Irish is a conjugate language. In this case Gan means lacking or without and Ceann is head. So Gan Ceann means "to lack a head" or "without head". However, Nil an ceann agam means I don't have a head or I am without a head. Gan is not used because it doesn't make grammatical sense. Therefore a closer translation would actually be "Headless". For example, Pobal Gan Ceann (Leaderless Person), would mean "without head" in the sense of like without a head of state, or the revolution continued without a head: hence headless in a different meaning. So while we know it as Gan Ceann as in Headless Horseman, the phrase "gan ceann" can mean multiple things depending on the conjugation of the sentence. And without head can be described in multiple different ways. Which is fascinating, and thought you might like to know, if you ever decide to further investigate irish myths and legends

Celtic mythology is underrated as hell
