Also a good rule of thumb the general max amount of phase amps are 3x your line amp continous discharge of your battery.. phase amp = torque, line amps = speed

Not line amps make speed the voltage is. Amps are just there to compensate the losses in friction

17:15 yes there is, first thing to check would be that your negative phase amp shouldn't be zero. Somehow when the motor ist turning backwards the phase amps are counted negative even when the torque is in forward direction. The negative phase amps should be the same value as the positive then you should have smooth full torque even when the motor is turning backwards. Also there is a safe start option in the "app" settings but this is more to ensure the throttle is zero after booting and shouldn't be turned off for safety.

Just FYI: Both Flipsky and Makerbase are pretty much the same, Chinese cheap corner cutting manufacturera producing controllers that use the VESC firmware and the open source designs, but they are not ”VESC”. The original VESC with the rights to the brand and which is actually made by Vedder hinself are sold by Trampa as far as I know. Those cheap ”VESC based” controllers also are often missing important components such as phase filters (to be as cheap as possible), so their performance can range from not bad, to explody and smoky. That said in the community on Discord, many people seem settled that Spintend VESCs are actually the best price/performance option if you dont want to buy the originals from Trampa/Vedder.
@4nlimited3dition_4n3d
@4nlimited3dition_4n3d 12 дней назад
Also additional note, you should check some teardowns of those cheap vescs you have, they can have some build quality problems such as the caps hanging freely inside the case(as in not bolted/siliconed in place), meaning that they will snap off and/or explode over time from road vibrations. And those cheap anti spark switches most often come without in-rush protection meaning that they can self destruct in just a few tens of turn on/offs and that can result in burning down your whole bike / controller / or if you are lucky, only the switch itself.

Lots of things I'd like to point out. Since VESC is open source, any companies can make VESCs. Flipsky ones are the best budget option, but they are not original vescs by any means. They are built in china to lower standards and overall lower quality, much better than standard ebike controllers though. (they also are making a brand new vesc str 500, which can do up to 500 amps cont. at 22S, 40kw). If you want an original vesc, you'd need to go to Trampa boards, but they are very expensive. Yes they have no display, (official vesc display also coming soon but like $130) but a Bluetooth module will be the best add on. And using your phone as a display is leagues better than most ebike displays. Showing all sorts of stats from battery percentage and voltage, real time usage and temps, efficiency, etc.. Most flipsky controllers *can* be updated to the latest firmware, but they will have issues! Most don't have phase filtering hardware, so if you forget to turn the setting off it will destroy the controller. My flipsky also completely failed to properly detect my motor on the latest firmware. (the motor would spin horribly and randomly stall). I had to downgrade it to an old firmware to tune my motor, then update back to the modern one to get the latest features. If you need a small amount of power, you can get 5v from the PWM + and -, since you probably won't need those for an ebike. But that's only enough for maybe some LEDs or a small cooling fan. I used 20-25 amps of motor braking current and it slows you down pretty fast. But it is not as strong as a mechanical brake, and when the motor spins slowly it has almost no effect. Regen braking is much stronger the faster you are moving, Overall vescs major downside is complexity, but for nerds or people willing to learn, they are super awesome. So versatile, and with new things like silent HFI (which can make a sensorless motor feel like it has hall sensors), very promising future.
@ChrisBuissonDIY
@ChrisBuissonDIY 23 дня назад
All this stuff is true, thanks for taking the time to write it all out! I love my VESC, and feel like I'm always learning more. I had the same exact issue as you btw when upgrading flipsky's firmware, which is why I mentioned updating can cause motor setup problems. Reverting back did the trick for me too, then updating again to 6.0 and moving over my motor settings so I could have field weakening. I hope more people hop on the VESC train! 🚂

Very interesting the trade-off between low-speed hi-torque operation, and higher speed…reminiscent of the old days they had a manual lever on the steering wheel, they moved to advance the ignition timing, when they wanted more power, but they retarded the timing when going slower needing more torque. Obviously modern ICE technology, does this automatically. So I suppose that’s what’s needed here, but great vid. Question, does it allow regenerative braking/charging of the battery? The idea this is not terribly useful on a bicycle, I don’t buy into - what I would believe, is the tire wear would bust your b@llocks. Anyway, thanks for this. EDIT woops, you cover this later in vid! Thnks.
