Stellar!!! Back in the 90’s I worked in a guitar store in Minneapolis, Minnesota where Z Vex was a regular customer. One day he wanted to show us a prototype pedal he was building called the Fuzz Factory. So after hours he came by and plugged it into an old Marshall Major we had at the time and proceeded to demonstrate what the end of the world might sound like. It was loud, it was fuzzy, and it was glorious. What Mick was playing at the end reminded me of that day. Thank you!

Might be worth a rummage through Johnny's collection again and instead of going for the most noteworthy icons, maybe worth a show to look at some forgotten vintage amp tones. I've been needlessly GASing over Gibson Skylarks and the like. But why look at just vintage Fender, Marshall, Vox when weird and wonderful stuff exists at nowhere near as much money to require selling you body & it's parts. A walk down the back alley of Ampegs, Silvertones, Supros, Gibson amps, etc might be worth a look into.

Rewatching. This is my favorite episode. I’d love to see this topic brought back ...maybe a “...five more...” episode. I’m dying to see what y’all could do with an original 1959 Magnatone 213. However, despite that being my amp, I’m kind of obsessed with vintage British amplifiers. I find RU-vid lacking enough content exploring the lesser known British amps. Sellers, Simms Watts, Watkins, Sound City, WEM’s, Matamp, etc. I’d be more than happy to one day rewatch THAT episode.

Mick and Dan, that is the joy of playing vintage amp! Modern stuff comes close but there is something special about an old Fender or Marshall breaking up that just can’t be beat. The JTM 45 is the reason I fell in love with vintage amps. Give me that amp and a clean boost (or fuzz) and you got rhythm and lead. Need clean? Backup the volume knob. Vintage technology that will forever be the cornerstone of rock!

For all those hearing the 62 Princeton amp and thinking it sounds like a fart box...a couple years back I acquired an early 63 Princeton Amp, still the same 6g2 circuit and colour as this 1962. (Soon the 6g2 changed to blackface looks with white knobs, like Mike Campbell was using on later Tom Petty tours) The stock 10” Oxford speaker is known to be “farty” to say it best but dialed back to slightly lower volumes you can hear there is some sweet magic happening there. My ever so amazing friend indefinitely loaned me, if I remember correctly, a Fender (made by Eminence for bassman re issues etc.) 10” albino blue. And as soon as we started schwanging away with which ever strat was closest,, I’ve been in heaven. The alnico has given it it the slight bit of raised headroom it so desperately needed, tightened up the flubby bottom end, and added a whole bouquet of pristine mids chimey highs which was exactly what I was looking for and so much more. I use mainly Several strats, a les Paul and a PRS custom 22, and my other amps are a 72 twin reverb, Marshall 1987x (pre fx loop) and a Mesa dual rectifier roadster head. But since installing the alnico, the Princeton has been getting most of the glory. Soooooo sweeeeeetttt indeed. Thanks for the speaker Jeff!!! Really hope u never need it back lol

hey guys! great show! but i was so looking forward to the JTM45 exploration.... as its one of my absolute fav amps for clean or overdriven sounds. A few reasons why older amps can sound better... 1. The older timber in the cabs, just like older timber in guitars has become drier, the sap has crystallised and the timber has become more resonant. If you think the cab doesn't have much effect, pull your speaker out and play it without the cab. You'll be shocked at the difference! 2. Old carbon comp resistors can drift up in value, so for example a screen grid resistor with a higher value will give you more compression, plate resistors with a higher value will increase gain etc. 3. Capacitors can drop in value as they get older, so if a bypass or coupling cap drops in value, it has the effect of reducing bass and tightening up the tone, reducing the excessive bass that can cause Fenders to fart out at higher gain levels. 4. Also the older speaker cones would have been more likely to have been built from old growth timber, so the fibres in the paper would have been of a better quality, more woody sounding... My 20c worth....

Thank you so much, Guys. I think it was one of my favourite episodes so far. Also, I will let you into a little secret. You can try to find an early Silverface Vibrolux Reverb (70-72), which still sounds absolutely amazing, chimey with those 2 x 10`s and it will not ruin your budget so much. Well, I did. And I still simply cannot believe just how great those amp were and how lucky I am to own one. Perfect amp, it will stay with me forever. I bet you would love it too.

This episode is a sumptuous treat for a crunchlover's ears. If you guys could re-edit this with a few more floating headers to identify which amps you're playing when, it'd really help us viewers to follow and keep track at a glance of the differences in amp voicing (and the pedal x amp effects). Also looks like maybe your vid title "...Vintage Amps From 1958 - 1966" should be rather "... From 1958 - 1969." ( I suppose that's only if you count the play-out.) But that's all niggling. ++++

More than the other brands I have had as well. The amount of power, ample low end, and the beautiful highs is really inspirational. If you can’t get a vintage model I would recommend it! Thanks guys for proving once AGAIN the importance of using the proper tool for the job at hand. So often we guitar tone nerds tend to bestow mythical status to the gear that touches our souls. In the end, these devices are but mere tools. The 'magic' ultimately filters from the hands, hearts, minds and spirits of wonderfully flawed human beings. What an epic episode!

I've got a '63 Princeton and can say that it is the best room sound of any amp I've ever owned. Vintage or modern. I always dismissed the Princeton as a student model amp, but it is no joke. Especially the 6G2 circuit Princeton. The only thing that has come close for me is a 1955 5E4 Super (factory 6V6 power section).

I was never an amp snob . Until when test driving my circa 1940 instrument at the Vintage Guitar dealer , and he randomly plugged me into a Tweed Princeton ! Suddenly I realized what things were supposed to sound like .

When Mick starts playing the 335 at about 34 minutes is one of the best tones I’ve ever heard! I had to rewind and listen to it again. Incredible!

I had the exact same thought and I started scrolling through the comments to see if anyone else felt the same way. 335 into a breaking up bassman = gold

It really doesn’t help my craving for a 335 though! Maybe 2019 is the year for me.

Am I the only one that could not dig the brownface sound? Other amps all sounding great, but that 1962 Princeton, would sell it the day I got it... But again, great show. And also good to know what not to be diggin' on. On the other hand, that Super Reverb, damned that is a sound!!!!

It sounded all papery and weird. I think it woulf be fun try it with an octave fuzz, but that's about it

It was the speaker in that one, along with that specific example of the Princeton not being as ready to overdrive as some other examples of that amp. See ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RcxQYlfZ46g.html

Almost like a broken, gated fuzz at low vol or something It's interesting that so many people thought that sounded good 🤔

I think it’s all about context. I don’t think I’d like it as my main tone, but I can easily imagine loving it in certain songs. Kinda like how some of Muse’s guitar tones can be pretty nasty on their own, but they sound fantastic in the mix (IMHO).

Great show guys, just AMAZING! Just a thought on the reissues. I've had the Princeton reverb reissue going on 6 years now. This spring I decided to retube with NOS vintage tubes. I was amazed at the difference it made. Especially the rectifier. While I think no one would confuse it with a vintage amp. It took a huge step in the right direction. I was a bit skeptical at first with all the stuff I read of tubes not making a difference, it was a big difference. I'm as happy as a D&M pedal with the boost on!

THOSE TONES!!!!! This was the best sounding video you have ever put out! Even better than the ultimate wet/dry/wet video. I have never been so moved by anything on you tube. Not only were the amps amazing, but you guys were playing at another level. Great show!

How are the new guitars ( fret jobs ) fellas? Looks like you have both fallen back-in love with your guitars? Nothing like that Fender Clean. I melt - every time I play my Stratocaster thru my 65 Princeton Reverb = Tone Heaven for me.

Re: Chris Layton, I met him in the shop i work at when he was touring with Kenny Wayne Shepherd. I asked him to sign a drum head for the wall which he gladly did. He's got that thing about him where even if you hadnt heard of him you could sense he was kind of a big deal, in the nicest way, he was totally modest and assuming but with an aura of "cool"

One brownface Princeton and a blackface Princeton Reverb in stereo is pretty much my favorite! My EP has that sound all over :)
@brianingram2068
@brianingram2068 5 лет назад
I wish their benefactor had a tweed Princeton in lieu of the brownface Princeton. I once had one to pair with a blackface Princeton Reverb, and they complement each other perfectly!
@nickybarbato8811
@nickybarbato8811 5 лет назад
@@brianingram2068 Funny you say that. It is the Tweed Vibrolux that is a closer "match" in power to the Brownface Princeton than the Tweed Princeton is. 2 6v6s and 10 watts as opposed to the Tweed Princeton's 1 6v6 and 7 watts. Regardless of model/size, with the tweed occupying more midrange territory than the blackface, they definitely work well together. I often run a tweed Deluxe in stereo with a BF/SF Princeton Reverb or Brownface Princeton , and the 1x12 of the Deluxe really puts out a lot of volume comparatively, even though the wattage is basically the same. Plus all rigs and rooms and players sound different, and all vintage amps can be different from each other even if they are the same model.... That's why this is all fun! The brownface Princeton, to me, is not directly exactly in the middle of tweed eras and blackface eras sonically; it definitely favors the Tweed mids thing.. with some extra sparkle
@brianingram2068
@brianingram2068 5 лет назад
@@nickybarbato8811 You're correct about comparative power of the amps. The magic of the setup I described is the tweed Princeton can be cranked into distortion (with a lot of mids) at a volume that equals the Princeton Reverb that is still clean (and mid-scooped). It gives a clean yet distorted sound that fills in the whole range of the guitar, and sounds pretty good for SRV type sounds at home-practice volumes. Also agreed that the brown Princeton (and brown Deluxe) favor the tweeds somewhat. The brown Deluxe has some different parts values that cause it to break up differently/more than the tweed (and thin out the mud), and the original speaker is a big factor in a sound that's neither tweed nor blackface. Old amps are almost as big a rabbit-hole as pedals!!
@nickybarbato8811
@nickybarbato8811 5 лет назад
@@brianingram2068 very smart. yes very cool! More of a hi-fi scooped clean sound paired with the tweed bark. Love it. Thanks for sharing. Definitely a huge rabbit-hold :) And yes, speakers are such a big factor with all of these amps too!
