The OSU vs Penn State games are an example of why the B1G represents some of the best NCAA college football anywhere in the country. The B1G provides competitive football programs with the best fans and bands around. Those teams that escape the B1G season unscathed, will typically be in the running for the College Football Playoffs. Go B1G go Bucks!
Blind Owl I know it's fun to just mention the one single time they lost, but I just wanted to remind you that OSU went in 2015 and won it all. I understand it's more fun to pretend like they've never won in the Playoffs because they got beat that one whole time, but i'm just sayin'.....
i am a true buckeye fan but after hearing the Coach talk about his new perspective going from Great to Elite really gave me a new respect for him. He is 100% right when he talks about everyone doing the little things consistently to win the tough ball games. I have a deep respect for him and wish the Penn State Group much success in the coming years.!!! To be a Juggernaut in this Football Country you have to play with perfection, always follow the fundementals and care deeply about your position and execute every play like it was your last. I honestly can say Penn State is an elite football program, Just have to clean up mistakes.. Ohio State made many mistakes in the first half also. Tough Loss for Penn State country!!! Good Luck the rest of the year!!!
I don't know. To me, that speech smacks as a sells pitch to all the recruits that were in attendance. We're not elite yet but we will be! Get it...? commit here and put us over the edge, you can make us elite. I'm a Buckeye fan, so there's that, but I thought it seemed phony to me. I do appreciate him not putting the ball in their great QB's hands on the last play though.
@@toolboxtilman PSU fans don't deserve this guy?? 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 I guess you wouldn't be mad about that dumb call if Meyers called it. Then talks about guys not going to class, throwing his players under the bus. He's a joke. You take him and give us Meyers and see how much you'll still love him.
Franklin is overrated. Penn State has one big win in his tenure and that's a fluke blocked FG for TD against #2 Ohio State in 2016. Who else have they beaten that they weren't supposed to or that was a top ten team?
Comming from a guy in columbus and a huge buckeye fan i must say u gotta love this guy hes old school passionate and a great coach..we here are loving this new found rivalry..such a great series recently..
He really just threw 2 or 3 kids under the bus for what ? The game was 1 point. Fault your staff. You didn’t kick the field goal you don’t trust your kicker, you ran the ball on fourth and 5 instead of putting the ball In the best players hand,
You can't throw nameless people under the bus. He had a rage moment meaning he was letting off steam about things involving the whole program... Not the game. He's clearly pissed at himself about the game. He said "I'm hurting for those guys in the locker room". When coaches say that they are saying "they played a great game and we the staff set them up poorly"
leon scott you can throw them under the bus the players will know who he’s talking about. You don’t have to do it to the media to do it. But to go on a rant about that and baby sitting well you got into a sport coaching 18-22 year old college boys at a big time school. They’ve all been spoiled that’s something you can wait and say in the locker door closed. He should worry about closing the game not baby sitting cuz the players came to play next time he should trust his players
He didn’t say any names what are you talking about. He literally said multiple times that he knows that it was all his fault. He said he wasn’t blaming any players or assistant coaches for the loss.
Bottom line, that last play call over shadows all other mistakes made in that game. That was a high school coach mistake. Offensive coordinator and head coach at fault for last play.
Ohio State fan here, you gotta love what Coach Franklin brings to the table. The PSU football program, the university, the community, the B1G, and College Football all benefit from coaches like this.
This man has received to much flak. Great game Penn St. I understand the 4th and 5 call was fumbled by the coaching staff, but Meyer has made some pretty bad late game calls too. I have a ton of respect for Penn St and their 12th man. That atmosphere is one of the best in sports. You got a lot of season left, and so do we. Go B1G and Go Bucks!
From a huge Buckeye fan who went to his first OSU game this weekend... So much respect for this man and this program. I truly see you guys at PSU as our biggest rivals. Great game that could have gone either way. I look forward to the growth that Penn State continues to see in the future!
Great game, if Penn State doesn't realize how great of a Coach you have, then Delete your program. Penn State is going to grow from this , so will our young Ohio State team
PSU fan here. I love to tell you it was a great game and I thought both teams played well but just to put things into perspective Penn State does not have the right coach to lead him to a playoff or national championship. James Franklin is not on Urban's Meyers level or Nick Saban's level in terms of that. we will never win a National Championship or get to the Elite level until we fire some coaches on this staff because of poor play calling late in the game to close the game for the second year in a row against an elite opponent. Recruiting isn't good enough either. Franklin said himself after the game during his press conference that they are great but not Elite. Penn State has work to do to get to that level.
@@dntv7006 Cheah right!!!!! When he loses to OSU the next 2 times and fails to make the playoffs, he won't be fired, he'll leave and take another job in the next year or 2 maybe.
Damn I’m very proud to be a graduate Buckeye and proud how the team went into Happy Valley and found a way to win! But this press conference has given me more respect for James Franklin. The BIG10 is on the rise
Those two freshman running backs are going to be scary in the next couple years. As a Buckeye fan I was impressed with Penn State the entire game. They played perfect for 3 quarters and lucky for us we got rolling in the fourth. The score doesn’t tell the story of how close this game was. Good luck going forward Penn St.
Buckeye fan here every coach has off years Urban had an off year when he lost 2 games you guys gave us a hell of a battle AGAIN good luck next year we'll see how you do again Tate or Justin
How do you go from a great program to an elite program running a dive on 4th and 5 when Miles Sanders didn't have a 5 yard run all night. Way to take the ball out of Trace Mcsorley's hands when he had over 400 yards himself.
Penn State put up a fight but the battle was short lived. When you look at the state in which the program has been in the past 3 years you can’t help but be frustrated with the way the defense seemingly isn’t in it what seems like the first half every game. I also gotta let you know I don’t know what the fuck i’m talking about and I could care less about this topic
I could not even make it through 1/4 of this before realizing this coach is the issue between being great and elite. He repeatedly said "obviously" but he somehow does not realize the obvious. He also said they lost by 1 point this year and lost by 1 point last year and the reason is because his poor choices. He thought that they cannot beat teams like Ohio State by kicking field goals. Well Coach Franklin you proved yourself wrong. That 1 field goal you chose not to try would have given you the win this year. I would have to watch last year's game again to remember if he screwed up in the same way then. He also had an opportunity to kick an extra point in the 3rd quarter but chose to go for 2 and failed. His decisions cost the team 4 points.
As a Michigan fan, I'd just like to say that it was a real treat watching Franklin get his @ss smoked by us, and then retaliate with peanut butter sandwiches. ...you all thought I was gonna do some cliche "good sportsmanship" bs didn't you lol
As a Buckeye fan, I've always hated this guy.... thought he was smug, arrogant, etc. With that being said, if he was on my side, I'd probably love him. Very passionate and he takes responsibility for the entire program as he should as the HC. For those who said he threw kids under the bus, he absolutely did not. Mentioned no names unlike Brian Kelley at ND had a history of doing. Penn State is lucky to have him. Great Recruiter and game planner.
If you watch the play in slow motion, and watch for #71 on the O-line, he gets beat. If #2 on the D didn't get past him, the RB could've run south and gained 20 yards. That was one exceptional play by #2 away from being a TD.
No doubt in my Mind penn st will be elite soon. Not this year. Maybe next year. But I am unbiased I’m a Michigan fan so I mean that 100%. With this coach they will win a national title. I pray the penn st v Michigan game this year is also a close one.
James franklin block out the haters you have done wonders for this program it's amazing how many people lose sight of what he has done keep coaching James WE ARE
Everyone bashing last play call but had it worked he would be a genius play caller. You should be pissed that your D gave up 2 huge bubble screens when you knew it was the only thing tOSU could do. Bucks didn't threaten down field all game, Haskins was off by 5yrds all night.
This coach is down on his kids. That will make them better? They are a good team but he is not an Elite coach. He will really be nuts next year without Trace.
As a huge buckeye fan........... Wooooow ...great job coach... Absolutely AMAZING I am scared as hell for next meeting for sure and best wishes moving forward
Franklin forgot to mention the part where they don't have an elite head coach either. He's Penn State's version of Tim Brewster. Should have kept Joe Moorhead around and let Franklin go.
What I learned from this game is that Haskins has and extremely accurate arm. I also learned that our receivers need to not drop passes early in the game. I also learned that Haskins is not that mobile. And situations when it's 4th and 1 I think there needs to be a play-calling package that features Tate Martell and both backs in the backfield. I firmly believe on that for someone that JT could have converted that and Tate I believe will be a better person than JT and that he would have made that play
@@chadwilliams3459 he completed 22/39 270 yards with 3 tds in the most hostile environment in college football in a Penn State white out with 105,000 fans screaming their ass off but it's not impressive and it was a top 10 team yea OK
I still can't stand listening to this joker. Apparently PSU didn't win because 2 or 3 dudes didn't go to class. Then decides to put his players under the bus in this press conference.
Well said. The arrogance. He made the bad call. Only a head coach makes that call in that moment. Shut up about the nonsense of players not going to class. Save that for your weekly press conference or radio show or one of the other 10,000 media things you do as a coach every week. This is the time to talk about you shitting away the game. Taking it out of the control of your players and trying to be cute and thinking you’re some kind of genius that’s going to trick everyone instead of doing what worked all night. That’s embarrassing on every level. What used to set this program apart was a level of accountability and responsibility and never throwing your teammates under the bus. The coach always took the blame. If a bad call was made, that was accepted. The coach protected his players in press conferences. This is silly, high school coach behavior from a great salesman, not a great coach.
Players have to be just sick over the end of that game. Not a good decision. The rest of this was nonsense...what's this "greatness" that they have reached that they are so "comfortable" with that he is ranting about?
Getting to this next level will require the school investing in the facilities of the football program that will make HS boys want to come to Penn State.
I am a die-hard OSU fan, but I honestly thought after the first half that Penn St was going to win. Buckeyes offense didn't play well 1st half. McSorley did fantastic, OSU defense shut down Saunders, Penn State coaches messed up the play calling, and Buckeyes pulled it together enough to pull off a win. GREAT game. Franklin went overboard in his post-game press conference. He was emotional, but seriously, take responsibility for the bad play calling, yes, but lay off your players during media coverage. Glad to see Penn St doing well.
These moments are what make the Big Ten great. These moments, the ones where "I'm down but not beaten" the ones where coaches like James Franklin, Mark Dantonio, or Urban Meyer, sit down and say that this kind of mediocrity is unacceptable. These moments, not the glory and victory are what make the Big Ten the best, most competitive, and one of the toughest divisions in the land.
I'm a buckeye fan through and through. I've always supported the buck's when they lost games the same way. Penn St fans will be there for them as well. This is early in the season, remember when Ohio state lost 1 game in their season and still won the championship?
Wow. Watching this 2 years later, and hearing Coach Franklin talk about the fact that they took a big step defensively in this game, but that they still weren’t good enough. It’s neat to look at the PSU defense THIS season (Fall 2021) and see a truly elite, scary good defense. Kudos to Coach Franklin and Coach Pry and staff for not settling for second best and for continuing to grow and improve. WE ARE!
Firing franklin would be the dumbest for penn state to do. Like he said he took us from average to great. Bill o brien (our coach before franklin) took us from average to average, he didn’t do much. Just because we aren’t elite yet doesn’t mean we’ll never be. For example Michigan hasn’t been able to become elite yet either. We have even been out performing Michigan this season and the previous 2. Penn state will become elite just wait.
deharleyva that’s what makes it breaks coach’s lmao. The ability to recruit is what makes great coaches. He turned penn st around in less than a year after the death penalty. He’s one of the best coaches in college football
@@befour6624 okay two years ago, Michigan was by far the best team in the B10. That 2OT call in Ohio State game was nonsensical and because of it we didn't make the playoff (and didn't the save the B10 from total humiliation in the playoffs). We lost by a total of 5 points the whole season. In fact, after we obliterated Penn State and they finally found the need to get better. Michigan had an underclassmen roster for most of last season, so it isn't really a fair comparison there. This year Penn State is much better, but Michigan is gradually improving.
I just came here to comment that Franklin did it again... ran the ball into the end zone and IU came back to tie and win in OT. Good recruiter. Bad in game coach.
everyone is hell bent on the last call...that wouldn't have been a factor if he wouldve kicked the FG in the first half instead of going for it on 4th and 5 or whatever. Playing a team like Ohio St, you need to take every point you can scratch and claw for. I think its Coach who got comfortable being "Great".
Elite football teams are loaded with elite talent. Penn State has a few elite players. Schools like Ohio State, Alabama, Clemson, have elite players as backups who could start for Penn State right now. Had the Buckeyes played up to their talent level, the game wouldn't have been as close. It's difficult for a coaching staff to get elite athletes to always play up to their potential. As an aside, obviously he likes the word "obviously ."
He blew the game with his God awful play calling, plain & simple, those kids left everything on the field, they should be proud of themselves. I'm an Ohio State fan & I felt bad for them...
I am an Ohio State fan and you guys have a great team but what the fuck was your coach thinking? Giving it to the running back who has 43 yards the whole game instead of your quarterback who was out of this world SMH The reason you lost has nothing to do with students going to class either in case you guys are wondering lol wtf
The last play call was bad....when your quarterback is having a career night, put the ball in his hands, call a pass play not a running play to the running back
This whole firing thing is bs. This is why the SEC is not as good as they used to be and why a lot of the other power 5 conferences are catching up. They fired great coaches based on the fact that they weren't beating Nick Saban enough. Look what happened to LSU. Les Miles was fired because he wasn't beating Nick enough. An where is LSU now? No where near as good as when Les was head coach. So anyone who says that James Franklin should be fired doesn't know what they are talking about
Penn State has 4 senior starters on this team in their final year of eligibility. Clearly there are still a few noticeable gaps (e.g., DL), but they will continue to grow and (hopefully) get to the level of OSU which is the conference gold standard. Say what you will about the blown 4th and 5 call (if you're paying attention OC Rhane manned-up and owned it - no excuses), but this is a very good, well-coached team that is on the upswing. There's an awful lot to like about PSU.
I'm a die hard Buckeye fan, born and bred. I have lived in C-Bus all my life. I'll tell you this I like and respect Coach Franklin. he is a grown ass man. I also think Penn St is now "THE's" rival. wichigan over years thrived off of Ohio high school talent, they have had 3 Heisman winners 2 of whom came from Ohio. now that, that is no longer the case they have fallen by the wayside. they might eak out a W every now and then, but never again will they stack up man to man against the mighty Scarlet & Grey. So i say "good on ya" to PSU. I respect you guys and love playing you guys. now with that being said. Screw You Penn St, may you all get inoperable tumor's at the base of your spines. JK. see ya next year.
Although the call was ugly, will always have respect for Coach Franklin. He’s done us proud and if this is our only loss this season I’ll be fine with it.
