jec1ny The burden of becoming King may be one reason why QE has yet to rescend the crown, and let Charles take it. Her mom also grilled it in her head duty at all cost. Unfrotunately this philosophy destroyed Maragaret in many ways, allowed Charles to be bullied into a marriage that was an absolute failure, and a sense of indifference or apathy until it actually threatened her.

@quodterminosjustifyquodmed6616
Well actually, if you look at history of the Earth, the vast majority of all Kings and Emperors (and Queens and Empresses) that ever lived were absolutely evil, utterly selfish, cruel and tyrannical psychopaths lol, the rulers and regents of the Julio-Claudian, Borgia, Plantagenet, and Habsberg dynasties being amongst the most diabolical. But yes, as a pleasant contrast against the long terrible history of the rule of vile monsters, King George VI was one of the few Monarchs that you could count on one hand that was both a good man, and a good King. May he R.I.P.

That is the mark of a great man and leader. The prime minister may be the political leader of the nation, but King George was a leader in more ways than one. I can see that he genuinely loved and cared about his subjects. To stay in London when the bombs were falling and everyone else was telling him to leave for his safety, that takes a lot of guts to do. In honor and respect, I give my best American military hand salute to him and say " God save the King."

Or did they? Sir Anthony Blunt was despatched to retrieve letters and artwork from Queen Victoria's grandchildren nobility in Germany in 1945. At least that was the official reason. Were there some letters from George 6th and the Palace quietly making overtones to what may happen in the (In 1940 very possible) occupation of Britain? Some letters or diaries that needed disposal of now that Germany had been defeated? Sir Anthony never left any written record, but his subsequent career and protection by the Palace would hint at something more than just an antiques retrieval visit to Germany. The Duke of Kent's odd death and the bizarre flight of Hess to Germany make more sense when seen alongside Sir Anthony Blunt's little foray on behalf of the Palace, and why he was forgiven his own treachery by Palace when it was unmasked later on.

Honestly I think that's why King Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward are so messed up. Controversial opinion, but I don't think the Queen liked being a mother and frankly was reported very distant to her children. This is shown in contrast to Princess Margaret (who despite being labelled the royal fuck up) she raised very normal well adjusted kids with even the case of Prince Andrew as well with his daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. Charles had issues with William and Harry that I wonder if the crown as a whole leads to disaster since the only good monarchs were never assumed to be monarch (Victoria, George V, George VI, and Elizabeth II) were all either distant claims or heir presumptive to the throne.

I feel like King George VI is a really overlooked king, though I am not British. He seems like he was pretty shy, but it makes sense if you know the history (his stammer + his role in succession). Imagine being thrust into the role of King-Emperor of the largest empire in the world AND having to deal with the worst conflict in human history while never even thinking you'd have any other role than being some random royal and really never feeling that comfortable speaking due to a stutter (and the stigma of that at the time, especially for a royal). And it was worse for Britain than WW1, when they were all alone until the US and the Soviets joined in against the Germans, most thought the war over at that point. He must've known if the invasion had succeeded at that point and they couldn't get on a boat or plane to either Canada or America fast enough (let alone if it would be possible to get out in that circumstance) that the Germans would probably have had their family either executed or turned into puppets for their regime, either fate horrible. Though I say that, but it does feel like the best kings and queens of British history were those who thought they'd never rule and were never "groomed" for it. Honestly, the more of the famous ones I think of, the more of them were never expected to rule. Henry the 7th who was a claimant from an obscure line who miraculously thx to his mother, some luck and good skills in combat managed to win the throne, the 8th (whose brother Arthur died unexpectedly), Queen Elizabeth the first, and even George V who was King-Emperor during WW1, who was also very shy, dignified and had very progressive views for the time when it came to the colonies, he was very appalled at how India was treated for example. All of them except for Henry the 8th turned out to be better than those groomed for the rule it seems, one has to wonder if Henry had gotten a son early on if he also would've turned out better.

I saw someone commenting how Monarchy can be alligned with Democracy. As someone living in Belgium, under an Constitutional Monarchy, i'm absolutely convinced that Democracy has to be supported by something like an Monarchy. When all positions with powers are electable, Democracy then shows its true weakness. For example. Hitler came to power thanks to a Republic with full Democracy. In an constitutional Monarchy the people elect an parliament which represent the ideological wish of the people. They form an gouverment which then can pass laws by both the support of the parliament aswell as the Monarch. The Monarch can't propose any new laws and thus have to rely on it's gouvernment. If any party would ever get an overall majority and would demand outrageous laws, the Monarch can deny them in protection of the realm and the people. Our past King, Koning Boudewijn, f.e. rejected to accept a law which would grant people the right to have such a thing as abortion, as he valued the life of an unborn child. But our King was also human and respected the constitution. Therefor he abdicated for 36hours so the elected parliament could vote if abortion should be allowed or not. I pity those who live in an absolute democracy and pray they got ruled by those who mean no harm. But when someone or an party got in office which has an secondary agenda, there is little hope but the strenght of an people to bring down the gouvernment; and as history have shown, this mostly occurs with loads of bloodshed.
