In this video Karin is shooting a couple of pictures at the local fair. She brought her Bronica ETRSi loaded with some Kodak Porta 160VC and some Fuji Pro400H to see how well these films perform under artificial light situations.

Absolutely love these images. The color palate of cooler blues and greens almost give it a cyberpunk look. Also the double exposure looks great.

Wow! Fantastic evening(s) of colour photography. So many great compositions. It must have felt like you had opened a Pandora's Box of goodies. So satisfying to go out and shoot several rolls and come back with so many winners. The coloured fog creates an ethereal atmosphere which the film picks up beautifully. I liked all of these shots but if I had to pick out three it would be 0.27, 4.26 and 7.23. BTW I thought the waist level finder was particularly useful for this type of night time photography.
@KarinMajoka

Thanks a lot for your comment, I truly appreciate it! I am also glad I came back a second time because the wet ground added another interesting element. I am always a bit worried to make mistakes when shooting long exposures on film, but it's also so rewarding to see when everything works out. And I totally agree that the waist level finder is such a plus when shooting situations like this one. ⚡️

I was impressed with even your multi-exposure by mistake photo. The Fuji 400h’s purple hue works well with night shooting. As of now, I don’t think that I’ll have a chance to ever experience working without h it , since Fuji has disconnected this production. As far as your next time visiting the fair, I do think you’d be pleased with the results of using an ND filter; that’s if you are able to keep butt-heads from disturbing your tripod set-up.

Last time I went on any sort of fast rides at a fair, my girlfriend at the time and a mutual friend of ours, who came out with us, had to literally carry me around to the back of proceedings because I suffered delayed concussion. Around 2-3 weeks prior to the show, I'd been in a trucking accident where both myself and my brother were lucky to get out of it. Silly me, thinking I felt OK decided to go on the ride with my girlfriend and I was OK going forwards, but when I went backwards everything started to go all weird. When I got off the ride, my legs gave way from out under me and I lost feeling in them!!! My head was spinning and I felt like throwing up!!! So, my girlfriend and our friend carried me around to the medical office at the back of the main ring and they looked me over. I stayed in there for about 30 minutes until everything settled down. Needless to say, I saw the doc the next day and had a head Xray (this was before MRI machines were common) and found out it was delayed concussion. I ended up not doing much of anything for a few more weeks before everything was cleared and I was OK.

Thank you, this was also one of my favourite shots! ⚡️ The negatives look alright in density and not really overexposed but I think the overexposed look came due to scanning, so you are right in a way. Even though I noticed that the images might be a bit too bright compared to how I saw it, I kind of liked this look and did not bother to scan them again. Ich hab auch noch das 50mm 1.8 von Sony und das Samyang 35mm 2.8, welche ich früher mal zum fotografieren genutzt habe, die aber mittlerweile echt selten zum Zug kommen. Thanks a lot for your comment, Richard! Home developed and scanned. I am trying to get into a new scanning workflow and tried Vuescan for the first time. Not sure how I feel about it so far, so I might do some rescanning and experimenting in the future. :)

@KarinMajoka

I metered using my Calumet DFM3 external light meter or the lightmeter on my phone. However, I added some extra time to account for reciprocity failure (there are charts of the different film stocks and the effect of reciprocity failure online).

I don't believe that 'jelly fish on acid' was an accident, its too perfectly framed! You should have said.... 'And here I wanted to represent the kaleidoscope of light and movement and capture the emotional atmosphere of the fun fair".......or something like that, and never admitted it was an 'accident'.
@KarinMajoka

Hahah, you caught me, I am not good at selling myself, that sound sooo much better than an accident ⚡️✌🏼 I think if I only made a multiple exposure of the carousel I would have been pretty happy with it, but I find the different background from another scenery a bit distracting.
@Revup1
@Revup1 3 года назад
@@KarinMajoka Ah, there's always photoshop, who'd know? I think the background is quite interesting though, the main subject grabs your attention but the background keeps you occupied guessing whats there. I also like the carousel at 4.23 for its colours and movement.

I use incident metering, so somehow neither nor. But when I do reflective metering I meter for the midtones. Hope this helps. :)

For the most part I used my external Calumet light meter and did incident metering on the midtones. But sometimes I am also lazy and use a lightmeter on my phone.

I think you should stop worrying about people. For the next time you go there do longer exposure but people always give it a plus in fact you missed moments like a couple was behind you kissing when they were in some of the attractions. Probably is a way to photograph you have and it can be an extention of you but at the end those places are there for people I think you should include them. That is just a suggestion do what you think it works for you. I enjoyed the video.
@KarinMajoka
@KarinMajoka 3 года назад
Thanks so much for your elaborate comment, I think input like this is very valuable! I noticed some moments I „missed“ that I would usually photograph when I was in a street photography scenario, but this setup of slow film and darkness did not really allow me to shot quickly in scenes like these. And I totally agree that a place like this fair is made for people and the absence of people would not represent what it was made for. And I would not like to exclude people from the images completely, but make them more blurry and abstract through longer exposures. Sometimes I don’t like when images are too plain or too obvious but prefer the more abstract attempt. Also: I would love to show that it’s not about the people that stand right in front of the attractions at that moment of time, but about the amount of different people that visit a place like this during one day. And I think this would be better represented with an indication of people by making them appear more blurry rather than concrete, but I think it’s a question of taste and definitely worth experimenting with! :) thanks! ⚡️
