It’s so surreal Sony Pictures acquired FUNimation in 2016 and then in 2020 they acquired Crunchyroll, which eventually resulted in FUNimation being absorbed into Crunchyroll and Crunchyroll phasing out FUNimation after shutting down the streaming service in April of 2024 (this year).

FUNimation used to be on top of the world when it came to anime.

The interview with Ben Diskin happened a few years ago, and he's always been more of an LA-based voice actor.

I used to really want funimation channel as a kid, and I remember when they used to have free anime episodes on demand every couple of weeks. It’s also wild that crunchy roll has a Chuck E. Cheese movie but not dubs of classics like g gundam.

Funimation became modern day Crunchyroll, most of the former Funimation staff still work at Crunchyroll Dubs. It is the original Crunchyroll that used to be something else entirely that are no longer around. Also when Gen Fukunaga left Funimation after SONY Pictures brought the entire control of the company that was a few years transitioning process, the masks fell off and we got to see who at Funimation really cared about Anime and the Fans, compared to others who just wanted to use their time at Funimation to make portfolios for Hollywood.

As a Latin American anime fan, I have a complicated relationship towards Funimation. For many years they had blocked tons of licenses in the region, since they acquired the rights for all of America, but they didn't have a presence in Latin America until 2020, so thanks to them we missed many shows. When they finally entered into the Latin American market the service was only available in a few select countries and the first show they decided to dub into Latin American Spanish, My Hero Academia, was a complete disaster of a dub, since they decided to sent the show to be dubbed to Miami, where there aren't enough voice actors to dub an anime with some many characters. After the disaster that was MHA's dub they quickly course corrected, they still kept dubbing MHA in Miami, but their next shows were dubbed in Mexico and thanks to them we some some excellent dubs for series such as Kaguya-sama, Fire Force and Fruits Basket, just to name a few. They also dubbed some old anime that were once blocked by them in our region, like The Future Diary, Spice and Wolf, Black Butler, Soult Eater and they even re-dubbed some old anime like Cowboy Bebop and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, this last one really needed a re-dub, but fortunately they managed to bring back Ed and Al's original voice actors Sadly, ever since Crunchyroll took control after they were acquired by Sony, Funimation disappeared quickly and they abandoned the practice of dubbing older anime, which is a shame since it was rumored that shows like A Certain Scientific Railgun, Haruhi Suzumiy, Code Geass and Gurren Lagann were going receive Neutral Spanish and Portuguese dubs by Funimation, but they were shelved or canceled. At least nowadays we have an exclusive anime streaming service in Latin America, called Anime Onegai, that is dubbing old anime that were never released in our region, as well as new series

I remember watching a lot of Funimation anime during my teen years such as Soul Eater, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, Casshern Sins, Space Dandy, Black Butler, Tower of Druuga, Romeo x Juliet, Summer Wars and Attack on Titan. I really didn’t care about the whole Vic drama thing since that was a pointless feud both sides were in the wrong. It’s a shame that Funimation is now Crunchy Roll, but I’m sure Crunchy Roll will live on for a while.

FUNimation should have worked as an independent dubbing company. Being brought another company they originally competed against only to be forgotten was one mistake I can think of and gravely regretted so.

I remember when Colours TV had a block on Funimation content as it was my first exposure to non toyetic anime back then. I loved this video you did on Funimation given how it had a history and it then got consumed by Crunchyroll being a monopolizer of the anime industry.

While I respect Funimation for making Dragon Ball, YuYu Hakusho and other Anime’s popular and legally available; I do not miss them in the slightest. Then getting caught in controversy after controversy made me loose my respect for them overall, So I didn’t really memorialize them at all. Being merged with Crunchyroll (Who is just as bad if not worse than Funi) was just the icing on the cake. I surely don’t like that Crunchymation is trying to monopolize the US Anime market, Competition is a good thing and allows people to choose who they want to buy/stream their anime from. Them Killing Right Stuf Anime and turning it into CR Store was the worst thing they have ever done; CR Store has Terrible customer Service which I am convinced is run by an AI and not any real person, and their shipping is the absolute worst.

Useless fact: Owari No Serpah was own by Funimation making this boring forgotten anime unwatchable after Crunchyroll aquisition.

I like the dubs of db,dbz,dbgt,Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 fairy tail,yu yu hakusho and others. I don't like the fact they canceled dbz ultimate uncut edition.

The fact an anime dubbing company produced a Chuck E Cheese movie is hilarious to me and this comes from a CEC fan. I think Chuck E Cheese In The Galaxy 5000 would be more interesting if they had used the original Pizza Time Theatre Chuck E, his sarcastic quips would make the movie incredibly hilarious! Back to animation studios, while I've already suggested Will Vinton Studios, another company that had a sad and unfair ending is Cosgrove Hall. They made a ton of classic British cartoons like Danger Mouse, Count Duckula, The Wind In The Willows, and Engie Benjy, but the 2000s were not kind to them and ITV shut the studio down for being "unprofitable". I should mention that despite the popularity of Engie Benjy, there was hardly any merch and there was no effort to bring the show to America like Thomas and Bob The Builder, which may have possibly played a role in Cosgrove Hall's downfall.

Once Gen Fukunaga sold Funi for a third time and to Sony this time, I was like, this is the end of Funi as we know it. Once I heard that they merged with Crunchyroll, it was all over, so many shows that were on Funi aren't even on Crunchyroll, like seriously, they owe the rights, but pivot and not put them on there.

You think his accusers would want this to go take this to court to provide proof instead of wanting the whole thing dismissed. i love Funimation, i don't like Crunchyroll I remember the Funimation TV Channal on my dad's rich people's Cable Service. i been watching anime for years but only Toonami and 4KIDS. SO the Funimation Channal plus the leap in popularity of the internet 2007 or 2008 this is how i discovered most of my anime. Ouran Host Club, Black Buttler, Tsukuyomi Moon Phase, Casshin Sin, XXXHoiic, Tsubasa chronicles and Negima ALSO MNET was one of my dad's special channels I really into Korean POP music

What makes matters worse is that Jamie Marchi, a voice actress I used to be a fan of, continues to pull a “Never My Fault” when she is called out for whenever she and other people at Funimation continue to add their political beliefs or whatnot to their scripts for what they translate.

I used to respect Funimation and what they did bringing more attention to Anime in America. But in recent years their current practices and controversies they were a part, specifically with their VAs, has made me lose some respect for them. It's why I wasn't completely sad when they were bought uo and dismantle by Crunchyroll. That isn't to say I don't have more own problems with that service itself, but it really highlights how Funimation went out with a whimper.

Small edit ! I thought it was Sentai Filmworks funi got into a legal lawsuit with, cuz Adv films was mostly gone at around 2012 ? Yes sentai counter sued them cuz they don’t have a contract with them nor work with them for home media distribution ( section 23 films and WB ) 4kids got into legal issues cuz they might have not paid their Japanese parents their fees in the yugioh marketing advertising and stuff via the DVDs, tcg and brief uncut DVDs before they eventually went bankrupt, sold it back to Konami and no they didn’t resume dubbing for the GX 5Ds last seasons lol left subbed on Crunchyroll afterwards 😅😅😅

I love FUNImation I really do but the way they treated Vic Mignonga like how WWE did with CM Punk back in 2014 and AEW Last Year because of that dickweed Tony Khan and Crybaby Man Child Jungle Boy Jack Perry was just asinine and stupid it's a shame how they went from so many buyouts and mergers and Sony snatched them as it got absorbed into Crunchyroll basically most of their exclusives on their app are wiped off but what's strange is that Yu Yu Hakusho dub is on Netflix despite Funimation owning it prior to the Crunchyroll merger.

I turned my back on Funimation after the whole Vic scandal. If they could so viciously turn on one of their own before a verdict was reached from mere hearsay, then I refuse to support such toxic two faced people.

Especially for Vegeta's voice, the "Ocean Dub" was the best for DBZ. I can't listen to the "Remastered Dub" or "Kai Dub".
