Love your fundamental Fridays. Being new to this after 40+ years I would love to see a video on the different types of glue, since back in the day there was only the modeling glue. Great job, keep up the good work for all of us that are trying to learn this stuff.
Hi old man, i am new to your channel and i like your video. I am 48 now i did some scale modeling when i was young but my cars are not as great as yours. But now i got more tools , space, technic, patience, and more TIME. Its time now for me to go back in scale modeling and enjoy this fantastic hobby. Thanks again for your technic and your video God bless you to.
Good info & well presented. Once body is washed, should you be wearing nitrile gloves to prevent body oils from recontamination the body surface? Thanks for sharing your expertise, knowledge & experience. Rick
That is a good tip about using pressurised air from the airbrush to dry off the body shell / parts after washing. I normally let them air , in a plastic tub with the lid partially open. I do wonder if this sometimes left water marks on the plastic surface (particularly if the mains tap water is slightly hard?) which could then cause paint / primer adhesion issues?
I didn't know about the plastic container aspect. I have a metal paint booth so I just leave my freshly painted stuff there. So I never dealt with the aspect you mention. And I even fact checked it. Not to prove you wrong but to find out more of what I didn't know. And you are so right. Pretty much all you mentioned her is how I do it too. But I used to paint real cars so I have that to draw from. Love these helpful tips too.
Going to Lowes and get me a metal cabinet.. I bought about 300 dollars in tools last weekend that you suggested we have to start.. yep when I said you lit a fire , it was with high octane. Thank you
Sorry to tell you but I really like learning from your mistakes:) been doing this for years and love learning new ways and new techniques on making mine better! Think most of us struggle with prepping and painting :( but with these videos I hope most of us can complete these hiccups with their painting process and succeed and teach the younger kids how great this hobby is! Keep up the good work can't wait for your next video
Hey Don, Chris here……. Cool tip!!!! Just an extra thought I just came up with in case anyone wants 2 get a metal box or a container 2 put the kit body in. A popcorn tin from the holidays is a great vessel to use. They are metal, cheap & should do the trick I would imagine……. Have a great weekend!!!!!!!
Great Vids. When about to wash a model...wash hands first. Don't handle there after, prior to & during paint. Glove up, if need be. As you point out, dust is an enemy, so too finger contamination and static-charge the hidden quiet destroyer. Plastic is the worst... Enjoying your content SMT.
Don, I have purchased both videos and Iam flabbergasted on all the great learning info so glad I did and truly look forward to more thanks a million!! videos are awesome!!
Like a dummy I moved into the suburbs and these houses don't have those old deep basement sinks and man I miss the one we had lol. Great video Old Man as always!
First of all. Thank you very much for your tips and tricks. I very much appreciate it. My experience on this: I never again use dish washer soap because they are refattening. I don't know if that word exists in English but it means that it is good for your hands. I do it with clear water and a brush. And afterwards with ethyl alcohol to remove grease.
I like soft scrub non chlorine because it get in places you can miss with the sand paper then dawn as a final wash then rinse completely. Then I use an alcohol wipe just before paint. I'm going to try the metal box cover for sure.
Thank you for this! I’m into pairing hardbody RC’s and I tell people all the time, tools are more important. Np need to buy cheap airbrushes because you’re eventually going to buy a good one. I wish I would have gotten good tools from the beginning
That's how the basements in houses here in Chicago look, same sink and everything. Newer homes not so much, but if you grew up with that huge basement sink you will sorely miss it when you move into a newer home and it doesn't have it. Great utility to have.
Shhhhh , what I do as a side gig is nunya bidness! 😂. In all seriousness , it is fugly , but man, is it effective ! The new ones just don’t even come close in comparison…..
I was just working on a JF resin 32 vicky -body- I did not use Dawn on it-I know better and when I sprayed a light coat of primer on it-I got fisheyes on the roof--Yes your advice is the truth---on washing the body--NO QUESTION_
Thanks for the great material, is the sanding process upto 12000 done again on the primer once its shot? or only on the bare plastic prior to shooting the primer. Thanks James.
Hi Don thanks for the Fundamental Friday's. Got one of those plastic spray booths, would it be beneficial to line the inside with sheet metal do reduce any static charge?
Hey Chris here….. I’m wondering if lining the plastic portable spray booth like I have with aluminum foil on the inside & the top & bottom of the inside would work well too. I say this just in the event that sheet metal isn’t an option…… I would imagine the foil would do the same since it’s a very thin metal that can be shaped & formed.
Interesting. So does the metal box need to be grounded to avoid the electrostatic issue? Side note, I've been collecting tools and equipment for weeks, have yet to tackle a kit lol.
@@ScaleModelTechniques Forty years in space electronics with yearly classes on ESD (electrostatic discharge) and no the box does not to be grounded but it is much better if it is. Any time I handled ESD sensitive electronic parts I needed to be grounded thru a wrist strap to drain any charge collected on/in me.
can i use krylon or krylon fusion paint on my 2006 ford gt model that im working on? and can satin black be used as a base coat before a color coat goes on?
