I see Full Circle as a house that possesses whoever lives there, so that the personality of the dweller comes back full circle to the original owner and builder, the original imbuer of the building. It's interesting that the present owner is pushed away from his books, which might make him remember his old personality.

I love this story! I read it for the first time many years ago, and have always adored it. A house that imposes its benevolent character on its occupants rather than the stereotypical malicious haunting that seeks to destroy the residents.

Sounds like the inhabitants were enchanted. In thrall, almost, to an ancient house spirit. It’s all good-unless it isn’t. ☺️ Funny how hard it was to record this story! Thank you! Oh I just heard you’re going to finish up these house stories with something from Shirley Jackson. She’s such a favorite of mine. Her book We’ve Always Lived in the Castle is wonderfully eerie, yet beautiful. I vividly see the house and grounds, and love to reread it often.

Tony, I'm going back to listen to some of your older stories. Another good story and fantastic narration. In America, we have attorneys at law, and that'll be your Barister (sp?) and paralegals that do most of the research and information gathering...your solicitator. Paralegals do not go to law school. It's a separate university program.

I remember my English schoolteacher telling a story about a haunted house in the seventies. We were on a school trip and stopped at the Severn river to see the bore. It was dusk and while we were waiting for the Severn Bore, he scared us to death with a story about a haunted house and a young couple whose car broke down - it was creepy and wonderful at the same time! Hope you're well Mr. Gibbons!

@@ClassicGhost unfortunately there are very few Manors where I live and because of bush fires in 1967; the remaining ones are treasured, occupied, and closely guarded. Although many tales still find their way through. Van Diemen's Land has a grim, and tragic history.

That's so funny! I thought I was the only one that did that; 😊I've been hooked on the BBC radio production of Echoes from the Abbey, which was a story idea by M.R. James, adapted and completed by Sheila Hodgson. I don't know what it is about it, because I normally don't listen to BBC radio productions of books, but I guess it's because it's so perfectly cast, it seems real to me. One of my favorites of Tony's reading is the Owl by Anatole le Braz. I've listened to it several times.

This was so interesting. I really enjoyed your talk after! I wasn’t aware of the Canadian connection of the author. My oldest brother here in Canada just retired as a Judge but I do remember when he got his law degree he was deemed both a Barrister and a Solicitor here. They of course have people who aren’t lawyers doing a lot of research/bookwork/paper shuffling for them in the office but that also depends on the size of the office. I believe you have to be a level up(approved)to go before the Court of Queens Bench though. I think they are the only Court left that still require the lawyers to wear the wigs and robes. I’d call and ask him but I t’s after midnight here and I wouldn’t call him this late unless either someone died or I’m in trouble..lol😉🤣

I enjoyed this’ll story very much. I couldn’t help seeing the ongoing transformation of the inhabitants of Full Circle house as the equivalent of watching modern day home owners Midsommer Murders, listening to Gardeners Question Time having the M&S Dine in for £10.

I knew lots about John Buchan and experienced some of the places he wrote about in Africa the one that left the biggest mark was Prester John. I just had a look in Google and there is so much there I am familiar with ... HOW DID I MISS HIM BEING GOVERNOR GENERAL OF CANADA 🤣🙈 I knew he went there and died there but completely missed his position. Thank you fur reading thus book. A very very long time since I read it ☺️

Love this author and a great reading Tony!I think the Crown lawyers still wear the wigs in Canada and the lawyers don't that represent defendants.Not sure though I've only been to court once and I wasn't the accused.🇨🇦😁

Beautifully written story, and I enjoyed your reading. The House Beautiful theme seems so integral to ghost stories--an acknowledgment of how houses hold long-stored memories and past lives? Somehow a haunted apartment doesn't evoke the same response.... I saw that you did a reading of EF Benson's fantastic The Room in the Tower. Are you familiar with his How Fear Departed From The Long Gallery? It's a House Beautiful story, but with a touch of humor in it; beautifully written.

You mentioned in comments afterwards that the story lakes place in autumn then summer and finally in winter. Upon listening again I noticed the narrator is telling story at “the last dinner before summer interregnum” which would make it spring. Maybe that’s not significant, but it is unlikely to be an accident.

It's hard to know exactly what he meant. In academic terms (no pun intended) the year begins again in September/October after the summer. Is that the inter-regnum? June 21 is midsummer. So, I think May is the first month of summer, and July is the last. In Welsh the old word for Mai was Cyntefin (the first of summer), June is Mehefin (middle summer) and July is Gorffenhaf (end summer). Haf is summer and Hefin a diminutive. Haf is related to the Gaelic Samhain and the Gaulish Samno-

@@ClassicGhost Aha, thanks for that! I was trying to apply the 4 season calendar cycle as an additional meaning of Fullcircle, but, you’re saying it may not be so simple? I had only heard the term summer-interregnum used to describe the summer break between academic years, even then for humorous pretentious sounding affect. I am making the rookie-mistake of applying it to my contemporary understanding of the school calendar. Same goes for my applying the use of midsummer (my Swedish background wants me to spell it midsommar). There always seem to be so many layers to these stories. It’s fun for me to do the academic investigation. If there were a sequel would it repeat the Pagan-Protestant/Puritan-Papist pattern? Perhaps. Maybe I’m just glad I’m on break so won’t be graded for this literary dissection. Or for the inappropriate use of alliteration. Ha! Thanks, Tony! I appreciate that you bring a whole lot more to a performance than saying “boo!” in the right places. The level of thought you put into what you’re reading adds fathoms to the depth of your performances.

Yes, there is a separation between a barrister and a solicitor here in the states. A solicitor would probably be a paralegal. They prepare things for lawyers but have to get an Associates Degree (2 yrs) or a certificate as a Paralegal. They don't go to law school like lawyers who then pass the bar exam. They take a specialized paralegal course, like a secretary, but with more focus on legal terminology, etc. You can usually do it at a community college, but there are business schools that also give a certificate for a paralegal. I'm pretty sure lawyers have to get a four year Bachelor's Degree and then do three years at Law School and then pass the Bar exam.

Yup. Lawyers get their bachelor's, go to law school, then take their bar exams. Supposedly you can fast track to the bar somehow, but everybody I know went the traditional route.. so I guess I don't _really_ know 😂

36:51 @TonyWalker Based on my knowledge, in the USA we have Paralegal staff to help Lawyers with all the minutia of a case while the Lawyer is the person who has the law degree and is the member of The Bar (a national?? Lawyer's professional and licensing organization). Therefore the Lawyer in the USA goes to court.

Maybe "Full Circle" refers to the residents slowly returning to the house's beginnings of Catholicism/paganism. Protestants described their 'pure' Christianity by referring to Catholics as 'idolatrous' .

Solicitors sound like American paralegals, who do the paperwork for attorneys. I don't know, though, not being in the legal field. A good law secretary could also be likened as they keep the office and are usually the one who makes the calls for the lawyer, while generating documents.

Sorry.. another thought.. Perhaps “Fullcircle” was the name given to the house as the spell was cast to change whomever lives there to be possessed by the spirit of the original builder so he might continue on living in the manner he enjoyed so much? Every owner comes back, full circle to how the original owner wanted things to be. There is no end for him. It comes back around every time, to him. Full circle. The symbol for Eternity. The reinstallation of the Chapel is likely not for a place of Christian worship but to be used as the original owner may have used it to perform rituals for eternal residency/life and perhaps now wants to strengthen his spell or preserve it? (An imagination’s a wonderful thing, isn’t it? LoL 😂)

It got my creative imagination going in all directions. I listened to “The Sandwalker” as well, last night and really liked it, too. Digging through your oldest readings right now and I’m finding that I’m appreciating your abilities all the more. It really is a Gift, Tony and you help a lot of people with it, myself included. Working in Care, helping people can become a subconscious thing. Nurturing and healing has to be in your nature if you want to be a good Nurse. I bet every Ward/shift/patient wanted you! LoL♥️

I didn't find this very satisfying as a ghost story. The ending didn't feel like an ending. Just my opinion. Don't regret listening but my reflection was that it was underwhelming. .

@@ClassicGhost It's a French name. I used to live in Ottawa and Rideau is often used to name things. Rideau Street, Rideau canal, Rideau Hall (government offices) etc. I believe it is in the first third of the story. Sorry I don't have time to listen again.
