In the 1970's, I worked for a week down in the Chancery Lane complex (formerly Kingsway telephone exchange). They were installing "Motorola Metropage" racks, and I helped with the mains wiring these. Since then, they've been made largely obsolete by the advent of mobile phones. Seems strange how what you saw is largely deserted - it was a clean, tidy area when I was there. Also thee was a bar area, that you don't seem to have visited - unless I missed it.

Wonderful video, thank you. In the old computer room where I worked, we had a Cambridge chart recorder for temperature and humidity of the room itself. Fascinating stuff.

The DEC Zeta PDP11/73 is 1986 vintage. It was scrapped in the mid 90s when we moved out of the site.

At 48:35 those are lightning arrestor blocks, they have a carbon piece that arcs to ground when it is struck by lightning to protect the equipment. They connect to the switch through wiring, nothing plugs in the front. I don’t see any remains of switching equipment there, looks like the only thing remaining is the protectors and the MDF, which both facilitate connection to the exchange.

The lifts sound like they are really well maintained. Which is surprising considering the rest of it looks like it's been left to rot.

I absolutely love everything about this place, and if I could, I'd buy it and live in it. That Zeta Systems computer is based on a Digital Equipment Corporation PDP/11. I don't know what model though. Those ports would have connected to serial terminals and printers. Those tape drives are disk pack units. They were like removable hard drives.

I wanted to do an overnight challenge in here, but the problem was that the air quality wasn't good enough.

Not sure what the specific indicator at 36:50 is for, but we use similar ones in telephone exchanges to indicate alarms. For example, a blown fuse would sound an alarm and light up the FA light for a specific area or piece of equipment, that way you can know exactly what is wrong at a glance.

47:01 It's only a matter of time until somebody smashes their way into the trunk tunnel. And I bet it isn't alarmed apart from at the main entrences which means once you get through the wall into it from one of the deep level shelters, you can explore the whole thing with out anybody knowing you're in there.
@tonyharvey4569
@tonyharvey4569 Год назад
Careful. If I had commissioned the bricking up of a trunk tunnel I would have had remotely monitored vibration sensors installed on the other side of the wall knowing that someone with the right tools could get through that wall in a few hours.

I can say that those Zeta PCs are probably from the 1980s, that digital logo relates to the DEC corporation, very big in the 1980s

Hey ::) Thank you for the cool bunker exploration. I wonder, if these lifts still get technical service by some government contractors.

This bunker is still maintained. Looking at the sign in sheets the bunker is patrolled every week. The lifts are still maintained. The bunker is ready to be put to use if a nuclear attack happened.

@benolifts

The equipment was to run a telephone exchange. If a nuclear attack was to happen I don't know if the government would want to reinstate the exchange or just use the bunker as a general control center. This one would be used by government rather than civilians because it is connected to the trunk tunnel. If an attack was to suddenly happen they wouldn't be able to get the bunker into use suddenly. The bunker is not really in a standby ready state, it is more in a mothballed state where it could be put into use with minimal effort. The filtration systems and generators would probably be replaced. The government hasn't done this as there is no reason to think there would be a nuclear attack any time soon.

A bunker underneath Central London. Shame that the lift doesn’t work anymore. And the thunderous sound of the Central Line 1992 Stocks passing. No wonder the bunker is so close to the Central Line. Plus as you said 15 metres deep. I bet you are thinking of Geoff Marshall lol.

Is there anywhere in the system where a crane could have been brought from the surface as a friend of mine claimed?
@thecooldude9999
@thecooldude9999 2 года назад
That computer appears to be a Digital Equipment Corporation (stylized DIGITAL) pdp-11/23. You’re right about the terminal part, you’d have the computer in a central location and hook a bunch of terminals to it for people to use. It looks like the brown rack you showed right after is a pool of dial up modems. Those would probably be used by people to dial into the system using their own modem remotely.
@thecooldude9999
@thecooldude9999 2 года назад
Just saw the part where you get a close up of the modems with the names on them. I bet each one of those would be connecting to a different telephone exchange, so in an emergency, they could manage them from the bunker.
@doma6713
@doma6713 2 года назад
Are these somewhat maintained and by who?
@benolifts
@benolifts 2 года назад
It is kept "mothballed", which means it is maintained to a condition where they could recommission it in the future. The bunker is owned by BT, which despite BT being privatized, is still used as a cover up for government military and secret service activity. Just take a look at the many BT buildings around the country. Notice how these buildings are designed with architecture deliberately made to be a forgetful as possible. These BT buildings are government command centers, switchboards and infrastructure centers.
