"Kaarvai" is the process of sustaining a swara (note) in Carnatic music. Kaarvais are sung / played with precision and attention to the exact note duration relative to the tala (beat) during a Carnatic music performance. Here is a simple and fun exercise illustrating the "kaarvai" concept. This exercise has been performed by Vidya Subramanian and her students.

Is it possible for you to put it in text format for better understanding. Like your other lessons which you do. It will be easier for understanding. May be a few examples which you can sing along the slides. Like you do usually. That is really eaier to grasp.

Thanks for the suggestion. A friendly tip: Try understanding the numerical pattern and writing it out in the raga that is being sung ... this will help you understand the patterns in a deeper way and ensure you are able to apply them across ragas.

Namaskaram, Let me know if my understanding is correct or Just correct me if I am wrong. Kaarvai for 6 was sung like S,, R,, G,, M,, Basically for 6 the bear taken here is tak ki ta tak ki ta . Am I right?

@@srividyarajaraman5255 For karvai of 1, each of the swarams srgmpdns sndpmgrs is sung as a single note; For karvai of 2, each of the swarams s,r,g,m,p,d,n,s, s,n,d,p,m,g,r,s, is sung as a double note; For karvai of 3, each of the swarams s,,r,,g,,m,,p,,d,,n,,s,, s,,n,,d,,p,,m,,g,,r,,s,, is sung as a triple note in terms of duration... and so on until the karvai is 10 notes in duration. This is then reversed until we come back to single notes. Hope this helps!

Can somebody explain how she is counting the duration?
@VidyaSubramanian
@VidyaSubramanian 2 года назад
Good question! In this exercise, We subdivide each beat into 4 sub-counts (this is a standard called chatusra gati). We start with each swara (note) taking up 1 sub-count (1/4 beat) in the 1st iteration. In the 2nd iteration, each swara takes up 2 sub-counts (1/2 beat), in the 3rd iteration, each swara takes up 3 sub-counts (3/4 beat) and so on until the final iteration where each swara takes up 10 sub-counts (2.5 beats)! This activity is then performed in reverse. Hope this helps.

@VidyaSubramanian
@VidyaSubramanian 2 года назад
To clarify, this is not a speed exercise but a kaarvai or time gap exercise.
