don’t play “the system fails to deliver the right health info to Māori” card - you’d have to be pretty stupid to not know the soft drinks and the sweets are bad for you. It is not “unequitable provision of healthcare” but rather lack of self-control and accountability for taking care of own health that are driving the health stats for Māori. If you REALLY want to turn things around for Māori - put a stop to the culture of dependence and move forward with responsibility and passion for life.
The best thing we can do is treat each other equal and with respect no matter what life situation someone is in. I'm Maori we were bought up racist against white people but to hate on another race isnt the answer. I love our country and that we have so many ethnicities all in one big melting pot. Wether your homeless a billionaire a prisoner an old person a young person I still greet everyone the same with eye contact respect they deserve and no judgement
@@ShirleyZhang-bt4dj the best thing we can do is treat everyone with respect. Do I think the Maori have been wronged in the past yes. Do I think anyone should abuse the welfare system no. Moana is hilarious. She criticises ACT for taking things out of context and yet that’s exactly what she does, and it’s her who REINTERPRETED the Treaty.
"Indigenous" is a load of BS. All you can say is that humans are "indigenous" to Earth. Forget about saying someone should have more rights than someone else because some ancestor arrived somewhere before that of the other person. You shouldn't call others stupid but that is stupid.
@@naisyjohnshaha she is not a journalist. I have no idea who she is but she is a terrible at interviews. Its blatantly clear she has an agenda from the outset. It's happening right now, the left are about to be slaughtered in the next election. David handled it like a champ did well not to walk out she was so rude.
Born and raised in New Zealand and I love my country. Though, going on 35 now, and I've never until recently (the last few years specifically) felt so alien in my own country. I'm not Maori, but I love and respect the culture we share. If I was Maori, I would imagine that I would feel quite disempowered by the direction of the country. I understand that there are complex, generational issues at play but you don't lift a culture/people up by constantly trying to remind/convince them that they are disadvantaged.
Who do you think promotes this mentality & Maori exceptionalism? Who created the crown institutions that have damaged indigenous folks for generations? Seymour is hard right. The idea that Seymour , Peter’s & Luxon are dangerous for Maori, the Treaty, & the non wealthy. These are terrifying times. Your attitude denotes both institutional racism & a position of privilege.
I am a 6th generation New Zealander of mostly Scottish and English descent. I can NOT understand why a person who was BORN and RAISED here, can't even spell the word Maori!!!! This is a shocking eye opener discovering that a Kiwi has gone right through our school system and can spell every English word they write in a comment, but incorrectly spells the only word in te reo that they use. What an indichtment on you, your family, and our Pakeha school system!! To make matters worse, it is the word referring to te tangata whenua, a word that is written very visibly all over NZ. It is also very very revealing to me, that you think that everyone is a New Zealander first and foremost. That idea can only be responded to by individuals themselves- whether or not they identify first with being a New Zealander! To me, your lack of respect for our indigenous people oozes out of everything you write, and for me it is offensive. I am looking forward to the number of racists in this country gradually diminishing And hopefully, newcomers to New Zealand, such as your family members, can also pass on to their children and grandchildren an understanding of humility and respect. That is more respectful than raising their own position in Aotearoa to some kind of equal position based on whether or not they have become a citizen here. That is entirely dependent on a Pakeha construction of identity ...based on a legal definition only. That viewpoint tramples all over a People's connection to the land, water, birds, plants, fauna and every aspect of native wildlife. That view tramples over the ancestors who skilfully navigated the oceans to reach this place that once was paradise. The viewpoint entirely overlooks the rich spiritual ways of the original kaitiaki. They were people of the land, not people among the people. They were not ignorant of the land and our dependence on that and clean water. I hope your children go through the school system and respectfully learn a lot more about the Maori people, their views, these unique islands and these precious rivers & ocean. You and I both have ancestral lands we know of and can return to. The difference between us "all" is that you, me, Pacific people, Indians, Chinese, Scottish, English, South African, and all other immigrants of the last 250 years have ANOTHER ancestral place to put our feet. We can all catch a plane and go back to those places. Please show more respect and humility, knowing that your family also, recently arrived here. We have just had Maori Language Week. Before that, we celebrated teaching our kids at Kohanga for 40 years. Have you noticed any news from any iwi, or about kiwi being killed by intoduced animals in NZ? Did you understand the significance of celebrating stars and deep connections on our last public holiday? Do you understand what has lead to the need for health reforms in NZ, and specifically the Maori Health Authority? I think this focus on understanding and respect will help sharpen any argument you present in the future.
5:58 I am going with the "experts"... or you could try engaging your brain. There are different views, the fact you can't acknowledge Act's as having merit exposes your bias. It should concern everyone that people like her think preferential treatment or different services being provided according to ethnicity is ok
Any form of racial based political or resource participation just needs to he stopped. Completely. What happened 200 years ago, in the context of the British empire, should not be the thing we all die in a ditch over now. Until we become a truly equal country with maori told They are the same as everyone else, we will always have racial division. People like Moana will never give up that privilege, they will fight to keep thier unequal and undemocratic rights, because they personally would then just be a normal citizen... just like everyone else. Time to become a republic and put this chapter behind us. One nation, one people
W Peters draws on the the writing of a person who has links to past century. The MP for Epsom seems to ignore this. Have a look at "Looking Back"what Sir G Palmer talk about the time when they changed law to date claims to 1840.
if only you had a bunch of words from people on paper to read about this information or better yet really fast and obviously accessible database that you could do research about these issues on.
i think if he could deal with some historical inequalities within these values like "common humanity" then that would make more sense. He seems to want to move straight into an equal approach that is not and has not worked
Its time to finalise the exact meaning of the treaty once and for all. Time to end the constant grievance revisionist gravey train. It's funny how Moana conveniently leaves out that the treaty was revised by an activist treaty claimant in the late 1980's. The citizens of this country deserve stability and to be free from Maori racism.
These NZ interviewer's need to learn how to interview and let the other actually speak. Take a look at how Joe Rogan, Jordan Peterson, Tucker Carlson to name just a few. This isn't even worth watching after 1 minute.
David seems to be the only politician with enough balls to speak the truth. Hes not talking down Maori culture, its obviously a key part of our identity being kiwis. This racially chaged crap has to end.
Once again, an interviewer who clearly fails to understand the difference between causality and correlation and therefore, like the rest of them, fails in her interpretation of the data.
@@akab750 yeah I'm in let's sell it to iwi and remove Māori TV from government funding so we can create one plus plus cause I gotta get fear mongered for 3 hours in a row before I go to sleep 😴

I think it's great that you invited David back after a year and had a frank and open discussion vith David and appreciated how you let him talk, unlike the Debate on 3 the other day. That was a S$%t show. I understand that you want to discuss all the things you might not agree on. But i would appreciate if you also discuss things you agree with him on. Or if he makes a good point you agree with him. There is no harm in backing down some times.
Maori came from Taiwan, the Cook Islands, and other pacific islands. When current iwi arrived in NZ there were people already here, oral histories from many different tribes document this. Given that, is it accurate for Maori to claim to be indigenous?
"Indigenous" is a useless term. The only meaningful thing you can say is that humans are indigenous to Earth, but rarely visit the poles. Definitely not that someone today has more rights than someone else simply because some ancestors arrived somewhere before an ancestor of the other. The whole "indigenous" argument is BS.
@barneyboy2008 Actually, the Treaty was written to create one people. Do you honestly think the British would create a situation where Maori (who didn't even work metal, forget about their preferred dishes, when they arrived) would become British citizen BUT also be first class citizens in NZ with their own British citizens relegated to second class? Come now. And the Maori didn't have to cede sovereignty? Oh really? Now, there are all these "interpretations" and "principles" invented, mainly by part Maori who are rubbing their hands. Nonsense. If Te Tiriti is now suddenly a justification for seperatism and Apartheid and robbing from taxpayers, then someone should use it to roll a fag with. Better use of the paper. The Maori came asking for the Treaty to save them, not only from the French, but mainly from other Maori. They were constantly on murderous revenge raids. And why so many signatures? Because they weren't one people. Near 200 years later and now Part-Maori suddenly were supposedly meant to have their own country within the country. BS
Moana , honestly lacks the comprehension for this debate , to not understand that if you suck on cigarettes or overeat and don't exercise , you're going to be unhealthy and that is regardless of your ethnicity , and that the resulting health complications are not the health system persecuting you is simply lack of understanding on her part. David touche' Sir
A liberal democracy, one person one vote, is the best option for a fair NZ, say no to twin governance. At least three of the 75 NZ iwi are billionaires, but how much equal redistributing of their wealth to the poorest iwi do they undertake? A liberal democracy promises a fairer nation than tribal hierarchies. I want to live in an NZ with equal opportunities, social mobility and a safety net based on need not race.
The more this interviewer interviews the more obvious it is that she’s just a singer. Shame her song is always the same. It’s your pakeha’s fault. Grow up Moana ( pronounced moaner)
he tends to forget European colonization played a role in the establishment of social and cultural institutions in New Zealand, including schools, churches, and civic organizations. It's important to emphasize that these positive effects for the European population occurred alongside significant negative consequences for the indigenous Māori population, such as land confiscation, loss of resources, and cultural disruption. The colonization process also involved conflicts and tensions between the European settlers and Māori. Furthermore, as New Zealand has evolved over time, the negative aspects of colonization, including dispossession and injustice, have been acknowledged and addressed through processes like Treaty settlements and reconciliation efforts. In contemporary New Zealand, there is a growing emphasis on recognizing and honoring the Treaty of Waitangi and its principles of partnership, protection, and participation. dont forget this David
"Honouring te tiriti" means respecting the original intent of the agreement. This was explicitly defined as the Crown having paramount authority over all lands, Maori hapu and individuals retaining land ownership and management rights subject to Crown governance, and Maori and Pakeha alike having the same civil rights. It established a parity or parternship between Maori and Pakeha subjects UNDER the Crown. The idea of a crown Maori parity partnership at abstract governance level is a modern fiction and is NOT in the original Treaty. Indeed any practice that elevates one group of subjects over another is a BREACH of the Treaty. Kawanatanga in clause 1 is the abstract power of governance- making and enforcing one law, legislative executive and judicial over all hapu territories- the universal sovereignty that applies throughout NZ. Tino Rangatiratanga as expressed in the second clause of the Treaty is explicitly linked to land ownership- "te tino rangatiratanga O O RATOU WHENUA"- it is a right limited to the management and ownership of the territory of each hapu. Colonisation was intended to proceed by land purchase, with land sold to the Queen coming under her ownership. The third clause established equality at subject level between all of the Crown's sovereign subjects. In the modern state of NZ the Crown consists of the ruling authority democratically elected by universal franchise, one person one vote irrespective of ethnicity, fully in keeping with the Treaty principle of parity. as subjects/citizens. The Maori seats provide a unique focus for the Maori vote to be effectively concentrated in several seats, but it is still one person one vote. Cogovernance is not. By granting one subset of electors special privileges and rights at goverrnment level not available to other subsets, it is a breach of universal representation, a breach of democracy, and a breach of the third Clause of the Treaty. To Honour the Treaty we have to set aside this idea of cogovernance. Past wrongs still need to be put right, and Maori culture and wellbeing and self determination fostered as an essential part of who we are as a nation, but this has to happen under the universal umbrella of a united democracy. Promoting equity by creating ethnic disparity is divisive; it is a fundamental breach of democratic principle, and more importantly, a fundamental breach of the Treaty of Waitangi. Honour the Treaty.
This land is not a republic; There are those who have tried and still are trying to make that happen; the re-flagging and the re-naming of places are all part of a ‘one person one vote’ Hobsons Choice ideology; demo-crazy is a dead end;
I agree with David 100%. We need a combined vision for the future of all New Zealanders - Māori & Non-Māori. One country - one people. Looking to see everyone succeed and lifting up people who are struggling based on need not race. We need to stop looking in the rear view mirror and look to the future. Every person needs to embrace a sense of personal responsibility. We will never be able to move forward and heal from the wrongs of the past on both sides, by implementing any form of divisive policies on racial grounds no matter how well intentioned they may be.
As a professional data scientist I can confirm correlation is not causation. It's highly inappropriate and incorrect to interpret correlation as causation for any kind of data. Correlations are used to build generalised models. Using a generalised model to say anything about one individual would be stereotyping. When the stereotype is by race and if that affects any behaviour or decisions - we call that racial prejudice, or racism.
Actually, all they need do is get off their chuffs and work just like her and David and a whole bunch of successful Maori in society. She clearly never asks herself why she has done ok, and while others of her ilk haven't? Could it be something to do with family life, personal responsibility and a strong work ethic etc? She is typical of her kind, doing quite nicely personally, but always claiming collective victimhood and seeking a free ride at others expense.
The treaty being redefined comment after x years is pretty funny given the modern 'principles' bs only kicked in over the last 20-30 years. Great work by seymour here
Lets learn before the treaty as well, Maori enslaved each other, raped, murdered tortured each other and were even cannibals. 30 years of age was their life expectancy.. but lets all act like it was all utopia.
My son is a Maori, I'm a NZer, why should we have two different governments one for my son and one for me? And how is it fair that consultants were getting 1 million a month for maori health when Dunedin hospital is struggling to be built, with less beds and bigger population 🤔
Moana was so unprofessional who view non-maori as aliens from another planet and with no rights.. the debate was sooo unhealthy and I can not bear watching.. its so sad.. 😢 we need a referendum once and for all as a matter of a priority to save our democracy. Well done Dave for standing up to all kiwis!
It's funny how she has interviewed Winston and David slammed them about how there trying to make everything about race yet both her interviews have been about her pushing the exact thing that maori's need special treatment and why do they not agree with her. 😂😂😂 she is the problem with this country.
I like and admire Moana, and am not an Act voter, but a couple of comments: I do think we need to cut back government departments. As a woman, and trained in feminist studies at university, I can not justify the expense of the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, and do not think the average woman would even notice that they are there, or if they weren’t. Regarding Winston, I smiled at David’s clear antipathy against him. I do think of things NZ First has brought in, from the Gold Card through to regional development schemes. If Kiwis vote his party in, maybe David will have to overcome his clear dislike, respect the democratic process, and work with him!
Yeah, and for someone like yourself (forgive me), to say that I'm thinking NZ1st is going to nail it this election. On another note, Moana has shown herself to be a very able interviewer.
You seem clear-minded, positive, and willing to think thru the challenges facing our country. I have four kids between 17 & 23. Two are living overseas (US & Aus) and two studying. I find myself encouraging them to leave NZ because as a country we seem to be heading backwards, and we seem so divided down so many issues. I'd be interested in your view of out nation's future and what we can do to optimise it.
I don't agree with Seymour much, but the one thing he does get right is solving the causes of the health issues, not just saying that because someone is of a certain ethnicity they are simply just going to have worse health. It is the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff. The problem is that David would want healthcare to be private, no public hospitals, just charity/religious hospitals and business.
Saying Maori are disadvantaged because of their race is by definition racist. So she's just blindly believing racist "experts", making her also a racist.
Prison does not work it just cost the taxpayers more money . We gave Winston an idea that will save taxpayers 20% of their taxes per person. We also gave Winston an idea like putting methane tanks on farms to save kiwis 30%-40% of their fuel bill each week . We also have a 3rd idea that’s going to drop the food bill by 1/4 . Vote Winston and see what happens. We will work with Winston to give a 20% tax break a 30%-40% fuel drop for all kiwis not just the rich and drop the price of food by 1/4 . Vote Winston and see how much better of you are .
The pure irony. The reinterpretation of the Treaty has been done by There is no evidence that Maori health outcomes are based on the treaty or racism. Experts? Ideologies. Activist Academics. It’s astonishing that she can be so openly racist. How is she even employed to do this? Marginalised people? People who have marginalised themselves. Whose responsibility is that?
