Healthcare in rural Newfoundland and Labrador relies on a resilient group of physicians who live and work in these rural communities. This documentary sheds light on the struggles and successes, the charms and challenges of life as a rural doctor. The film features in-person, on-camera interviews with doctors from across Newfoundland and Labrador. The physicians interviewed range in age, speciality, gender, and background to provide a diverse - yet surprisingly harmonious - description of their life and practice.

Our documentary hopes to create awareness about the struggles of these rural physicians, while also celebrating their resiliency and commitment to their communities. We hope to stimulate conversation about how we can recruit and retain doctors to these areas, while also improving patient care for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Daniel and Lindsay met in 2017, when they joined Memorial University's Faculty of Medicine Class of 2021. In an effort to offset the cost of their tuition, they formed a videography company 'RW Media' and began filming local commercials and wedding videos. In 2019, they saw the opportunity to combine their expertise in film with their medical education. They applied for, and received, a small operating grant from Memorial University to undertake this documentary project.

There is no shortage of general surgeons in this country who will come to give the guys a break in rural communities so they can take God forbid 6 weeks off to get the wind back in their sails. Our biggest obstacle is the bureaucratic nightmare of getting a license in another province. BUT we are working on a National Locum Licence as we speak. I grew up in Labrador and work in a small community in BC. Fantastic production BTW

You make a great point about getting locum help from other provinces/territories and I think a national license would make waves!

By's, this is an excellent documentary and it deserves more views. It helped me a lot when I was doing my med interviews for MUN a week ago. Whether I get in or no, I want to say thanks so much for making this and putting it up on RU-vid. It's a fantastic resource.

Wow awesome documentary. This resonated with me because I have practised optometry in rural NL, from St. Anthony to Harbour Breton to Twillingate, and now manage practices in Corner Brook and Springdale. Many of the challenges discussed in the video affect allied health care providers as well- it’s difficult to keep up with demand for services and to recruit doctors from other jurisdictions to our practices. However, having also practised in BC and Ontario in my career, assumptions that other places must be “better” or that doctors there might not feel overworked or face similar challenges as in NL are, in my experience, not entirely accurate. Albeit some challenges are unique; some are ubiquitous. Despite the unique challenges to practicing health care in rural NL, I find the benefits outweigh the challenges. This work is meaningful and fulfilling, and as you discussed, the autonomy enjoyed by health care providers in rural settings allows us to realize our potential. I wish more health care providers from away could experience practicing in the province. Health care regulatory colleges should make it more feasible for locum doctors to provide services in the province- it would relieve strain on local doctors, support small communities, and locum doctors would benefit from cherished memories to look back upon as career defining moments.

II really enjoyed this film especially upon my second viewing, I was surprised there was no discussion of finances or the role of the FAMILY practice at MUN The post discussion was particularly good and should be used within each regional board. From one who enjoyed rural practice that started 58 years ago John Sheldon
