The newest pianos from Yamaha (the X series) are one of the best pianos I have played on. They use Bösendorfer parts since the company got bought by Yamaha. Warm tone, rich base, not like a usual Yamaha 70's or 80's piano.

I agree. I don't know about the 70s Yamahas but the newest Yamaha "X" acoustic, pianos, from 2010 to present, especially the SX series, are terrific pianos. There's something about their tone quality that is quite different than it used to be and that extends to the CX series as well. As for Bosendorfer, it's Yamaha's sound influenced by Bosendorfer and Bosendorfer's VCs are as Bosendorfer as any Bosendorfer. I don't sense any Yamaha influence in their tone, articulation or anything else. They have some Yamaha tech with the disklavier system built in to some of them but that doesn't affect their acoustic tone.

An interesting piano and very desirable. Changing the strings and hammers will no doubt have transformed it and I would guess it sounds quite different to when it was new as Yamaha make their own hammers.

Even on the small loudspeakers on my table it sounds very soft, then bright, when you demonstrat piano-forte. What a beautiful instrument.

I would say this is an upgrade and an improvement from when it was new - great sound

Great job on this piano. I think for a 9-footer, you must have high ceilings. I heard a Steinway D in a room with 8 foot ceilings and a lot of glass windows and it was a harsh experience. I've also heard 9 footers in rooms with low ceilings and they overwhelm the room. Of course with acoustic materials a 9 footer can work, but you have to be careful. The ceilings can make a big difference. I think Yamahas and Kawais, overall, are good candidates for restoring along with the great Euro and American pianos.

Wow, stunning piano and I love the bass. I am curious how the downbearing on the soundboard is increased?

Thank you for your kind comment. Down-bearing is usually increased by recapping the bridge with about 1 to 2mm extra height. Alternatively, it can be done by lowering the frame at the edges, though this can put more strain on the frame. Any comments from experienced technicians are greatly appreciated! Marcus

It that I would dream of trying to adjust it. How is downbearing adjusted?

There is no way that piano had ivory keys. Yamaha CF's had plastic keys with a swirl pattern that looked like ivory. It would've been illegal to assemble a piano with ivory keys back then. Still is obviously.

Thank’s for this video very very nice instrument ! I do have about closely the same c7 1979 (also 20 bass - much better than the few later c7 23 bass I have tested - mine have only bi chord in bass (no tri chord) ) my instrument have been restring but I have to change the hammer and shank -no pianissimo but manageable with c7 mecanique- I realy love the sound of your instrument could you give the accurate reference of hammer and shank is it weickert felt ? This could help my technician ! By the way there is quite a different for the tenor to bass your instrument : is a bit more darker but lovely (string diameter in mine in tenors have been reduce to achieve a clearer sound) Nicolas (from France).
