The alignment of one of these world receivers is something that actually enjoy, and this one offers a lot of scope for this work. There are many bands, and each requires some careful alignment to ensure good dial accuracy. While it will never be perfect, it is important to at least set the end-points correctly, and align the antenna and RF circuits for optimum reception.
While this work may not be exactly fascinating to watch, it may serve someone well if they are wondering how to do this to their own radio.
I hope you enjoyed this series and that it proves as a useful reference for future restorers.

This video is a great reference for hobbyists repairing these Sony radios, which are fairly common on the online auction sites. Most of them for sale are the later CRF-5100 model but most of the alignment techniques should be similar. From this video you can see that the Sony's similarities to the Zenith Trans Oceanic end when you open the case. One thing I did not realize until now is that the 220V models have a different power input arrangement. On the sets sold in the USA, a proprietory four pin connector is used, which contains pins for both 12V and 120V. This same connector (and the special Sony power cord) was used on various other North American Sony products, such as some of their late 1960's and early 1970's cassette recorders. I've got three of these radios, but only one of them works 100%.

Yes, the US version's power input was definitely different. This one is a lot simpler, but you cannot feed 12VDC directly to it. It's a pity.

Very good work. It's true that watching all this is a little tiring. I think it's a big mistake to open the contacts of the network connector. This could be fatal. Humans are prone to forgetfulness, so these connectors provide foolproof protection. You cannot give away a receiver with such a connector!

Great work! That is a very nice radio, and I'm just fascinated by the light on the end of the tuning indicator - it's almost as cool as a Magic Eye! I really enjoy your videos, and I almost always learn something. Thank you.

Great job!! This series is going to be extremely helpful. I have a CRF-5100 en-route and having looked at the service manual the alignment procedures look to be more or less identical to the 5090. Seeing it done in action makes it about a thousand times easier to do! Well done on the restoration. Looks great and fantastic sensitivity. Very impressive. (I also watched David Tipton's cabinet restoration yesterday with jaw dropping curiosity. I think I probably would have thrown it out of the window by about attempt two or three!!! 😂)

Fantastic job on restoring this incredibly stylish looking radio! Looking forward to seeing the CRF-320 on your workbench. A small detail: I think you might have aligned the low side of the FM a bit too low. That looks more like 87 than 87.5 to me on the dial.

I have since adjusted it to ensure that 88 and 108 are exact.

Fabulous job Manuel. That thing looks absolutely brand spanking new, and probably performs just as well. I thought the 2001D was good last night as I was listening to New Zeland and Thiland, but that is something else. Such a pity no one, except the Chinese, directs signals this way anymore. And yes, Dave's cabinet work was amazing, even if he took multiple goes at it! Puts my work to shame. (BTW. I went with the Ender 5 S1 3D printer, they claim it is much faster, along with their resin printer. Should be here in a few weeks.)

👍 the SW is indeed quite busy. I use a miniwhip antenna and it really picks up everything. The Ender 3 is great so far, but I’ve a feeling I’ll be looking for a faster printer soon 😊

@@electronicsoldandnew I use a long line that can be tuned, but I don't have an earth which would improve things somewhat. However, I must get a miniwhip like youself. The printers at work were superfast, but I thought they were slow! They also cost 30 times what we paid! The CNC machines I was told were $250,000, now they were fast...

Dear manuel, great job on a great radio! Two hints from my side: 1. The ceramic AM-Filters for 455kHz have a tendency to corrode inside over the decades due to absorption of humidity. Maybe that´s the problem with this radio 2. FM-alignment, especially of the front end, is difficult with AF-maximum, because the FM-chain is ignoring and clipping the AM and reacts only on FM-deviation as it should. So i recommend to use the S-meter or measure the IF-amplitude before demodulation and before clipping. Just my thoughts......

On my Zenith Transoceanic , to use SSB, you need to have the volume all of the way up and use the sensitivity as the volume to decipher it correctly. I had trouble until I took the tine to read the manual.😊

Ditto regarding your thoughts about Dave Tipton's latest. A CRF-320 for the future? Wow! It'd be so tempting for that to get lost in the post when you "return" it. 😂😂😂

A physically awkward set to align, but simple in technical terms, impressive SW reception, enjoyed the video. Sorry to say that you'll be down to just one station on Long wave soon Manuel: - "The BBC is working with key organisations so that specific audiences will be notified how they can switch to other BBC platforms to hear programmes between now and the end of Radio 4 LW separate scheduling in March 2024." I'm hoping something comes up to delay the end of LW broadcasting, but I doubt I'll be lucky.
