What do you think of the GX? Even with a subtle refresh it's still "outdated' compared to many others..but if you appreciate a body on frame SUV that's old-school reliable and capable..you'll love it. *Thanks for watching and have a great day!*
I own a 2014 GX with the premium package (no Mark Levinson stereo, but the one I have is awesome - I’ve never needed to turn it all the way up). I’ve driven a lot of higher end cars of various models to include BMW, Audi, Jaguar, Land Rover, and Porsche. The GX is not a road “performance” vehicle - top speed is electronically limited to 110 mph. It’s also not a mini-van or a pick-up truck. I like the GX because it’s reliable, durable, comfortable, quiet, and very mobile in all road conditions. Power is sufficient. Cargo space is sufficient (I never use the third row - I consider it a five passenger vehicle). I’ve never driven a 2020, so maybe it’s the 19 inch wheels, but the turning radius of the 2014 is outstanding. The 2014 has 18” wheels, but if the 19s have a lower side wall, the overall wheel diameter should be about the same. I also find visibility to be excellent (did you see those big-ass mirrors?). And parking? It’s ridiculously easy to park. In some degree because it’s a couple inches narrower than most vehicles its size. I suspect you simply aren’t used to driving the GX. I’d like to clear up a few popularly held misconceptions. The GX is NOT based on the 4Runner. Yes, the vehicles are “cousins” of sorts, but the GX is literally the North American version of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. The Prado is popular in Australia, the Middle East, Africa, India, Russia, and China - basically places with lots of rural areas and/or a generally sketchy highway infrastructure. The Lexus GX is made specifically for the North American market - so no, it’s not as kitted for off-road as it could be. Instead, it’s all “cushied up” with luxury features and additional sound proofing. The rear door is not hinged over head because, on the Prado, there’s often a spare tire on it. And there’s often a spare gas tank where the spare tire goes on the GX. I strongly suspect it’s hinged on the right because in countries like Australia, they drive on the left side of the road - there’s your curb side. I reckon Toyota doesn’t find changing the things North Americans bitch about regarding the GX to be worth the investment - they only sell around 30,000 a year. Both Prados (but not all Prados) and GXs are manufactured at Toyota’s plant in Tahara, Japan. The older GX470 is a popular off-roader. Unfortunately it has a timing belt. The 460 has four timing chains. I’m confident we’ll start seeing some 460’s modified for overlanding/off-roading as the model continues to age. (Google/RU-vid the Lexus GXOR concept vehicle if you’re interested). One must also keep Toyota’s (unofficial) design philosophy in mind: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Toyota is often slow to make changes from model year to model year. I love the six speed transmission. And since they’ve been using it and the 4.6L engine since around 2010, they know it works reliably and that it’s durable. I don’t generally drive off road, but we all know the more complicated a machine, the more it is subject to failure. If durability matters to you, one might also consider the GX’s engine - a naturally aspirated low horsepower to displacement ratio of 301/460 = 0.65. The sign of an engine that is under low stress and will last a long time. Either lease or buy used (like those just off lease). Unlike other luxury brands, Lexus’s don’t disintegrate a year after the warranty expires. And don’t forget Lexus service - my local dealer always gives me a loaner, with free gas, when I bring the GX in for service (I didn’t even buy it there. I bought it used from Carmax). My wife has a 2018 RX. It’s a nice car, but when we go on road trips, we always take the older GX.
Was tossing between Rx and Gx, in Middle East the RX F sport and the GS top end are allost same price and was in dilemma. Your comment did it for me. Only negative I see is the mileage. Not just from affordability but my own footprint. Gotta make up for it in other ways and enjoy the v8 while we can.
I think Lexus knows their demographic with this car and they don’t care about the infotainment I’m 18 years old and I personally like it’s simplicity I hate the complicated bs on the new cars
Even though I would never own one, I’ve driven a few of them. The GX has always been a well built, nice riding, premium SUV. Being a Lexus, it will have billet proof reliability and resale value. It does definitely have some shortcomings as you said. It needs a redesign, with more interior and cargo space. It could loose the side opening tailgate and dated infotainment system. I’m definitely a fan of the color and that red interior for sure. Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas! Here’s to many great things for you and your channel in 2020!
For sure! Definitely for a special buyer looking for certain things and not wanting some things lol. Can’t wait to see a redesign I’d they ever get around to it. Merry Christmas to you and your family as well! I appreciate you and all of your support. Have a fantastic 2020 😁👍
I listened to part of your review from Sturgis SD to Spearfish SD. Driving so couldn't watch. I'll listen to the rest on the way back. Good listen, thank Nolan keep up the good reviews!
Thanks for the thorough review! I really like the GX and was hoping to see a redesign with modern interior updates for 2020. When that happens, there will probably be a GX in my driveway. I like that Lexus keeps the design around for quite a few years since I make a vehicle purchase about once every ten years. Thanks again!
@@corpnupe85 The X5 is nice but the options are too pricey for me. I’m afraid I won’t see a redesign of the GX in 2022. I think Lexus IS focusing on the NX for the next model year. I may have to consider Acura’s 2022 MDX for now. Enjoy your GX 460!
Hi. That's a huge SUV although the grill is something else. Gorgeous interior and looks very comfy. Merry Christmas Nolan and best wishes (and more reviews) for 2020 :-)
Merry Christmas to you and your family! I enjoyed your review ! Surprised by how small it is inside! The liftover height in the rear would be hard for shorter people to deal with. And no cargo capacity behind the third row. This is definitely a emergency third row vehicle. Thank you Nolan for the good reviews you have done this year! May 2020 bring you much growth to your channel and much success in your life! God bless!
I ALWAYS TAKE CARE OF MY LEXUS GX 460...IT'S MY PRIDE AND JOY DRIVING THESE AMAZING SUV AROUND ......VERY PROUD OWNER...GOD BLESS EVERYONE 💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞
Very thorough...great job...thanks! At 7:47 you briefly mention the NuLuxe found in the Base and Premium versions of the GX. How does the NuLuxe compare to the Analine leather found in the Luxury version in terms of quality feel and long term durability? Which do you prefer and why? I ask bkz I would prefer to purchase the Premium version as I want to put in a 2-3" lift and run slightly larger tires (liked your comment about sliders...I agree :) ). Having the rear air suspension and additional associated hardware like compressor, etc would be a waste for this purpose. I do wish the leather, Mark Levinson sound system and Off-Road package were available as an option on the Premium version. Do you know if it is possible to custom order a Premium with leather and upgraded stereo? Which version...Premium or Luxury do you prefer? Also, have you ever tried the 2nd row bench seats (not Captains Chairs)...if so, were they comfortable? Thank you!
Thank you! That sounds like a good idea. To me, the Nuluxe is still very comfortable and has a quality feel but you can tell it’s synthetic and a bit plasticy feeling compared to leather. As for long term durability, I’m not sure yet but I know in the winter and summer it doesn’t get as hot or cold compared to leather. I prefer it because you don’t have to condition it like leather and I don’t believe it’s as prone to cracking...not for sure though! I like the premium too...I feel like it’s got all that’s necessary and like you said, the suspension would be better for a lift. Sorry I haven’t been able to see a bench seat - but aside from my car seat complaint..it’s still spacious enough to have an adult sitting there. Hope you enjoy it if you get one! 😁👍
@@PrimeAutotainment Thank you very much Nolan for your reply . . . I really appreciate your help! I am glad to hear you not only like the NuLuxe but might actually prefer it, it makes me feel better about it. I do wish, however, that leather was at least an option on the Premium version should one want it. *Would you know, is the Mark Levinson system markedly better than the standard system (the only one available for the Premium)? *Any idea if these type of items can be special ordered? (I ask bkz I take extremely good care of my vehicles and plan to keep this one for many, many years (“till the wheels fall off” )). *Nolan, do you anticipate or heard of any changes that might make waiting for the 2021s worthwhile (front end changes, exterior, interior, mechanical, or upgraded infotainment system)? I know for the past few years, with every new model year, there have been expectations that certain items like the Nav/infotainment system wold be upgraded...but alas this has not been the case. Lastly, I had also been considering the LC and Lexus LX. Your LC review was one of the best I have seen...thank you - could not find one for the LX (although of course very similar vehicles...same platform). *Having reviewed both the GX and LC which do you personally prefer...the GX or the LC or LX.... *Which would you recommend for a family of four with a Labrador when this will be my every day driver for City/suburban driving and family travel (local, long distance, off-road (camping, etc.). *Do you have a sense that they are all equally durable and long lasting over many years? Thank you very much Nolan...I apologize for all the questions, but I am very grateful for your help and insight!
The 6 speed is a great transmission. Many 8 and 10 speed transmissions have had issues and class action law suits filed. I want a long lasting reliable vehicle without drama. This is it
All I keep saying to myself is "well, at least it has a first aid kit!" :) Looks like it's built like a tank (which is awesome), but that price is crazy for what Lexus is calling luxury. If you don't get another video out before the hand, hope you and your family have a great Christmas!
Sure, the tech/infotainment system is archaic, but it's still one of the most reliable vehicles on the road. If taken care of properly, one can expect 300k out of this engine. Thinking of trading my RX 450H in for one of these... Wish they would have updated the rear tail lights. Great job on the video!
I have a 2014 base and it looks nearly the same inside and out. A lot of the complaints aren't a big deal in real life. My biggest complaint about mine is that the seats aren't that comfortable on a long drive and there is quite a bit of roll going up around corners in the mountains. I've not had any mechanical problems so far. I do wish I had some of the extras this one has, but I don't think its worth $20k extra. I also own a 2018 LC500. I actually prefer this infotainment system to the new one. This one in the video is simpler and easier to navigate, even though it doesn't have the same features. Would I buy another one? I'm not sure. Its solidly built for sure and very reliable. But for my needs, I may look at the Porsche Cayenne S if I buy another SUV. I need something that can take corners a bit better for my needs.
This is only good for its reliability. It doesn't age well at all even with all the minor upgrades. Too expensive for a simple vehicle with a luxury nameplate 🤨. You actually will do better with the 4runner. Excellent review Nolan!!!! Merry Christmas ☃️
Doesn’t even compare! 4runner is a rough loud, underpowered ride. Great compared to a Jeep but come on.. Lexus is an incredibly smooth and quiet ride, the v8 isn’t a sports car but has notably more power especially around 4K rpms. More comfortable appointments all the way around too. 4 runner is a kids car compared for the gx460.
This is a total guess but I think perhaps why there’s no laminated glass is due this being an “off-roader” if in an emergency you need to break the side glass to escape it’s much easier to break
It is reliable but it would be better if Toyota updates this ancient infotainment system. I feel like they are missing their full market potential because of that system it’s 2020 they should know better. Disappointed
That is literally the only reason I'm not buying this car. Decided to lease a range rover instead and wait for the 2021 or 2022 model when they do an update in the cabin
I was shopping these a while back, the salesman told me the people who buy these are very loyal and don't want to see them change. I kind of get it. For me, all the new tech you see in the latest vehicles is just fluff. The virtues of solid, reliable, simple, comfortable and luxurious are what make the GX a great keeper. Biggest downside: kind of ugly. My 2 cents.
Looks great but man that infotainment system HAS to go.... dude my family had one of these and it shares pretty much the same infotainment system from ours back in 2005
Im mad i recently bought one 2020 gx 460 1 month ago and as crazy as it sounds the rear is not leveled off by 1 inch, im driving and i feel like im driving leaning sideways, i took it to service and they said that some are made that way and nothing can be done, im mad i have to stay with a car thats BRAND NEW and its leaning sideways like a old suv
I really love the look of this SUV. I saw one on the road and fell in love with it. I want to get one so bad but it looks so dated on the inside and the gas mileage is horrible. I may just end up getting the BMW X5 or Benz GLE 350.
Yeah, people who "buy" Lexus are all so "wealthy." More like 7 year loans or leases to "impress" everyone with a Lexus that everyone has if they want one.
I fully enjoy the quality and the simplicity. I could not stand the GM and Ford newer SUVs with their throw everything in it attitude. Lexus did it right.
Review is overly negative. Nits are thoroughly picked, but good features are not emphasized. I am happy with my 2020 GX, just as I am with my LS460. WST
Some people see what they want to see. I love that Lexus has kept it traditional and reliable. But it is obviously lacking severely in certain areas too
No. They are cheaper than a 4Runner Limited. However, they are sluggish and don't have nearly as good of resale. And the 4Runner looks significantly better.
I have one of the RX 350 but not sure when I could get ahold of the 450h Here’s the 350 if you’re interested: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-X-sK3dSFH3o.html
@@PrimeAutotainment I disagree. The GX460 is way more liveable. The LX is a foot longer, 500lbs heavier, wider, worse on gas. It's a lot more truck to live with.
I used to have lot of respect for Lexus but now I don't. Only reason why they don't have much issue is because they had the almost same model for 10 years so they were able to make it great but it is getting so old. I test drove this few times and the ride quality good but it lacks so much power. The seats were not as comfortable as I thought a luxury SUV would be. I really hope they change things up.
Still with the non LED turn signals. I'm really getting tired of Lexus and their BS in this regard. Spend all that money and call it premium and use incandescent bulbs. It's a joke. Every damn Lexus that comes off the line should have all LED Bulbs inside and out. It's 2020 Lexus!
@@christschool yeah I just swapped all the turn signals on my 2022 for 10 bucks. Not expensive. I did the same on my rx350 and the leds lasted 4 years until I traded it in and it was only 8 bucks to swap those.
Idk why Infiniti and Lexus never update their line up with interiors esp I feel like it a complete rip off and it’s like the more you spend the dumber you are or is it just me
I know exactly what you’re saying lol. It’s amazing how long they wait to redo some of their lineup. I feel like with a vehicle like this they aren’t sure what they want to do with it the next go ‘round
Lexus builds for longevity. You could get a BMW and get all the new tech, but you'll spend a lot of time in the dealer's shop. I have a 2018 Lexus LC500. There isn't a car in that price range that comes close to its interior. You'd have to go up to 200k to get an interior that quality.
.... yeah... NO THANKS in paying $60K+ for a car designed 20 years ago. I've been waiting to buy one (after redesign) for 3 years... I'd rather get the LX. The infotainment system is so old, it makes my ancient ass feel young.
@@Mike-cz2yw ... because someone spends $95,000 because they are worried about gas 🙄 Clearly you have never driven or been inside a newly revised LX... it is far ahead of the GX in elegance & updated design.
You don't buy one of these for the latest tech - you buy one because you don't give a shit about tech and want a vehicle that will do 300k with oil changes.
The Toyota 4Runner Limited is a better looking SUV and a better performing vehicle. 4Runners are very difficult to get and bring a significant premium in price. Resale is significantly better than the Lexus.
It’s hysterical to read all the negative comments about this vehicle. The people posting these negative comments, can’t afford this vehicle anyway, so they should just STFU.
