Oni are by far my favourite monster in Japanese mythology. Not just because I'm a sucker for giant monsters in general, but because of what they seem to represent. Most stories about them seem to portray them less as mindless monsters, and more like victims of tragedy. They became evil enough to become Oni due to unfortunate circumstances. They're tragic creatures.

Fun fact: this is actually a much more complex thing that doesn’t have a proper definitive answer like other mythology you can click farm because how fragmented Japanese mythology and lore is from the conflict of Buddhism vs Big Imperial Shinto vs Small village Shinto and maybe that would be a more interesting short/actual video but you can’t easily skim Wikipedia to farm views with that

What’s interesting about Oni is they have a similar role to Western demons in their role as torturers of hell. But they’re almost anti-heroish compared to the outright villainous demons. Because Oni also have a duty to bring souls back to hell that are still stuck in the realm of the living. Vengeful spirits especially are usually spirits that ravage the mortal realm when they should be in hell, and Oni have a habit of tracking them down and dragging them back to hell. Almost being a kind of lawful evil that helps remove the more chaotic vengeful spirits from our world. It’s why in recent years they’ve been seen in a more mixed light with people dressing up as them or using their masks to guard houses and such. Because the mere presence of them or even just a mask resembling them is said to terrify evil spirits and keep them away.
