The Seekers Keith Potger reflects on the life and career of lead singer Judith Durham, who passed away on Friday at age 79.
Keith told Stan Shaw about Judith's special connection with each of the band members, and remembered her "dignity and style."
Seekers Keith Potger has paid tribute to his bandmate Judith Durham after she died at the age of 79 in Melbourne last week.
All members of the band were able to say their goodbyes to the Australian music icon, who was in palliative care following a long-standing lung disease.
Mr Potger told Liam Bartlett the band began with a meeting at a coffee shop.
“Judith became an executive assistant at the advertising agency that (fellow band member) Athol (Guy) was an account director at,” he said on 6PR Mornings.
“And Athol said to her ‘look, we’ve heard about you, why don’t you come along to the Treble Clef in South Yarra and have a bit of a sing with Bruce Woodley and Keith Potger and me, and see what you think’.
Australian musician Judith Durham, best known as the lead singer of folk music group The Seekers, has died aged 79.
Her band sold more than 50 million records and had hits including I'll Never Find Another You, I Am Australian and Georgy Girl.
She left the group to go solo in 1968 and went on to release a number of studio albums.
Anthony Albanese, Australia's prime minister, paid tribute to Durham, calling her "a national treasure".
Judith Durham gave voice to a new strand of our identity and helped blaze a trail for a new generation of Aussie artists," he wrote on social media. "Her kindness will be missed by many, the anthems she gave to our nation will never be forgotten."
Durham was honoured multiple times during her lengthy career, including being awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to music in 1995 and the Centenary Medal in 2003.
She was also named the Victorian of the Year in 2015.
Born in Melbourne, Durham rose to international fame after joining The Seekers in 1962 alongside Athol Guy, Keith Potger and Bruce Woodley. She became the band's lead singer the following year, aged 20.
A year after becoming joint recipients of the Australian of the Year award in 1967, the group officially disbanded, but reunited to perform on multiple occasions - the last time being 2014.
Durham married the British pianist and musical director Ron Edgeworth in 1969, who died less than 30 years later after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease.
Durham was born Judith Mavis Cock on 3 July 1943 in Essendon, Victoria, to William Alexander Cock DFC, a navigator and World War II pathfinder, and his wife, Hazel (née Durham).
From her birth until 1949, she lived on Mount Alexander Road, Essendon, and attended Essendon Primary School. She spent summer holidays at her family's weatherboard house (which since has been demolished) on the west side of Durham Place in Rosebud.
Her father accepted work in Hobart, Tasmania, in 1949. From early 1950, the family lived in Taroona, a suburb of Hobart, where Durham attended the Fahan School before moving back to Melbourne, residing in Georgian Court, Balwyn, in 1956. She was educated at Ruyton Girls' School Kew and then enrolled at RMIT.
Durham at first planned to be a pianist and gained the qualification of Associate in Music, Australia (AMusA), in classical piano at the University of Melbourne Conservatorium.
Rest in power Queen

It’s just so hard to lose someone so special who gave us so much joy… and not personally knowing these greatest entertainers is so strange because you feel like you know how close you feel regardless. I’m so grateful for all of these entertainers such as Judith or people like Lulu or John Lennon. Some have passed and some are still here but we have such a connection because they are part of our most personal moments and memories. America has been blessed with so much talent from Europe and I for one am so grateful.

I was 13 in 1965 when I probably first heard The Seekers. Essentially I was into the Beatles era including many other contemporary groups & individuals. I didn't know much English, didn't know where The Seekers were from (I am Swedish BTW) - understood nothing of the lyrics etc but the bottom line was that I just liked listening to them. Neither did I know what they looked like (Judith was just pretty and beautiful - what more can I say?). Now, after her passing I have enjoyed listening again to many of their hits - including later performances. Of course I feel the sadness and loss just like most others around the world who grew up with The Seekers as an integrated piece of the puzzle of ones' own life.

I was only ten in 1963, but always enjoyed hearing The Seekers from that time onward. My dad had a collection of old 78 rpm records he’d had from the 1950s, but the only 45 rpm records he ever bought were two by The Seekers, one of their singles, ‘Morningtown Ride’, and an EP of theirs with their other hits. My dad died in 1999, but I still have both of those records. The EP has a superb colour picture of them all. We have lost a superb voice and, it seems, a lovely person. The Seekers were a band with a unique sound and will be remembered for decades to come.

@@MrBirchmoor33 Quite a coincidences! No, as I mentioned the EP had a colour picture of the group sat around in a living room, with Keith and Bruce holding their guitars, Judith with a tambourine and Athol just sat without any instrument. The four tracks are A world of Our Own, Sinner Man, I’ll Never Find Another You & Open Up Them Pearly Gates. I’ve just been looking at a lot of their recordings on iTunes and their is one (All Bound for Morningtown) that has all of their EMI recordings 1964-68, which totals 113, including some live recordings. Not bad for £15.99, on a download of course.

Judith had a beautiful voice. I miss her truly and so sad that your Seekers will no longer have you with them in concert. I'm sure she wouldn't want you guys to be sad for her. RIP Judith 🙏❤️
