Just a techno jam using all the Mutant Drums, Stillson Hammer, MakeNoise DPO and a DIY Mutable Clouds and lots more probably!

Which is punchier, the Mutant Bassdrum or the the BD9? I'm thinking to get one of them

Hey there! I would personally say the BD9, but I'm biased because I love the TR-909, and it's more akin to that than the 808-y Bassdrum. It's sort of apples and oranges if you're a kick/bassdrum fanatic, I suppose. The BD9 has more control over the sound in general (it's more "parametric") whereas the 808 is more of a "liquid-y smooth" kind of sound (much like comparing the 808 and 909). That being said, while the BD9 has a built in overdrive/saturator, which can be modulated with CV through the accent CV input, the Bassdrum has a completely integrated voltage controlled distortion which can be used on its own when you're not using the distorted output of the Bassdrum as well. In summary, I designed them both to be pretty darn punchy if you like. The BD9, with its click/pitch decay controls, naturally make it a bit more punchy. Those controls aren't really accessible on the Bassdrum due to the way the circuit is very different. But you can crank the Bassdrum's distortion to get more of a pounding sound. LMK if you have any other questions!

Hexinverter Électronique Hey man thanks a lot for the detailed explanation! I notice there's a sub oscillator in the BD9, so is it possible to create a standard techno rumbling bassline (40-60hz) with it? The way I do it in a daw is by running a duplicate of the kick into a 16th note delay and then heavily lowpassing and saturating it. I'm quite new to modular so I'm still looking for a convenient way to make that sort of rumble bassline with modules. Maybe running a 16th note trigger envelope into the cv input of the sub level will do?

@@strangerting7818 Hey it's been some weeks past and I'm sure you may have already decided - sorry for the late reply! Got tied up with development I think. Anyhow, I've seen both used for making rumbling basslines for techno. If you ask me, the Bassdrum (not BD9) might be a _bit_ more suited to the task, and that's mainly because it makes nice pure sine waves as a default. The BD9's sub oscillator is great for basslines, but it has a bit more of a sharp edge to it (it's actually lowpass-filtered square wave on the sub-osc, so it's got a bit more harmonics to it). If you're a fan of a bit less "sine-y" basslines for techno, then the sub-osc on the BD9 would be perfect. But if you're looking for that super smooth sine rumble, you might be a bit disappointed by the sub-osc (unless you use the main BD9 oscillator of course - that's far more sine-y than the sub-osc!). Hope that helps anyone else reading.
