It's because that analogy was always so fucking stupid. It tries to imply that merely downloading a copy of some piece of information is the same as physically stealing an object from another person's possession, which is obvious bullshit. Also, yeah, I'd download a car if I could.

That’s very intriguing, considering a portion of existing hydraulic systems are already designed with minimal bypass rather than leak tight valving I could see this being ready to use in some designs. Very interested in seeing more on the overpressure deformation sealing if you conduct more testing.

So instead of an interrupted print, you have a psudeochaotic chemical process, and still needing multiple machining operations lol. I dig your process, and artifical constraints help to further your methods, even if they aren't the greatest. You can see the issue with the porosoty of the sintered parts. That prestressed bit with just a single drilling opertation is pretty sweet however!

Interesting design. I'd guess, another viable strategy would be to design it in a way where low quality of overhang surfaces doesn't matter. For example, instead of making the valve ball in a ball shape, make it flat with concentric rings on it (shaped like WW on a cut) and the same on the matching surface. Then the sealing could be done by sticking the sloped surfaces to each other while the overhangs could be left with some free space without their low quality affecting the sealing. Also, there would be greater sealing surface and stronger action towards these surfaces matching.

That was my thought as well. Use a shape where it's okay if the thing is a blob of metal. Then, "just" use high pressure to form it appropriately. Another alternative is to design the part in a way that the check valve has a sprue coming out the end. That springy one looks like it was designed to be drilled out. Yes, it's not print in place, but it's also not using acid.

Alternatively or additionally, there's a process done with automotive systems that uses an abrasive putty forced through the system to polish internal surfaces for coolant and exhaust systems. Could also electrochemically plate internal surfaces with a softer metal like copper better able to form a mating surface. Maybe even mix and match approaches.

I would say if you need a 3D printed check valve in your component, design the component so you have a route to drill out the supports, and fill that service port with a high strength metal epoxy, bung, or a weld after the supports are gone and just let the channel hold fluid. With the cantilever design, it looks like you can fill some of the support area with a flexible material, and get more holding power. I would also look at automatic transmissions, they are full of check valves, and they work by integrating the check valves into a valve body which is just basically just a complex machined metal plate, that integrates into the transmission's design; they use little metal, plastic, or silicone balls, sometimes with springs or connecting dogs, that can often be adjusted to alter the transmission functions.

in this case yes!, however if you print this inside of a larger and more complex system, then you will probably not have the possibility to do so.

I had a similar thought about this as well. In a simple valve you could just have the supports attached to a surface made to be cut out. However, he just explained why his design really shines.

@Sunshine but isn't removing it via chemical reaction or mechanical or by abrasive (if we would create some kind of relive hole so abrasive with water would be able to remove supports) wouldn't also be considered cheateting like with pausing print(as we still adding manufacturing operation there and pausing gives us chance to give some kind of oring or something like that) i think in this case pausing would give us more possibilities

I really enjoyed your video. I design and manufacture valves for rockets/in-space systems. The leakage requirements are very tight, usually 1E-3 SCCS at MEOP using helium. This basically forces you to have 8 Ra seal surfaces and soft goods like Teflon/Vespel/KEL-F. This is essentially what kills ability to use 3D printed designs. 3D printing also comes with two major downsides. 1) you are constantly printing dogbone samples for tensile testing since every print has to be validated and tested. 2) the surface finish on even non-critical parts of the print is very rough, to the point where it’s basically a foreign object debris (FOD) magnet, which FOD is one of the most common things we worry about with valves since it can easily force a valve open or closed or damage a seat seal where it stops sealing. I think this tech could have some benefit in systems that can have high leakage and are still weight sensitive. Maybe more on the engine side of aerospace potentially. But generally speaking, it’s easier to test individual valve units and then integrate them onto a product so that if it fails and needs to be replace that it can be replaced easily. Anyways, just wanted to share. Thanks for the video!

When it comes to leak rates of check valves, the tension on the ball that is covering the orifice doesn't always matter. If your looking for LPM leak rates then anything that closes the orifice would suffice, and the failure would come from the strength of the material used to make the body of the valve or how it is installed. If your looking for sccm or lower rates then the surface between the body and ball will matter more or if your looking for a zero leak rate an o-ring will be used. Also nearly all check valves have a "cracking pressure" which is the pressure needed for liquid or gas to move in the flow direction. So 3d printing a one piece check valve would become infinitely harder to make on a manufacturing level because you would most likely need a unique design for each different valve spec to compensate for unavoidable material properties.

I think the most important isn't the valve. It's a way to remove metal printed supports inside of a print without mechanical access. I will think about how many new possibilities are possible with that.

I've helped design, cast and forge different valves and your designs are incredible. I believe 3D printing and casting will meld together into an incredible manufacturing industry soon, especially with pumps and valves. Currently 3D printing is in specialized sections with high costs, but its changing rapidly to make designs that can cost less, made faster, and are sometimes stronger.

I think you can get past the cooling limitation by using a laser to scan the print surface from time to time, and have it wait until the part has cooled down before continuing with the next layer. Maybe also use an AC unit to cool down the air inside the chamber very low temperatures, while also dehumidifying it, to help the part cool faster, and a constant flow of air towards the cooling surface, which to be slow enough to not disturb the powder but cold enough to help it cool faster, would do just that.

The Tesla valve Isn't a check valve its a one way restriction valve. it restricts the airflow in one direction and not in the other. A check valve completely closes off and seals air/fluid from going in one direction and not in the other. Tesla valves although cool are nearly useless. they are used in very few applications.

i think the purpose of Tesla valves was to restrict alternatg Flow with a very high frequency, something with moving parts cannot do since it has a delay because something has to move. Disadvntage of them is of course that they cannt shut off the flow completely, but if you care more about delay than about leakage thats a wothy tradeoff

The company i work for makes various valves including check valves for the space launch companies. We have done some experimenting with 3d printing (although not specifically with check valves). We've always run into the issue with the surface finishes. At cryogenic temperatures you need a really fine finish. Usually a 4 or an 8. Especially since at those temperatures your either going to be using a metal on metal seal like yours or some form of cryogenic polymer like ptfe, pctfe or vespel. I'm sure at some point someone will solve that issue. For now, even in 3d printed rocket engines the valves are generally totally machined or printed and then machined.

You should look at extrude honing the surface internally. That would likely smooth the sealing surfaces substantially. Extrude hone is basically silly putty with grit of varying sizes to sand the surface as it flows through the orifice

With the internal floating check valve, you could make the floating component with support from the centerpoint through the neck of the exit port of the valve (in the opposite direction of fluid flow) and print with that end down. Then, in removal of the support you simply cut the support flush with the valve channel end.

Nice video. To comply with the rule for no printing of “floating in mid air part” 1) Declare a substrate that will be removed when printing is done. 2) Extend the base of the floating part onto the substrate. 3) Machine off or snap off the substrate leaving the complete assembly behind. This isn’t entirely printing but does the job.

In this case it would be possible! But the general concept was that the check valve is somewhere deep inside of a hydraulic system, hence it was removed with acid to show it's possible.

You did a very good job at explaining the metal printing working, thank you for that.👍👍 HOWEVER you also showed it makes economically no sense to make parts this way because you can't have (a good) production control on any of the inner (valve) parts. AND ofcourse because it takes forever and a few years to produce a part. Production speed(aka costs) and production(quality) control are the most deciding topics of any production process. It reminds me of the 5/2, 3/2 solenoid/air valves (WITHOUT mechanical valves) in which the airspeed was decisive for the working instead of mechanical valves. This was "future technology" many years ago but you never see them anymore for obvious reasons.

Great engineering. You could use a coating to improve sealing without needing a o-ring. A low viscosity polymer could be flowed through the valve, allowing the excess to drain out, then thermally cure the polymer.

The advantages are numerous. But there is also one disadvantage that regular parts don't have (unless it's purposefully designed to be as user unserviceable as possible). You can't replace just 1 element that broke. Need to replace the whole combined part. Which will probably be more expensive than for example a valve, even if 3d printing costs go way down.

Yeah, also this kinda feels like a solution in search for a problem. And considering the length he had to go to for the manufacturing, and the drawbacks of 3D metal "printing", i have a very strong feeling that a traditional check valve would be a better solution here. Yes 3d lets one do stuff you couldn't to any other way, but that does not mean you have to or should to everything with it.

This is really cool. Awesome work. Additive manufacturing is going to give us some amazing solutions in the future. I do wish we could have seen a machined cross section of one of the valves which had the supports successfully removed with acid! I also would have enjoyed a more thorough explanation of why the stresses build up in such a way that the cantilever flexes up to close the valve (as opposed to wanting to flex away from the closed position or any other direction). Great work, though! Excited to see more projects.

coool! I just came across your channel and subscribed. I'm an aerospace engineer, and the industry is more and more getting hyped for 3D printed rocket engines. I work on valves. So far I haven't 3D printed any valves but it's just a matter of time.

This one way valve by itself is just a really cool experiment. This and other innovations like it may come together and really help revolutionize the manufacturing process for our lowly vehicles and industrial processes as well as lofty rockets building our future that I do hope is a long and productive one.

This is one of the best videos I have seen on the internet so far, I really loved it. I think it will be more interesting if you made a 3D printable Liquid piston rotary motor with all of it's pumps and stuff in the smallest form possible. You can even make a DIY car out of it. Please keep that awesome work ♥️

I'm not an engineer, but i wonder if it is possible to introduce vibrations so the sealing surfaces do lapping and grind away the welding bubbles.

Hmm... would it be possible to begin doing this while removing the support structures? I'm imagining a cycling medium-high-pressure system using nitric acid as the fluid. While the support structure is being removed, nitric acid simply flows back and forth through the valve with no real pressure. Once the structures are sufficiently dissolved, the cantilever begins pressing the sealing surfaces together. Then you start to develop pressure changes. On the forward cycle, nitric acid flows through the valve, dissolving a little bit more of the prepared surface of the seal area. On the reverse cycle nitric acid under pressure presses the seal area together, beginning the wear-in process. Keep that cycle going for several tens of thousands of cycles, and you should get some decent wear-in, right? And as for introducing vibration... a high-pressure pulsation that causes valve chatter shouldn't be that hard to design... I think it's one of the problems that typically faces high-pressure systems. Using induced valve chatter during construction to improve the system's performance seems like karmic balance.

WOW What timing for me!! I have been trying to design and print a Shuttle check valve and It's boggling my mind. I want liquid to flow in one direction unimpeded, but when it attempts to flow in the opposite direction, it isn't just stopped-- but ejected out of a third port unimpeded! Obviously when the flow returns from the first direction, the third port is sealed off from the flow. I believe this is called a shuttle check valve. or really a "quick exhaust valve" which you can google to see some diagrams. The bat-wing design may work for me. I aim to use this for an ebb flow system-- to prevent water from backflowing through the pump but instead redirecting it using gravity to flow into the reservoir. I am fine making this valve in FDM plastic because the application would not suffer from tiny/seeping leaks. I would like to use the rubber/silicone hose itself as the sealing surfaces inside the valve -- which I have done with success in a regular check-valve design. (The "ball" to seal was a cone shape and 3d printed in plastic). I am hoping to come up with a design that uses these same features for a quick exhaust valve. I would love if you or anyone else had any input!!! For it to work, I need to make it either print-in-place (preferred but harder), or screw together.. so I can print pieces separately and still maintain the valve in the future.

Sounds like a fun project, have you tried replacing the sealing ball with a double headed plunger? should seal and move a lot better than if you 3d-print a ball

To fix the support structure issue, print it upside down with the supports past the check valve on the plunger body and not on the sealing surface. Then hit it with a hammer. The mating surface stays clean and the supports don't actually need to be removed since fluid can still get past and they still let the plunger move freely since thy are behind all the contact points of the check valve.
