How’s the rudder? My only concern with this yak is that the rudder is significantly the lower than the keel. I was worried about damaging it when launching or landing
It paddles smooth. Pedals better. With wider hulls, you always trade off speed, but I feel this is very sleek compared to other wide body kayaks. The tri hull design allows it to cut through much more than expected
Definitely. The 108 is like a bathtub. High walls and extremely stable. The 103 is also very stable and lots of room. My theory is that If you are over 200lbs, the 108 is better since it’s nearly impossible to get water over the sides no matter how you rock it where the 103 is much lower in the water. Both extremely stable
Hi thanks for the review, I have one on order. I have seen a couple people say that there is a high and low position to the seat but others say it is one fixed, (height wise), position. Can you confirm that it does indeed have a high and low positon?
The 103 is one position, forward and back. It can go up and be leaned against for a standing position. It doesn't have the lower and higher options. Still, the seat looks to be higher. If you pause the video at 1:19 you can see the seat has just 1 position (besides the standing upright position) and that allows many forward and back options. Still has room for storage under the seat though on the 103. I have mine ordered and arriving soon.
So I really want an Old Town PDL but they are pretty much impossible to find right now. The Big Fish 103 & 108 with pedal drive are both in stock near me. Would you recommend these over the Old Town, or should I wait? I'm not really in a hurry. Thank you.
They are very different kayaks for sure. The big fish is much wider, more stable and can handle bigger waves/water. The PDL is a little faster, easier to manage on land but less deck space and less stability.
@@XploreAz I would sit in both if you can. Find someone that has a pdl and ask them if you can sit in it to see how it feels. They are very different once you are in them. You will know fairly easily which one fits you best :)
@@XploreAz I will add.. the 108 is the most stable I’ve ever been in, but it’s very bulky on land. The 103 is much smaller and easier to manage, but if you can move around the 108 comfortably, that is the best darn boat once it’s on the water
I would recommend sitting in one to see how it feels for you since everyone is different and what is comfortable for me may not be the same for you. I like the boat a lot and am sure you will be stable and comfortable, but also consider that is is a large and heavier kayak still. It is part of the trade offs in kayaks. The more stable and comfortable, the bigger and heavier. You may want to look at the larger 108 as well and see which one fits your needs better:)
@@ikewomac8502 it all depends on the person and where you are fishing. The seastream is faster, lighter and more narrow. So it’s easier to handle on land. The big fish is wider, shorter and more stable. So it’s bulkier on land when loading and unloading but shorter so more maneuverable. All personal preference but I like the seastream a lot.
It does depend on how back you have the seat too I guess. I am shorter so I have the seat pretty close to the 8 ball and it’s perfect For me. If you have the seat further back, it will still be out of the way, but it will not always be as close to the seat as it is when I’m in it
How about the rudder, looks like it will dig into the ground when the front of the kayak is lifted up and leaned on the car before being mounted on the roof. Is there clearance for the rudder when the boat is tilted up at a 45ish degree angle, or can the rudder be removed easily? Might sound like a noob question but this will be may first kayak so I want to cover all the bases.
@@jspyrogram I am familiar with their cart but have never used it on these models of kayaks. I like the CTUG because it has moveable platforms so any style hull will fit on it. I am not too sure about other brand carts and how they fit on different hull designs
@TheBassquatchHunter , does it work nice? Just be me and dog, basically floating/paddling with current shooting what we jump. Will that thing do the job?....looks like it will. Just wondering. Thanks....oh and which model do you have?
@@outdoorrn2980 I have Hunted out of the big fish 103, big fish 105, seastream angler, feelfree dorado and feelfree lure. They were all nice and are all offered in a sand camo that helps a lot as well. I currently use the moken 10 PDL but would take the pedal drive out or suggest the non pedal drive version for duck hunting
@@TheBassquatchHunter That's ultimately why I chose the 108. I don't get to get out as much as I would like, so when I do I have my own little luxury 10.5' yacht haha. Can't wait!
