Join in with the Turnin Rust crew for this Start To Finish special! Stumbling into overgrown woods, the guys find a 1968 SAAB hiding amongst this Texas jungle. After finding that the trees had claimed this jewel as their own, the team jumps through obstacles to see if this car is permanently tree art, or if it can be rescued for a second chance at life. Fighting to save this ol' girl, the guys cut through the overgrown brush in attempt to remove what mother nature has taken hold of. Once back at the shop, the guys dig in and discover that they'll be facing one of the biggest rat nests they've come across. Digging through the mess of mouse homes and debris, they're attempt to diagnose what it will take to hear this car's rusty heart to beat again.
This video is a compilation of a 2 Part series we did on our Restored channel. We've pieced together the content to show a full start to finish rescue. We hope you enjoy the video!

This is the most "REAL" car saving channel on the planet. The level of determination spent on trying to get any of the cars running in the past is beyond 95%of what any skilled person would do. With these guys its not just a job or something to do , its a labor of love,skill, years of experience, hard work,and determination. Most would have thrown their hands up after 15 minutes and walked away.Its obviously a very personal thing with them. Hi 5 100% all the way. Not every car is salvageable and thats a fact but until these guys say its dead,it surely isnt!

Lance & Wyatt, I am 83 and my background is filled with working with motors and heavy equipment. I was an engineer so I had access to laboratories where I was able to test products and procedures. I would like to share with you some successful information that I used in my work. I would have started trying to break the engine loose using Kroil Penetrant, which breaks down rust and carbon. I would have used hypoid gear oil to coat the cyl walls lightly instead of trans oil. Soaking the rings with Kroil for a minimum of 12 hours may be necessary to dissolve the carbon. A large volume of Kroil must be used to reach the entire ring

The V4 in the SAAB is actually a Ford engine, a 1,5 liter. The same engine was in the Ford 15M (Taunus I think) from the 60's. Also you got the Ford Transit that had the V4 2.0 liter engine. But those engines are very rare to find today tho. When searching for engine parts, you guys should look for old British or German Ford's.

Guys, the last minute you got it running. She's a runner. Don't end this here, need a part 2. If that was in San Diego, I'd be all over that car. It's sweet looking and pulling that baby V4 looked real easy. It's worthy of buying new rings and head gaskets.

Head gaskets, freeing up the rings, or even adjusting the timing may help get that engine to light off and stay running, I'd love to see it come back on the channel sometime cause its a really nice piece of automotive history. TR, the SAAB 4 strokes did not freewheel. That only happened on the 2 cycle motors to keep the engine from starving for oil. Also fourth gear at a 1-1 ratio would be easiest to turn the motor through the axels. Those tree guys are impressive! They dropped them where they wanted! Love the whole video!
@Black-Villain
@Black-Villain 8 месяцев назад
They carried over the same trans into the V4 models, the freewheel lever is still there under the dash. A lot of people who bought a V4 to replace their 2 stroke back in the day preferred keeping the freewheel engaged so it was more familiar to drive

A bit over 30 years ago my brother and I got a contract to do a property cleanup for a bank on a foreclosure. There were 7 heavy trucks and 29 cars on the property including an old SAAB like this one. It was in so deep and was so rusted that it literally got pulled in half when we were pulling it out. The body twisted popping out the back window which shot about 10 feet straight up in the air and landed On a large pile of softball to football sized rocks right next to the car and somehow didn't break. For the fun of it we tried and succeeded in getting the engine to start and run. We sold the engine and transmission to a guy who used it to build himself a brush buggy.

My dad bought a '67 Saab 96 brand new (up in Michigan) --- Same V4, same freewheeling trans --- he drove it for years and years with few problems --- now I live here in Arlington, TX and I was surprised to see this rare old Saab on your channel --- I saw German Fords with the same (or similar) engine in Germany when I served in the US Army there in the late 1970's --- A very strange car compared to the usual big V8 cars most Americans drove back then --- I enjoy the vids you guys make !!

Thanks for rescuing vehicles that have been abandoned. I live in an area that gets pretty cold in the winter. A couple of times over the years I needed more cranking speed than my battery would supply. I would hook a second 12V battery in series with the first. The 24V would really spin that starter and was safe for a short time with standard ignitions. Once I got it started and warmed just a little I'd shut it off and unhook the 2nd battery. Just an idea to spin that engine faster for a short time. Good luck!

Great video guys. I think this is the same V4 which Ford used in the Ford Corsair here in the UK. It was a very good engine I had in a 1.7 litre and 2.0. The 1.7 use to have condenser problems in the distributor which broke the spark down, went from Fomoco to Lucas no more problems. Head gaskets are still plenty available I think....Anyway take care (UK)

@TheUlrikkaul
@TheUlrikkaul 8 месяцев назад
Just a small but friendly correction. The V4 was produced both in an German and Birtish version. As far as i remember, not many parts was the same on these engines. The easiest way to diverse was is to look at the distributor. On the German version it was placed at the rear, on the British it was in the front. Ford named the British version V4 and V6 "Essex" and the German was called "Cologne"

The V4 was Saab's first 4-stroke engine, but it was actually made by Ford in Germany. The "Cologne" V4 used in the Taunus 12M, 15M and 17M is quite different to and more reliable than the "Essex" V4 from the Zephyr/Zodiac and Transit that is more familiar to the average British driver.

I had one of those long time ago, very simple to service since the front can be removed so there is lot of space. I replaced the 1500 cc motor with a 1700cc, it just required new links to the carb and a cooling lid for ford 17m to stoo it from boiling. Things to know is that the key lock the gear to reverse and it has freewheel so you can move the wheels in one eirection.

Never had any luck with old engines with sticky rings. It may run but it destroys the cylinders and rings coming unstuck over time and it ultimately fails. Best method for me is pulling the pistons and cleaning the groves and checking ring clearance. I know it's a lot of work and head gaskets but it works because most of the time the rings are within specs.
