Awesome! I've thought about doing this exact technique for a bouldering brush as well, so you saved me some work 😜Also, thanks for the shout out

Wow, great printing! I reached out just this week to a few local 3d print shops to print me a bath brush. One said that brushes could not be printed because the bristles had to be embedded. But, here you were 4 years ago printing brushes! so Wow!

Im sorry to hear that you had trouble with that one! What was the issue? Maybe I can suggest some printer settings? This one should be a lot easier (and faster) to print. Just make sure you use a lot of cooling and 0.4mm line width and 0.2mm layer height. I only used cura to slice this one, not sure how other slicers handle this. Good luck! Let me know how it goes!

@ToninFightsEntropy

Thanks dude! I'm testing your brissles design for a Roomba, as a first test instead of designing my own, because I assume it would've been a lot of tests to get to that arrangement printing right, right? :P I'm also doing a video on my Roomba repairs, is it OK to include that, and link to your channel and thingiverse? My engineering channel isn't even up yet and it might be a year before the video comes out, but thought it polite to ask anyway! Does look like I'll have to have a go at thickening up the threads lol but not sure yet.

How did your pc handle so many bristles when designing it? I'm using fusion 360 with a fairly decent pc. And it really struggles to mess with the STL's you provided.

How did you actually make the bristles? I’m trying to make a brush for work but not sure how to make the bristles.
@TurboSunShine
@TurboSunShine 4 года назад
hi! Hope I'm understanding your question corectly; I moddeled them as squares and extruded them, then patterned them with the desired interval ( a little trial and error here), the dimensions of the bristles were 0.2*0.5mm (0.2 in z- direction). I needed the bristles to be a little wider then the line with to get the slicer to slice them. Please feel free to ask if something is unclear :) -SunShine
@mattpatton1983
@mattpatton1983 4 года назад
Wow, so if I understand correctly each bristle is a separate small square extruded to a desired height. Thank you very much!!!
@TurboSunShine

@@mattpatton1983 jupp, but it might also be a good idea to extrude multiple bristles at a time, depending on the software you use, paterning anything 1000 times tends to slow down the best of workstations.

Could you make a 3D printed feather using the same technique as your brushes? All fethers you buy are dead birds :( I don’t like dead birds, I want plastic feathers ;D Also, if you could find some smart way to adjust the flow rate so each hair on the fether tapers off that would be even more amazing :D Though that might require too much G-code manipulation to be worth it.
@canwenot573
@canwenot573 3 года назад
What do you use them for? Costumes/accessories? I think you could achieve the general aesthetic without the hairs being individual. Perhaps a TPU print with a stem that has flaps running along either side in the pattern of a feather? That way it would be both flexible and durable for prolonged wear. You could design little notches in random sections of the flaps to resemble the hairs being pushed apart. The geometry of those little feather hairs is quite complex at microscopic scale, so I'm not sure whether this technique could be used to reproduce them accurately. The way they behave is dependent on those microscopic structures. If those structures aren't replicated, I suspect the feather wouldn't look or act quite like a real feather.
@beaconofwierd1883
@beaconofwierd1883 3 года назад
@@canwenot573 I need them to tickle people under their feet, so they have to have "hairs". Even if the hairs are stiff it would still tickle a lot! Also, if you print them with a shiny PLA they would look great. With a 0.2 mm nozzle they would look even better, but 0.4 would probably work well enough. Ideally you would want to induce stringing and have the nozzle travel back and forth a bunch of times and get tiny actual "hairs", but the brush design probably works well enough to tickle people under their feet.
@canwenot573
@canwenot573 3 года назад
@@beaconofwierd1883 I see. Well I'm not sure how well the feathers would come out, but I hope you can find a solution there. As you said, I'm sure the brushes would work great for that. If you could manage it, a dual material brush made from TPU and some other, more rigid material like PLA would probably tickle a lot. 😂
