Thank you Chris for your very helpful tutorial. But I see that controlling only the watercolor process is not enough, it’s also necessary some basic knowledge on drawing to get the right proportions of the human figure, that’s what I need to practice more.

Nice simple tutorial Chris. I too have avoided figures for years, so every now and then I go to the side window of my studio, which looks down the street, and I paint figures quickly in the time it takes them to walk past. Those few minutes make me really concentrate on capturing the essence of the figure in as few brushstrokes as possible.

I agree, it works great with watercolor? Until I can paint like Homer or Rockwell I'm sticking with this style! Lol...

Not a 'slavish' copy either - that is important. I liked the small incidents that happen; small differences in application, 'touch' and so on. It's also important to understand these are not mistakes but frequently are 'gifts' to leave alone! Excellent tutorial.

Thanks Anton, and you are spot on! Watercolor has lot's of "gifts" so to speak that happen when we are painting,.. that's why I always promote much practice on small "comps", "thumbnails" etc... The more we can learn about the water, paint and paper... we are way ahead of the curve. " knowledge is power"

I avoid figures also Chris but I did another version of your girl reading on the beach, my first ever attempt, and I was pleased with the outcome. Onwards and upwards.

Correct me if I were wrong, but don't you should to draw the background first then the object later, also the lighter color first then darker later?...

Hi, check out my videos "Glazing Techniques by Chris Petri" and "Fresh and Fun Flowers by Chris Petri" The flowers video is "alla prima" all at once painting, the glazing video show the glazing method where we do the light washes first.... let it dry....... then add the richer and darker washes secondly. Paint Away!
