@@crusher8017 SAS is special forces, the FFL is regular infantry. There's no comparison although fitness wise the FFL isn't that far behind. Anyway, It's hard to find another nation's infantry as tough as the FFL.

There are other woman in the FFL, but not operational. They are officers originating from other corps and with support functions (like psychology, doctor, etc.).

Where were they in ww 2 when France was invaded playing the fool. Great at killing natives.

When I return to iceland in the future, I would love to meet in person! I had the best visit to your beautiful country which we explored in our little Kia Rio, sleeping at a different Airbnb every night and exploring local grocery stores for our provisions (we only ate out one time)! We love the "local feel" travel experience and had amazing stays on working farms, converted barns into an Icelandic families' airbnb rental, etc. Such an amazingly warm country...and your wonderful hot pools are so therapeutic for my amputated leg!

I would say that Camerone in 1863 is the most important battle the Legion ever fought and which created and epitomised the spirit of the Legion. While there was a large number of legionnaires at Dien Bien Phu they didn't make up the bulk of French forces. In "Hell In A Very Small Place" by Bernard Fall, he states that on March 12th 1953, the day before the the real battle began, there were 2,969 Legionnaires out of a total of 10, 814 French union soldiers. Out of 4,300 reinforcements parachuted in, 962 belonged to the Legion. Along with (especially) the Paras the legionnaires fought well but ultimately the majority surrendered.

Actually, the French are not wired for war, they surrendered to the Germans in just a couple of weeks, even training hard they never become so good at the war business as the Anglo-Saxons and Germans are, It is a matter of nature man.

David Guerrero you have no idea what you are talking about. The FFL is the last real men's club on earth, truly world class. I was in the Marines, then a contractor, everyone has respect for the Legion. I also trained with a French Marine Commando unit, I can't remember the acronym but they were also world class, same with the Royal Marine Commandos. The French can fight, make no mistake, but the Legion are one of the finest fighting forces in the world. Obviously I am a Marine so I am bias, but the Legion are every bit out equal, and have before and still now consider joining before I age out.

my grand uncle was in the OSS, (SAS) during WW2, he was 5'2"! I can only assume that being a small guy is better for parachuting.

The legion is known for using rudimental ways of forging a soldier. One of them is hunger. You can beat cold or heat, your body can go so long without sleep but hunger is a slow torture that only the hard ones can deal with.

Why didn't US Army take you? The FR might still take you - the US Army could have turned you down for the wrong reasons. Get in tip-top shape and learn French! Go for it.

The Legion is still concerned with battlefield competency. The US military is worried about check the block policies. Not the fault of the average US Soldier.

@@ssgus3682 Well, I learn something every day! I had no idea what "check the block policies" are. I looked it up in google and still have no idea. It said something about asking soldiers if they wanted to commit suicide or something. In our say, you would answer "only if ordered to do so" - or face a charge.

@@peace-now so in the US Army each year every Soldier has a ton of classes they have to do. The company is assessed by what percentage of its personnel has completed what. Suicide awareness is one. Since completing these classes is something a company can be graded on compared to say how well does each Soldier know their MOS these online classes to priority over getting ready for combat since it is a reflection of how well the company commander led. No such stupid policy would ever happen in the FFL. Example. I was instructing one of my new Soldiers on how to use a piece of equipment they barely touched in basic and AIT. I wasn't even halfway done when I was asked what I was doing? I explained my new Soldier doesn't know how to use this equipment. I was told that is well and good but they need to get following classes done ASAP.

@@ssgus3682 Thanks for the intel. I actually learnt most of my skills in school cadets, especially marching, as I was in the school band, and you have to march well in the band! I learnt everything in school cadets, including losing my voice from shouting, which was repeated again in basic training. I was later in the New Zealand Artillery, and we learnt combat skiils, including map reading (very very important), fire discipline (artillery), triangular harbors, rifle skills, grenade practice, reverse cycle, camouflage, ambush drills, hand signals, and lots of stand tos.

I agree with you. They are one of the most well known military forces in the world. I haven't watched the whole of this documentary but after the first few minutes I got the impression that it is similar to a number of others which try and make out that the Legion is full of hardened criminals and "hired killers". I was immediately suspicious of it. Like all military units there will be a few guys who have broken the law but the Legion does not accept serious criminals and has a good intelligence section to weed them out. Also the legion is a normal unit of the French army and not exactly Special Forces. Nor are they exactly mercenaries in the true sense of the word. The number of people applying to join the Legion means that it can select some pretty good candidates.

What are you talking about? Ever been to Quebec? We know all about what is going on with France. Lots of Canadians have been in the FFL.

They began as mercenaries. France put them under the control of the French Army after the Legion attempted a coup d’etat by planning to assasinate De Gaul. While they are now part of the French Army they still have their own mandates and rules. They are more elite than basic infantry in any army.

This is an excellent documentary. But, I was surprised that its historical understanding is so faulty that it maintains France - including the Legion - was defeated in Algeria. That, as your commenter above correctly stated, is certainly not true.

You don't know very much about the Algerian war of independence do you? It was a savage all out bid by France to hold Algeria at all costs. They even striped bare their forces in indo china to reinforce Algeria. The effort to keep Algeria broke France and the empire. Algeria was Frances India. And as for the legion, they lost their home (Algeria) and were decimated. The FLN delt and other Algerian factions delt very very harshley with them as they were hated. @@user-pv9yq2fv2g Wrong. By the time the war in Algeria started France had ceased fighting in Indochina. France won the war in Algeria leveraging what it learned in Indochina. The French and in particular the Legion mastered the art of counter insurgency warfare in Algeria. De Gaulle reneged on his campaign promises, betrayed the army and decided to grant independence to Algeria despite the battlefield success. French counter insurgency warfare in Algeria has since become a reference - Petraeus studied it closely to try and find a solution in Afghanistan.

What i know about the legion is .. officers can be a french citizen .. but NCO and the others cannot be from french .. but holder of french passport can be a legionnare . Meaning you come from another country and given another identity as french citizen .. sorry if i am wrong ..

@@tristandoes Legionnaires (not officers) are not supposed to be French. However as when you join you get a new name, French guys get on top a new (fake) nationality from a French speaking country: Belgium, Swiss, Canadian... hence "officially" there is no french as legionnaire while in activity.

You can join as a French native. You just have to renounce to your french nationality and adopt another francophone one. A 1/4, more or less, of the legion is french, officers included.

@Good Fella yea I know a little bit because I took a French class in high school but their methods seem q bit more effective than that class so whenever I'm able to get to France I won't be completely helpless.

War isn't that simple. Legion is used for what she is best at, like all the others units of the french army. Nowadays, they are rarely the first to combat. In the last theater of operations for France, the Mali, special forces and Marine infantry were the first throwned in combat, Legion was the third, but took care of the Iphogas mountains, the most dangerous, but because she has the best training for that kind of place, not because she is expandable.

In what fantasy world do you live in? Free world? They are used for interest of France and often US. They committed atrocities for the sake of those interest . The only thing to romanticize about the Legion is their unification and comradery that is created there to some extent ,as well as their level of dedication to the mission. That is about it. Yeah,because toppling governments,supporting tyrants and supporting terrorist formations is fighting for the free world,as well as fighting to secure interest of France...regardless of how unjustified it is.

Most of the loyal and selfless men I've encountered. I live with one of them and met another and I swear I felt how they were brothers and they looked alike and I now it's weird but I felt for the same reason that I knew the other one to! The slim, all muscle body, strength like a horse, the haircut, how they walked and their calm attitude and how they looked you in the eyes. And I know that my hubby ran before ca 40 km before breakfast when he was activate in service.mind blowing! So weird to experience! But felt like home🥰

Sad thing I hear us that the language thing remains problem, despite the hype about everyone learning french. You'll learn it enough maybe to be functional but real unity is hampered by the various "mafias" that are formed between Slavs, francophones, anglophones, etc. That would be a problem that would be hard to overcome

@@mitchellg3893 neither. It's obvious that Russians, Poles, Koreans, Turks aren't learning French very well in a few years. It's obvious that birds of a feather flock together...and the biggest factor in how people gather is language. This can't be good. I've read it more than once over the years; not from deserters or lifetime FFL. I'm not saying it can't be worked around, but it shouldn't be advertised as some kind of advantage.

Indeed when you first show up you gather with those who speak your language but after that you learn french and your mother tongue is left behind.

I too wanted to go and be a legionaire once. I was on my way. Today I thank my lucky star and all the gods in the universe that I didn't go! Challenge yourself in other ways, better ways. Hold on to a job you find interesting. Get a relationship to work. Maybe one day be a good parent. One without PTSD and anti social disorder. Run a maraton if you want a challenge. Deal with life and your inner daemons if you want a real challenge. Good luck wherever life takes you.

Being a legionnaire is very different from what's portrayed in the media. Pay close attenttion to the majority of nationalities that show up. If you have more reasons to be outside they will smell it and reject you during selection or you will quit. This comes from somebody rejected in 2016 and didn't show up a second time.

One day doesn't exist in a calendar. Set a date, sort your business and show up.

If you're good, then when you fight your own, they won't really be your own. Stay. Your own will need you. The country will need more than "summertime soldiers and sunshine patriots (Patrick Henry)," the way it's going.

Precisely, French can join but they are given another name and nationality *after* they join.
