I found this S30V testing to be absolutely fascinating! Even a halfwit such as myself (who can barely even sharpen his own knives) found your results & discoveries with the polished vs. toothy vs. convex edges SUPER interesting (even if I'm not able to personally put this information into practice myself). I love how you're able to still discover previously unknown traits and characteristics of an older steel like S30V through your month of experimentation, examination and analysis. A poor analogy would be that you're like a Michelin-starred Chef who CAN cook an intricate 30 dish tasting menu (you, sharpening REX45 or experimenting with various super-steels), but you're also able to still find joy in discovering new and interesting things through cooking a simple omelette or pasta dish, as well. Your hard work and dedication is appreciated! Nobody else on youtube does what you do, because nobody else CAN do what you do!! 🙌 The chartreuse green looks fantastic on you!!! 💚🥰💚

Dr Larrin Thomas said geometry is more important than steel, meaning the angle of the sharpening. If it’s chippy at 15 degrees then back up to 20, more robust.

I really enjoy the sliceyness of bugouts. I do a 17 dps edge at 3000 grit (diamond stones on a fixed angle system). They become razor blades which is perfect since I cut down cardboard each week en masse (about 30+ boxes a week). It needs maintenance afterwards, and a sharpen about once a month. I would like to try some spyderco's at some point.

I just went to sharpen my mini grip tanto I just got a new blade on and holy cow, it was not a cool experience. I had to walk away twice in anger 😂. I’m hoping the edge is just burnt or something, but it’s absolutely nothing like my other benchmades in s30v or gerber or Spyderco. It is really really hard steel and ultra toothy no matter what I do to it. Loses a fine edge basically instantly but has a very course bitey edge that seems to last damn near forever for s30v. To the point I don’t see how it’s even s30v at all. But whatever it is , it’s a total bish to sharpen. Took damn near two hours even using dmt stones and that seemed like the blade was just skating across the diamonds.

So when you were done you went to cut paper and it was all toothy and grabby with no burr ? You ll get it eventually , don’t give up
@Proudloser95
@Proudloser95 10 месяцев назад
@@Hungrybird474 I noticed ceramic does affect it like no other knives I own. Course ceramic seems to do well, but fine doesn't at all. I was throwing everything I had at it the other night, diamond and ceramic and stropping with compounds. The steel just seems like it will only take real bitey and toothy edge. It's really not much sharper than it was from the factory, still has like a microscopic serrated edge type feel. I would even drag it through a piece of wood, and finally dragged the blade into a piece of nylon rubber coated soft loop material I had close by me. Then I would go to the next grit higher making sure it's not just a wicked burr hangging onto the apex while sharpening. Never seen anything like that with s30v from my other benchmades. Almost feels like ultra hard carbides all along the apex. The blade loses it's fine edge quickly like s30v, though. Then it goes for a couple weeks of daily cutting with a sharp yet extremely toothy serrated type cut.
@timtitus2532
@timtitus2532 10 месяцев назад
Good final review of the testing. I know these are two different knives, but if you are comparing the same aspect of the knives, I think you should use identical sharpening criteria. The same edge and polish of the edge for a scientific evaluation of the characteristics of both blades. I still have the factory edge on 99% of all my knives and only use a steel to hone them back to hair popping sharp. A lot of people out there would think this absurd, but it works for me. You have a great day, Erica. Thanks
@ericasedc

Would like to own a Benchmade but none of their knives appeal to me in design or style enough to spend that much money. And with Spyderco now able to use the axis lock design, the action coupled with the spyder hole is best of both worlds. I do not like thumb studs. Thumb studs don't belong on a blade. Frankenstein. I do like the fact you can send in your benchmade and they will pretty much fix everything, no questions asked. If my Spyderco needed warranty related repairs or servicing, I woukdnt know where to send it to. Great review!

What was impressive was the Spidy's edge hitting a copper stapel and not chipping. What is even more impressive is those copper staples are not copper at all. They are thinly copper washed to prevent corrosion but are steel! Very impressive!!! Benchmade have lost their minds in pricing. Probably due their military contracts which are nine times out of ten very overly prices and that may very trickle down to us the consumer. I always enjoyed S30v. Seems that there have been a lot of one step forward and two or three steps backwards with companies wanting it changed. First S35v and then S45v. Neither of which are for my uses anywhere as good as the original S30v. GRRRRRR!!! KnifeMaker
