Former "60 Minutes" producer Lowell Bergman, director of the Investigative Reporting Program at UC Berkeley, gives N.Y. Times lawyer David McCraw insight into how the movie, "The Insider," was made and how journalists should cover the Trump administration. Both spoke after the Journalism on Screen showing of the 1999 film on Feb. 12, 2017, at Tucson's Loft Cinema. The series is co-sponsored by the University of Arizona School of Journalism. Bergman was played by Al Pacino in the 1999 film. (Video courtesy of J.J. Giddings and The Loft.)

Great interview. The Insider is one of my all time favorite real life based drama movies. One thing I will say, is it is unfortunate that the movie didn't win any awards. I have tried to show this movie to quite a few people over the years and almost all of them thought it was slow and drawn out, but it's because they didn't get it. This movie is very deep on many levels, including morals, personal choices, and the power of corporate America. In additional to how well it was done from a cinematic perspective. I have found that this movie is only appreciated by drama movie buffs and intellectuals that can grasp advanced concepts, everyone else just doesn't get it, it goes over their head on every level.

I was 20 years old when this movie came out, and I watched it and liked it even at that age. I may have been the only one lol.

46:13 - "In the news business, when people hear you're in trouble they don't run to defend you." Bergman describes how, having been at 60 Minutes for quite a long time, he liked to get young journalists jobs there at 60 Minutes. But that when a journalist like himself gets into trouble with an organization and is heavily criticized or in legal jeopardy, NOBODY comes out to defend you. And not one of the many people he'd given great opportunities to by hiring them onto 60 Minutes called him up to ask what they could do for him. ... "The people who WERE sympathetic were narcs -- I got a lot of support from cops and law enforcement"

Roughly 3 people a day watched this since it was uploaded, yet millions watch a cat video in a day or two.

Great interview until it came to the unmic'd questions. Just about worthless after that.
