Hello and welcome! In this video we will be looking at what OSPF is, how it works as well as how to configure this on a MikroTik device. You will learn about the backbone instance and area, how to change the Router ID. How to add interfaces to OSPF, how to add networks to OSPF and just a general feel for some of the quirks that comes with OSPF.
It is an amazing IGP that many Enterprise and ISP networks have been built on and I hope I can help you fall in love with OSPF as I have!

Pinned comment with some details and ref material: Correction at 29:08, this is a typo on my part and should have been 192.0.0.8/30. It still worked because this subnet is a part of the 192.0.0.0/8 supernet. A good one, very useful - thanks! I'd love to see something like this about MPLS/VPLS too :) Or the new VXLAN is soo good that we could forget about VPLS?
@TheNetworkBerg

I'll definitely consider updating some of my older videos about MPLS and VPLS (VPLS is definitely not useless because of VxLAN and still has a place in the ISP world!) If you don't want to wait for the updated videos you can consider watching the already existing content on the channel: VPLS: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qIXZfnHNxdo.html MPLS: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kA1eUNrmItg.html

Hello and thank you for the great and easy to understand MikroTik videos, I have a question on the ospf area’s when do you have too many routers in any one area? Currently I have 20 routers in one area and I need to add 4 more, can I add them to my existing area 0 or would it be better to start to break them down? I also understand what you said about each one sending updates to each router and when you create different areas the abr sends the updates to the areas let me know thank you

Depends on your hardware really, AREAS were really designed in a time when hardware was a lot less capable and that it would take a very long time for network convergence in the event of a failure, however, throughout the years hardware has become a lot more beefy so if you were running 20 or 24 routers in a single area like the backbone then that shouldn't pose too much of a risk. Although what I see a lot of ISPs tend to do is that they will use Area 0 for their actual backbone. Their Provider routers, then, they tend to split their Provider Edges (Where customer configurations are done) into different areas.

Air i have problem total 4 wan 3 wan on one side with loadbalancing and 4th as backup .error is when 3 wan internet is down 4th wan did not activate as 3 wan gateway is reachable . But if i disable interfaces of 3 wan than 4th wan activate .mean i have tried my best inrecursive routing and increased routing distance

One more quiestion. The /30 (4 IP addresses) subnet mask for point ti point links have some advantages against /31 (2 IP addresses) subnets? Or that is just like a habit? Sorry for my silly questions. 😊 You are awesome teacher.
@TheNetworkBerg
@TheNetworkBerg 2 года назад
OSPF does not know what a /31 network is, you will either have to redistribute routes as /32's individually or use a /30.

at 35:20 - we see the 192.0.0.8/30 route still showing on both gateways. Does that mean its using ECMP?
@TheNetworkBerg
@TheNetworkBerg 2 года назад
RU-vid seems to mark comments with prefixes as spam and hides it until I manually re-add. Yes that was still using ECMP, I also should have adjusted costs along the path on R1's peer to R2 (So basically just Updated R2's cost to R1 as being lower as well)

Hi. I'm confused little bit. at 36:32 to reach 192.0.0.8/30 you changing the cost on R3 Ether1 and R2 Ether1. The failover link is on Ether5, it's not that what we have to change it? Because if i change Ether1 then in the routing table i get back again 2 gateways to 192.0.0.8/30 on R1. Thank You.

in Mikrotik do we have manu to check LSU , LSR and LSACK, similar LSA?
@TheNetworkBerg
@TheNetworkBerg 2 года назад
I am not aware of a separate menu that you can specifically look at LSU's, LSRs and LSACK's. Those are all really just mechanisms that support LSA's at the end of the day. I am sure you could potentially see them in the traffic logs or in a packet capture if you ran one though. (Should note that you can potentially see LSUs and LSRs have occurred by seeing that there has been State Changes for an interface)

Regarding RouterOS 7. According to MT, there is long-term release v7.1
@TheNetworkBerg
@TheNetworkBerg 2 года назад
There is only a "Stable" release, that currently has many bugs still, especially when it comes to dynamic routing protocols.
@hit-757
@hit-757 2 года назад
@@TheNetworkBerg Well, there are two branches (v6 and v7). In v7 there is long-term 7.1 and stable 7.1.3. Currently I'm on stable 7.1.3 since there are some new devices that can't run on v6. But I can agree with you there is still a long road before they could announce dynamic routing "finished".
