Hey, Doc! Sorry for the long post but Im wondering if functional scoliosis can also be caused by sudden weight gain? Im 5ft and 60kgs woman with C cup breasts before pandemic and became 80kgs during lockdown and my breasts have grown larger due to fat. I recently got a chest xray for a check up and my results said "No diseases. Mild Thoracic dextroscoliosis is seen" but I never had any results like that before pandemic and when I was still physically active.
Hi there! I cannot give you medical advice, so I recommend asking your doctor these same questions. It is possible for weight gain to contribute to a slight lateral deviation of the spine, especially if the spinal muscles are not strong enough to maintain an erect posture of the spine with the addition of the new weight. With that said, it is equally likely to do with other factors that may have changed that could be affecting your spine. For example, have you been sitting more during the pandemic? Have you been using the computer more? Those things can have a significant effect on posture and the spine, but the weight gain can certainly still be part of it. I suggest asking your doctor what they think about it, and maybe they can help you reverse the effects. All the best, Dr. V
