Wow. Never seen a cable operated funicular like this before. The UK has the historic Great Orme cable tramway which I guess works on a similar system . 👍
Pretty much identical to the upper half of the Gt. Orme tram from the engineering standpoint. ⚙️ If only we could afford similar terrain to that which the French get to enjoy. Say what you like about all of its benefits, my part of the UK has a serious flatness problem! 😋
This is a fine example of a cable train. What always had me puzzled is how the cable can follow the up's and down's of the track. It is easy to see in the curves and on the top of the curve the cable naturally has to follow the pulley's, but what force is keeping the cable over the pulley's in the *low* part of the curve? Can someone explain, or give a link?
In fact, it is the cable's own weight that keeps it glued to the pulleys despite the curve. This curve passing from the 0% to the 39% slope is more gradual than the arrow of the cable, and therefore it remains stuck to the track. It's the same curve that can be seen on the aerial cable cars between 2 pylons.

@@paulkennedy8701 chamagical’s point doesn’t need downgoing parts. If you have a 45 degree slope, then a bit of 20, and then 45 again, then the cable would tend to go airborne on the 20 degree slope. But perhaps the weight keeps it down as Transports cables says.

Under the driver's seat the wheels on this (left side) of the unit have a dual flange (both sides of wheel like a mono rail's U shaped wheel) thus the unit we are in - will ALWAYS go to this side of the passing loop. never going to the other side. The other unit we saw coming down on the RH side of the passing loop - always uses that side, never this side. That way - instead of having to have switch gear as well as some way of avoiding a wheel flange, cutting the haul-cables, the only wheels with a flange, have a double flange - and ONLY use the outside rail Inside wheels are a LOT wider, with no flange (ensuring that they never need to be "switched" or to use frogs either, but simply roll along on the top of everything. It's highly efficient for a there & back using the same passing part of the midway loop - yet is a completely unsuitable design for a normal railway system. Hence why - whenever one unit goes UP, the other must come down (to both meet & pass each other in this fashion) & visa versa. IF however, that cable should break - or if they need both units down at the bottom, this unit will still use, this LH side of that passing loop.

In case of problem, he can stop the ride at any moment. For the stops in both intermediate stations, he open/close the plate-form access (there are not fully securised). And in case of big problem, he organize the evacuation of each cabin.
