Tommy's first solo record 'Teaser' is the greatest lost gem of the 70's. the 25 track 'Ultimate Teaser' is phenomenal. Remastered the guitar sounds and playing are insane! The songs are great and so is the singing. The guy was a major talent they tried to retrofit into a couple bands that were gasping for one last breath but you can really hear what the world lost on Teaser. A killer singer songwriter and player that was just hitting his creative stride.
I agree the album is great but it seemed not many people know it exists. And I was very disappointed in Private Eyes, the songs weren't nearly as good to my ears.
Love watching Tommy play. His rhythm and chord playing is just as sophisticated as his solo playing and the use of the echoplex. He did a great job with Deep Purple
Very cool and funky! Love seeing Tommy in his shiny silky outfit wearing his scarf too. He had fantastic fashion style to match his fabulous guitar playing, of course! :) He must have had a blast playing with the James Gang!
don't forget the GREAT playing Tommy did on Alphonse Mouzon's ' mind transplant' album ..after he did the 'spectrum' sessions with Cobham.. any guitarist that could influence Jeff Beck ,,,Beck said it was Tommy's playing that inspired him to do 'blow by blow' and 'wired' Beck opened his shows in 06 with 'stratus' ...I saw Govt, Mule last summer and Warren Haynes also played 'stratus'..... Tommys playing is timeless !! I always loved to play 'Teaser" and 'Wild dogs' with my band.... hear em howl !! fuckers !!
Tommy Bolin, a good friend, had to pull all of the energy for the group. He said that the others in the band, for the most part could have been reading a book. (Tommy's words). He hated commercial music, but we all gotta make a living. Tommy's best work, IMO, was on his own stuff. Like it or not, it was his efforts and vision of something he never got to fulfill. He was a fantastic guitarist and had he lived, it is hard telling what he could have achieved. Enjoy what he did, and if you don't, move on. RIP, my friend and see you soon in the big jam in the sky.........
Dale Peterson You are one of my fav bass player and Tommy was simply a genius as songwriter/vocalist/co-producer and guitarist. "From the archives vol. 1" and "wishper and roses vol. 1" show what I'm saying. The most underrated guitar player in history and surely one of the best (so better than Walsh imo).
Dale Peterson I got almost everything you can get hold on from "The archives". I´ve been addicted to Tommy Bolin since 1982 and I still think he was/is The Ultimate. Met both Billy Cobham and Glenn Hughes in Stockholm long time ago and we talked about Tommy and his music all night. RIP Tommy and all the other beautiful souls at the big jam in the sky........
I owe this exact James Gang lineup in a weird way. They were opening for Edgar Winter in 1974, and I was 15 at my very first rock concert. I was not even old enough to drive there so my parents took us. The house lights went down, the pot smoke filled the auditorium and Tommy Bolin came out strutting around in a glittery shirt that said "Eat a Flamingo." I was amazed at this spectacle and hooked immediately. I damn sure had never seen anything like that. I had to do that! Got a bass guitar and amp for Christmas, worked hard and had a pretty good run in some bands over the years. It was fun.
so you might have an opinion on the bass cabs used here. I had that type for low-end PA cabs, but they're so boomy. It's amazing how far sound replication has come. Our local amphitheater, in the old days, if you were on the lawn you had to tolerate poor sound. Now it doesn't matter where you are, it's all good.
the two james gang alblums with tommy bolin ..... "bang". and one more called "miami" are awesome! i just wish there were more videos showing tommy playing !
@@MegzeeR hey your right I have both. I just wish he hadn't joined Deep Purple I remember being annoyed when announced his style was all wrong. But let's hope his journey was a Happy one before he left us all too soon.
Not only was he a Great Rock & Roll guitar player but equally great on the 1973 'Stratus' Album with Billy Cobham. Listen to his master control slide work on this piece. When all the Great bands needed help they called Tommy! Too bad he died so young and so GREAT!!
AWESOME that so much music history, Like This! ... that might have been lost to time, is available to such a large part of global society. These guys shamelessly put it all out there, and inspired and motivated a generation of performers... and in turn still do. RESPECT
i need to send an R.I.P., as the bassist of our band of 30+ yrs, also named David Hogerty, passed away from overdose in 2004. A great Musician, and even better Person. He has, and will always be missed. None of the remaining member have played together since, but remain friends. After that long, it didn't feel right to press on with the group. Thanks for the space to Salute this song, Tommy Bolin, and my Dear Friend.
The frontmans got a kind of Bride of Frankenstein meets Davey Crockett vibe goin on. Perfectly in sync for that time of "black lights", 8 tracks, lava lamps, vinyl LPs and "Don Kirshners Rock Concert" that you and your friends are gonna watch while you "smoke up" that quarter ounce of crappy homegrown your sister's boyfriend swore up and down was "Thai Stick." heh heh
This line-up did actually do some good stuff... Miami LP was one of my vivid childhood memories of record day at the daycare! Rock on that "Close N Play" turntable.
how did these guys get a deal and Tommy couldn't with his own band? a tragedy doubled. Tommy was the Rocky Mountain High in Colorado, the whole place loves him so much.
I was in my middle teens in the mid 70s. Just starting going to concerts. I seem to kinda remembering seeing the JG open for someone but I'm not sure ( it was the 70s. What can I say ) but I don't remember listening to the JG with this line up. To me Joe Walsh IS the JG. He's the one I heard back then. Hell I always thought he was an original member. I think with him they sound so much better.
not sure if you guys gives a shit but if you are stoned like me during the covid times you can stream all of the latest movies on InstaFlixxer. I've been watching with my brother for the last days :)
Rear loaded 18inch speaker....plenty of bottom but not easy to hear on stage. The sound goes right past you but sounds great about 30 feet in front of you.
+Mozart FX i love Tommy Bolin and this album with the James Gang was great. But you put into words everything I always thought when I saw this singer. I am still laughing.
+Mozart FX Before I even read any comments I was gonna post "This singer 'generates excitement' the same way a toy poodle 'generates fear."' But I changed my mind so now I won't.
Great Tune, Tommy a great player, not trying to copy joe adding his own style, like it or not Tommy Was and always will be a great player. If you want to complain about something then your not looking in the right place here..
Tonight, the James Gang cover band called James Gang. Sounds about like most bar band renditions of the song apart from the fact that most bar bands play it in the right key.
Been a Tommy Bolin fan since Teaser and Private Eyes came out.. this venture just wasn’t destined to go anywhere. James Gang without Joe Walsh just wasn’t gonna happen.
Hi, Tommy played on the album Spectrum where the song is Red Baron. This reminded me of the European Red Baron Band. The band was formed in 1993 in the Czech Republic and was named after a song by Billy Cobham. influenced by 70's hard rock - prog, blues rock, art rock, psychedelic, folk rock. They recorded four studio albums and one, live. A new studio album Last Chance is due to be released this year. Bruce Grafsgard Joe Walsh was a friend and fan of Tommy Bolin's, he recommended Tommy for the spot in the James Gang when he left. Joe Walsh was even a Paul Bearer at Tommy's funeral. The two albums Bolin did with the James Gang, Bang and Miami are classics!
Keith, as you can see by the audience reaction, it worked just fine. This was a different band than the Walsh lineup, and was far superior to the previous one with Dominic.
Ya, would love to say something nice about that clip but I don't bs people. Creepy and forced. Seen all the enthusiasts comments and wasn't going to rile them up this morning. Gotta pick your battles. That singers spastic movements Eeeek!
This guy... well, if it were his own group with his own music, maybe he'd stand out as a little more remarkable. But how do you hire a frontman for the James Gang that can't cover Joe Walsh's range? This could have been a much better band if they called themselves something different and played original music. They certainly have the chops, but the James Gang they ain't.
@@dcs002 Man, this was a pretty poor performance by Roy Kenner. And I like his vocals. He played in a band called Bush (from the 70's) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gq_f9hWTTGg.html and his vocals were pretty damn good. Seems like he wasn't putting his all into this and also was kind of buried in the mix a bit.. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kLy63Pq1rUw.html Roy Kenner on a better day! I've been kind of amused at some of these comments lol. You younger people got to realize that's what people looked like in the fking 70's man lol!!! He coulda sang better on this tho.. As much as I think Tommy Bolin is one of the best, he coulda done better on this performance too...
Kelly S I find the comparison to be quite apt. I understand that this singer is trying to make a living. But he's pressing here. Looks like a goof..... ....Like Cherone. Gary was a hammy (either by his own intention, the band's intention, or management's intention) stand in that was quickly shown the door for good reason.
thanks man...First got into Bolin around 72..around Cobhams Spectrum period..Apart from Zappa,McLaughlin and Jan Akkerman,Tommy just blew me away.Always Loved Teaser on its release.great album. However he should never have joined Purple. He was just too good.period..RIP MR BOLIN
There were a few non-Joe Walsh James Gang albums. Not the sound we were expecting. Tommy joined Deep Purple after this then died just 2 years later. OD.
Yes it is! Wow someone else knows about Roy Kenner? He was vocalist on a old 70's album i bought, by a early 70's band called Bush. Not the 90's band nope. He sure looks 70's freaky here on this vid, but his vocals are excellent lol.. (No he's not Joe Wash, so any comments about that? Fuck Off.) Dennis 56 years.. ATX
This brought back memories of how much of the 1970's glam rock sucked. Bolin had some good moments but this is not one of them. James Gang was Joe Walsh, The End.
What an odd thing to say. The James Gang was never glam rock and plenty of glam rock was great. This performance is not great, obviously. Bolin had tons of GREAT moments.
Bolin's guitar kix ass on this version here ... the vocals are what makes it a lame version, not Roy Kenner's best effort and the backing vocal is super weak .... of course no one replaces Joe, even two couldn't do the trick. But Joe is in Hendrix's, Clapton or Alvin Lee's league . Tommy is particularly good with the rhythm/lead on this cut
I agree! No one replaces Joe! Look at what rock levels Joe Walsh took the Eagles. He is The Man! Look at some recent Joe Walsh live performances with his Analog Man album. He still still has it at 64 years old.
Yeah Bowie, NY Dolls, Elton John, Lou Reed, Dictators, Stooges, T Rex, Thin Lizzy and Tommy Bolin all suck. Obviously, Joe Walsh was the only guy in the 70s that had ambitions. The rest, well they were all GLAM ROCK, a term some critic dreamed up after a long day at the office. Your hair is long son and your beard is full but behind those glasses is a fake assed YIPPIE.
