Fooling around after the 2011 West Coast Ragtime Festival, Max & Tom play three pieces of their own. First is "Airplane to Chicago" by Max. Next comes "Elephant Tracks" by Tom (note that it's in the tricky keys of G-flat and C-flat). Finally comes a cakewalk that Tom wrote called "Uncle Ben's Cakewalk" but here he twice identifies it as "Narcissus" as some kind of joke, I suppose; there is a famous novelty piece by that name.
See more of Max at his RU-vid channel: / ragtimemax
This is the third "fun with two pianos" video I have posted that features Tom Brier and someone else goofing off with a few different tunes after hours at the West Coast Ragtime Festival. The other two can be seen here:
• Fun with 2 pianos -- V... (with Vincent Johnson in 2009 -- Tom has said this is his favorite video of an after-hours jam session)
• Fun with two pianos --... (with Adam Swanson in 2010)

I don't know who I am more impressed by --- Max with no music in front of him or Tom being able to sight-read on the spot !!! THANKS for posting all of these GREAT videos !!!

They’re all great. Tom is a fabulous site reader, he can even put something totally new with little or no papers; essentially just … watch me! But my big Question? WILL HE EVER BE ABLE TO BE ABLE TO DO IT AGAIN? Maybe on a small scale!

Tom and Max....it doesn't get much better. I particularly like to hear these two gents because they write rags as well as playing the old ones. I actually enjoy these new compositions more than the oldies.

I literally just realized that Adam Swanson and Frederick Hodges were standing over the pianos the whole time and I never noticed them xD (how is that even possible, Frederick is 6 and a half feet tall for christ's sake xD)

Funny. RU-vid picked up the electrical signals in my brain when I thought yesterday I should caption it to keep track of the number of times the final strain of each piece is repeated. I became familiar with Elephant Tracks through this, and anything that takes the final strain into overdrive is definitive in my book.

@orangeoranges11 As explained in the description, that was originally published as "Uncle Ben's Cakewalk" but Tom identified it twice here as "Narcissus" so maybe he has changed its name. It appears in Tom's first folio.

It's a funny ole world we live in. The masses clamour for some average Joe doing karaoke on someone else's song on X factor. And something like this... it's generally a church hall or something with a few people milling about. Funny ole world.

@@Keeper1st Hey Keeper. You've captured some wonderful stuff on film. Thanks so much. I have a friend that reminds me of Tom. He's borderline autistic, and comes across as goofy. But prodigious on piano and maths / computer code. But he can't improvise. He never unlocked that door I guess. I'm so sorry to hear of what happened to Tom. How is he these days? How much did his brain get knocked out of shape? Could he still create music if he could get the signals out? And would he care to? Neuralink might be an option...
@Keeper1st
@Keeper1st Год назад
@@pi5549 Tom's brain injury was described by a neurologist as "grim". Tom can doodle intelligently at a piano keyboard just fine. I never was able to convice him to use any kind of apparatus for writing down music though. It's hard to say but maybe he'd want to do it the same way he always did on pen and paper, but he doesn't have the motor skills for that.
@pi5549
@pi5549 Год назад
@@Keeper1st That is deeply sobering. I can only thank you for your diligence in capturing and sharing these moments that continue to bring a warmth and a ray of light to so many. If he's still able to think thoughts as he was before the crash, and just can't get the signals out through his nervous system Neuralink will offer a bridge, and I'd expect the team to readily pick up the challenge. But that sounds like a steep if. PS This ragtime festival sounds glourious.
