Being a stepdad here, never footed major bills as my stepdaughter has a father. Of course I was always generous to her on special occasions and spoiled her a bit here and there. I am not anyone's ATM machine. My two children from my first marriage found out I have a line that they crossed. Seen this situation here before. Don't get carried away with financing that which is not really yours. Hard lessons are costly. As for the College being paid for, I paid my own way. Since when do parents owe grown children free post secondary education?

I also paid for my own education. I didn't burden my parents with a bill they couldn't afford. I get why you might think that, but sometimes you don’t see the red flags when you’re in the middle of it. I wanted to believe I was part of the family, and I genuinely cared about them. Looking back, sure, there were signs, but I chalked them up to small issues rather than a bigger problem. It took this situation for me to realize how little I was actually valued. Better late than never, though.

You did the right thing in the end. Too bad it took so long to find out that you were being used. As a one-time step son, I have a little perspective. My father treated my step siblings more like his own than my step mother treated me. This not only didn't help my relationship with my step mother, it drove a wedge between my father and me; I felt our lifetime together was almost counterfeit in his mind. Fortunately, I got along well with my step siblings, but I cannot imagine it to be the same as if we were true siblings. The bottom line is that these relationships can be complicated. It's complicated enough with a new marriage. Since you were never married to the girl's mother, she was never really your step daughter, no matter how *you* felt. By not getting married to your girlfriend, you set yourself up for further complications. I'm sure you've learned a valuable (i.e., expensive) lesson. I hope that you find happiness. Hopefully, this serves as a lesson for others who might follow a similar path.

I hear ya' brother! Something similar happened to me. My best advice for anyone getting involved with a woman with kids and the biological dad is still alive - Run! Run Fast and Hard! 10 years of commitment and love was lost in less than 24 hours when the biological dad decided to poison the minds of my 2 girls. They haven't spoken to me since (16 years). Their mom and I had been married for 8 years at that time.

guess i was not the only one. My girlfriends son who only calls when needs something or to let mom know what he wants for his bday or xmas, got married. Out of respect for his mother i had to cancel a business meeting the day of the wedding and lost a few thousand because of it.
