He was not born with the expectation of inheriting the crown and he did not want it. All he wanted was the quiet life of an English country gentleman. But when duty summoned him, he did not shrink from his responsibility to his country and people even during the years of mortal danger to Britain. A truly great King. Memory eternal!

My mother and father were living in London at this time . The nation knew the king was ill , his death was still a a great sadness to the world . As the commentator says , sixteen years in which the world changed and suffered as never before . And the duty of a man who was never expecting to be king was unwavering. He set a standard.

As much as George did not want the crown, he was the epitome of elegance, class, and knowledge of responsibility to his beloved country. Both he, and the Queen Mother, were amazing examples of loyalty, and royalty; seeing how she insisted on staying in England during the war, spoke volumes of her love and dedication to her family and her country. These are the real reasons that Edward was never to sit as King, he lacked the expectations and the responsibility to the people. He fell far, far below the standards of loyalty and dedication. Hindsight is a marvellous thing. It allows those that wish to, the ability to criticise even monarchs (former and then current) who could not possibly see what we now know. In this case, the man you criticised, a former Sovereign, like the balance of humanity alive at that time, could not have possibly imagined or realised what was to come. He was simply acting as a British envoy of peace and co-operation I believe, and would have solidly been acting in the interests of Britain and the Commonwealth at the time, and not that of Germany. Remember, at that time, a lot of people in Britain and elsewhere were actually inspired by the ‘New German Order’ displayed until the horrors of later years came to pass. No person alive at the time had any conception of that unlike yourself with the power of historical knowledge.

The King as a Constitutional monarch did precisely what was needed when faced by war. He understood the nature of the Hitler threat, and why it was important to face it, and not trust Hitler any more. And he supported those who argued against suŕrender. And ultimately he posed the problem for the, defeatist, appeasement lobby, that they would have to go ahead in the knowledge that the King did not support them, and the people would know this. He then gave the country what it needed in the war- encouragement , hope , and the example of staying on and sharing the risk. He, and his father, also both passed on to his daughter what they believed the monarch should and should not do, which with some changes to reflect changing times, is reflected in how she saw her role, how she performed her duties , and how she responded herself in talking to the nation at difficult times, when it again needed a solid steadying voice. A hard , unexpected, unwanted, job- bravely and well done.

So, this is a man who pretty much died for his country. Had he not been king he certainly would not have been chain-smoking his lungs away during WW2. And with his stuttering, he could've been the one to say "Unh unhhh, not today! I'll give the thrown to my brother the Duke of Gloucester". But noooo, he just lit 'em up and kept moving, like a boss. I wonder what he would think of Harry and Andrew....Of all the British monarchs, I respect this man the most.

Her late Majesty once said in a speech “My beloved father died far too young” boy was she right. I believe King George VI was one of the best kings of England. Being American I wasn’t used to seeing cars driving on the left side of the road or cars not automatically stopping for us crossing the street, but I’d love to live there none the less, and I look up to King George VI, Queen Elizabeth II, and Winston Churchill. All of whom we should all try to be. When King George VI died tragically and suddenly but peacefully, Sandringham, London, and Windsor looked way more sorrowful then when Queen Elizabeth II died. I think there is one word for that: “Unexpected” his death and his funeral were both unexpected. Queen Elizabeth’s death was so expected yet so unexpected and sad at the same time. Both were great and we won’t see their likes ever again.

Those were Kings that really rule. They knew how difficult it would be but they ruled. They were real men. Even their wives stood beside them and gave them every thing. The British monarchs never left their homeland during the war but stayed with the people they loved until the war ended. During his reign and World War ll, he created a famine in Bengal confiscating all the godowns of food across the country to feed his armies to fight the war. And the wholesalers, retailers (grocery shopkeepers) increased the price of it (food) like rice, potatoes everything. Only the government employees, politicians, businessmen and riches survived.
