Here we are 9 years later and everything he said about Trudeau's Liberals is spot on. Permanent deficit, uncontrolled spending, budget still not balancing itself lol and taxes, taxes, taxes.
What Harper is talking about with unexpected downturns is coming true. Q4 2018 had only 0.1% growth. At the same time we are being faced with no growth, our deficit has stayed at $20B. Even when the economy was doing well under Trudeau, they spent even more. Tax revenues were increasing and so the Liberals decided the public was ok with $20B deficits and increased spending. This is what his father did when he was in power, especially after his incumbent election almost lost him his job. He basically said, “F*** it, let’s just spend as much as we can.” The only Liberal government in modern times to make tough Diana coal choices was Chrétien. He was super corrupt but overall got spending in line. But, this was not the case when he was first elected PM. He and Paul Martin were called to New York because the bond rating agencies were deeply concerned with their approach to more spending and less taxes. So they kept taxes somewhat even but dumped services to the provinces which also couldn’t raise taxes so everything suffered. Not to say the bond agencies were evil or wrong, they were telling the truth that future borrowing was more risky and had to have a higher interest rating.

It is not us Canadians that are oppressing muslim women, but Islam itself, by being forced to wear those silly garbage bags in public. This is to be abhorred in any sphere and not merely respected or even tolerated as _just part of their religion or culture._ If they're entitled to their culture, we are entitled to ours. The recipient of favours should yield to some of her host country's fairly reasonable requests. This isn't asking for much. And it surely isn't "telling people how to live" - which is a dishonest exaggeration.
2024, reading comments from 8 years ago bashing Harper… how is Trudeau doing now? Trudeau is the reason why we should not vote with the heart and emotions choosing a drama teacher over an economist. Look where we are now.
Harper said it, we will inevitably be hit by surprises and COVID came and Canada’s yearly interest payments on debt currently equals the total GST revenues.
***** It's not the equivalent of a ski mask. Ski masks have no cultural significance. If you had some compelling reason why you had to wear your ski mask in public, I would defend your right to do so. Further, their identities were confirmed before the ceremony. Everyone present knew who they were, so they weren't "concealing their identities." Lastly, they were Canadian citizens when they signed the paperwork. The ceremony is only a formality.
***** That is _exactly what we have now._ These women were identified when they came in, and once their identity had been established, the put their veils back on.
Somebody needs to tell Mr. Harper that the "vast majority of Canadians" may agree with you on this one (the niqab issue), but we also know what you're doing! You are using issues that you know will move some voters to vote with emotion rather than reason, and forget your economic record. You are a political strategist who became PM! That says it all. You know how to get elected, but not much else!
While I very much disagree with pretty much everything Harper said/stood for, his point at 12:00 about ensuring the economy is in a good place for when it isn't is particularly prophetic atm. As I think our deficit has grown by 11B and counting due to the pandemic. I'm still glad he was voted out, as I hate to imagine what it would be like with the CPC at the helm. I can only assume it would like look Kenney's Alberta and I will take a hard pass on that one.
+52percent Trudeau agrees with almost everything Harper tries to pass. Remember C-51? Trudeau cosigned on it. If you are really sick of Harper's policy, the NDP has the best platform. But, it's best to vote strategically if we really want Harper gone.
Only Harper could answer a simple question with Yes _AND_ No. Harper: the man who raised our debt by 1/4 since confederation! Quite an economic record, that!
So happy we voted him out. One month after this interview, Nov 6, 15 and the text of the TPP agreement is now public. It will be horrible for Canada and there is no way the USA will sign on. Listen to how he spins everything in this interview! Bye bye, Harper.
