Great to see these matches again. This time period was interesting with some of the Legends tour events. Even though this is an exhibition one has to keep in mind that just two years prior in 2006 McEnroe got his last ATP tour win in doubles at San Jose with Bjorkman. I found that quite astonishing and very cool. Seeing those Dunlop Maxply graphite racquets he's using makes me again regret getting rid of mine. They were actually pretty decent to play with. I wish I still had them.
@Gustavo-fm2vm. Not comparable because the game was so irrefutably cheapened during the Federer era with the lubricated strings, larger Type3 and harder Type1 tennis balls, slowed-down courts, lack of serve-and-volley players (especially great ones like McEnroe, Sampras, Becker, Edberg, Kramer, Laver, etc.), the abandonment of the lightening fast indoor supreme court carpet surface that favored net play over baseline play, and the lack of any all-time great male players other than Djokovic and Nadal to challenge him, which explains the grossly inflated and disproportionate statistical achievements of Federer (and Djokovic and Nadal) which enabled those three players to keep winning major singles titles into their mid-to-late thirties!!
Pete had a genetic condition thar limited his endurance, and he didn't have access to the insane modern treatment methods as well as medicines which frankly could be considered legalized doping, that Federer and the modern pros do, yet he was playing at that same level of power and physicality. Of course he wore out.
Didn't know they ever played this match. Did see Mac at this tournament against Leconte in 97. Mac and Sampras played 3 times on the tour, Pete won each time. Think Mac had alot of trouble dealing with Pete's power. Although it's one of the great questions how Mac would have done against him in his 84 form. When they did meet Mac was well past his best
Its interesting to see, that whenever John gets the chance in Petes serve games, he goes to the net and often wins the point doing so. Its Petes massive serve that makes the difference here. Would have been fun to see what the outcome would have been, if they had been forced to use underhand serves instead 🙂.
Whatever you think of Macenroe in the day, he has an incredible eye for accurate lines calls, I would question that serve call at 11:22 myself. My impression is over the years he is right 80 plus % of the time, "Chalk flew up!.it was clearly on the line!..you can't be serious!"..LOL! Robert at 69.
Sampras is younger here than Djokovic is now. There is no comparison in the levels, though I do appreciate that Sampras had been off the tour for six years.
@@atheistcory4174 Bill Russell had more rings than Jordan . Vettel has more F1 championships than Senna . Your misunderstanding statistical success and record breaking for talent .
I realize that I won't likely change anybody's mind here, but as a huge fan of both Sampras *and* Djokovic, I have to admit that the level of Men's tennis *is* better now - and Djokovic is undoubtedly a better player than Sampras (though the Sampras serve was truly phenomenal). The one specific element that is clearly evident from this match for example, is that when players are pulled off the court, they're unable to recover in the way that modern players do while *sliding on hard courts* . It's a very physical technique and it's all but standard these days whereas in the past, players mostly ever used to do it only on clay.
Sampras no sería número uno del mundo hoy con ese revés tan malo que siempre ha tenido. Hoy los jugadores actuales tienen mucho más consistencia en su revés y en general en todos los golpes.

Sampras could have played a few more years. Given his serves could have probably occasionally even beaten Roger, even though overall Roger was the superior tennis player.
Simply can’t make that claim even if you were a multiple slam winner. Ridiculous coming from the average Jo. Never seen a combination of that velocity and accuracy on serves and backhands from anyone.
@@mtklaric- What are you high on....Federer would've had it easier in the RGs had he reached his prime during the pre-Nadal era....for four years, during 2006 to 2009, he lost to no one but Nadal in France, now that says something.
