I think most of my misplaced blue devils hate is from lack of understanding, so thank you for breaking it down for me! It makes me understand how much work is put in to something like this. Like the library is there, all I got to do is read.
So I'm actually blind and this is the only real way I get any idea of what's happening with the visuals. Y'all are so good at commentary and I can not tell you how much I appreciate it. Thank you so much.
I think the reason why BD using the Incident in Jazz piece is because it fits the theme really well, it's the cut-outs from past show that they wanna bring to this show
And to be fair, they had other shows where they used their previous repertoire again like with their 2012 show, for example, used repertoire from their 1996 show
As a former DCM visual judge, I think your commentary and analysis is spot-on - it’s okay to have a favorite corps and still root for the rest of them to excel!
I saw BD live in Annapolis 10 days prior to Prelims and was blown away by just how comprehensively good the show was. IMO they deserved to win and the 1+ point margins of victory the last 2 nights significantly bolster my opinion .... While the season-long captions headline story was about the Cavies percussion, the actual most dominant section during Finals week was BD's color guard. In a corps with brilliance aplenty, the guard was the most brilliant of all!
I'm not a Blue Devils fan but this show definitely deserved the win this year. It was so clean and difficult and you could tell how hard the members worked. You guys forgot to mention the uniform change! They put on some cool coats after the ballad.
for once they actually put them on instead of being like last year where they wore them for like 2 seconds at the beginning (the tempus uni's looked better with the jackets on imo)
I would love some content that goes into how BD does drill without dot books. What is the learning process like? Do the drill designers have idea on day 1 where the props are and what the shapes will be? Do they know roughly how big the forms will be? Does the whole group learn drill together (drums, guard, winds)? There are alot of moving pieces to put something on the field like this and I am curious what the spring training process is like and how it differs from a dot based group. Also would like to know if there are differences later in the season when it comes to cleaning and making changes.
I had said from the beginning of this DCI season that this was going to be the show to beat, and it proved correct! In my opinion this was one of my Top 3 BD shows! This BD show was reminiscent of their signature sound from the 80's (when I first fell in love with them), so for once I really wanted them to pull it off (and I'm a Crown fan)!
Not usually a fan of Devils shows but this one from the start of the season to the end was one I thoroughly enjoyed! Hope they do more entertaining shows like this for years to come!
I absolutely love watching you guys geek out over the show. I know there's a different level for you guys due to the fact you are alums, but at the end of the day, we are all drum corps fans, and game recognizes game. Great stuff. Great show, and man, I notice new stuff in the guard every time I watch this show, and I watched it all year long. Amazing. For a fun little bit check out the hater couple at 10:00. Arms crossed, right in the middle of the screen. You can kind of see them purposefully not enjoying this show a couple of other times. I remember at time long ago when I let my own biases keep me from enjoying great shows, I only hope they see the light some day...
The staging thing is so true, during my schools indoor season last year we did staging instead of dots like the previous year it just looked a lot cleaner.
And I agree that a 4-peat is very hard....by the time you get to that 4th year, other orgs have figured out what you're doing and have now met your standard. I'm hoping for Boston, personally.
There's a good reason why BD gets their championships. And there's a good reason why they have become from my most hated corps, to one of my most favorite. Their programs are compelling. I remember watching Cabaret Voltaire and Felliniesque, and it got me curious as to what the show concept was. From that moment, my knowledge about literature, arts, etc. expanded. Combine those with consistently great music, visuals, and staffs, everything is just set up for success
I haven’t seen the blue devil show a shower till this and it was amazing. I really think coming up in the next couple years specially, with the blue coats as well they’re gonna get more inspiration from EDM. I’ve already seen it like when I first listen to the blue coat show it was like almost word for word EDM I think done in intelligent manner would be very interesting. If it’s done class, it would be amazing.
This show was SO much easier to follow than Tempus Blue. 2022 required me to sit down for a 2 hour research session to fully get the ideas being presented. This year, it was a single web-page with the ideas presented. Super effective, super simple. I got the show as soon as they had it on the field. Imo, Tempus Blue was far more abstract than this show, but I feel this show was better overall. Congrats on #21!!!
I watched them live all three nights in Indy and they were brilliant, but I'm seeing stuff here that I never noticed. Yes their feet are absolutely incredible and this might be the best guard I've ever seen!
I was very lucky to have one of the field judges on finals night come to my high school to help us with our show along with our jazz band and I got the chance to ask him what it was that separated BD from other corps in the top 4. One of the things he said that you haven’t mentioned was that BD’s show had a growth to it as it moved. For example, I asked why Boston Crusaders were 4th and he gave the example that unlike BD their show had the sound die down, and they reached their maximum sound way earlier than BD did. While BD grew as time went on, Boston committed to their show content too much. after rewatching the cutouts I can actually see that even when playing the first big moment of the show, BD feels like they’re holding back knowing that they need to save their loudest moment for the end of the show.

my favorite part is the incident in jazz section, its a cut out from a previous year, and the peoce fits so well with what you guys said the theme is. a deteriorating artist. the music itself is challenging and starts getting more complex and more "deteriorated." i personally think their choice of incident in jazz was absolutely perfect.
Have you done a video about the commitments that any DCI member needs to make to be in a top corps on your channel yet? I’m a dad of aspiring guard members who I think might one day be good enough, but I wanna know what they are getting into, both practice schedule wise and financially. Don’t know if that’s supposed to be kept secret, but nothings free these days….
I appreciate your reaction and mostly concur. Long time BD fan. This season I saw them first rehearse in WY prior to the CO show and, having done the same across the past many years, I thought they were far ahead of where they usually are for that point in the season in terms of cleanliness and execution. Lo and behold they were beating other corps by 1-2 points during that stretch of the season. Incredible! The part I profoundly disagree with is the percussion scores for the back half of the season. All the sudden Cavies came out of nowhere and just started annihilating the drum caption. Were they clean? Yes! Was their book interesting or difficult. Mostly NO. BD and Boston's book was profoundly more difficult. For the folks that are like "clean wins the day", I ask what is any group's incentive to achieve more? Why not park on the 50 and play Tone Loc songs (bang the back beat to lame ass music)? Not saying the Cavies did this. I appreciate the fact they mostly avoided featuring more modern components (drum set, guitar, etc.) in their show and had a clean, loud brass line...BUT the drumline seriously only had one cool moment in their show ("the claw"), which really, by today's standards is pretty boring compared to what the other competitive groups are doing. I was at Finals, scarcely behind Everett, and most all the lines were clean. Differentiating factor was BD's book was exponentially more difficult than the others and pretty much equally clean. Only rough spot of the BD show was the tuba solo. That should have been either cut or watered. Even my mom, scarcely a musician, at the CO show commented on how that portion of the show was rough and it basically didn't get much better. Regarding what's next...my friends who go to Finals with me are not BD fans. They have no concept of the activity in terms of its history and think BD is "traditional" (pretty laughable characterization!), but to the point of thinking they've been very similar since 2019 (since we started attending Finals) isn't far off. On one hand you think - "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". On the other hand, it's not unreasonable to wonder how they're pushing the activity forward by consistently doing more of "the same". Now don't get me wrong, I don't think their shows are the same. For me 2023 was a high point for their recent years, but you guys get what I'm saying.
i enjoyed this show more than 2022. agreed with all the scores except crown winning brass. could’ve been the way they sounded at finals wasn’t their best but that was the only time i watched them.
I'd love to see you go really old-school for a BD show that never seems to get any love from the org....1984 (full disclosure, that was the year I was in the corps!). The camera work is crap, but Garfield had to bring it's A game to beat us that night. Be happy to help you out with it.

@@mauricefrontz8570 93 had to be a major bitch to count on the march....I think Don Ellis was allergic to 4/4 time! Thanks for the 84 props....it was a fun show....and a VERY steep learning curve for me, given that BD was my first corps and my marching bands did NOT march corps style.
I am not the biggest BD fan mostly because I like to root for the underdog (ref. Phantom Regiment 2008). But this show’s design was exceptional and the execution was exquisite. I know your loyalties will always be with BD and that’s as it should be - but I also hope there’s a drum corps next year that you’ll be able to support as worthy competition. Thanks for this one guys. It’s refreshing to watch you watch the way I do - in awe of what they achieved.
It wasn’t my “favorite” show. But there was no denying how great the show is. There was no beating it. From the moment I first saw it I knew it’s a fight for second this year.

Could you do a reacts video for Blue Devils C-fari (BDC 2023 show)? They work their butts off even though they know they will come in last place every single show. 2023 SoCal Classic they got their highest score ever; 59.95.... still last place. Their youngest member was 8 years old! They would LOVE a shoutout. Thanx!
I ranted about BD in general on another video so i'm gonna tone it down here lol. BD2023 was the cleanest show of the season there's no doubt about that, the execution of the brass on the field when it came to marching was frankly shocking with how clean it was, everything always locked in perfectly and just the way they moved in general, those shapes etc, really all of it was practically flawless. The guard, well, BD guard in a nutshell, the craziest people out there, there's nothing much to say, BD guard is on another level. About the visuals themselves, BD had the cleanest run, the eexecution was on point, but I must say I still prefer Crown overall, especially with the brass, the spread of Crown's brass is miles ahead of BD for me, but didn't always look as clean as BD was. However, I can understand how it also is difficult to play with the such a dense amount of people around you as well, and BD in that aspect always looked flawless. Musically speaking, with some introspection I think BD's music style isn't really for me, as I said on another vid. The Beat my Heart skipped and Metamorph were probably one offs. I do have to say though that the opening and closer of the show sound really damn good. The ballad I found cheesy asf ngl, and I wasn't a fan of the screamer trumpet, that trombone on the other hand though was amazing. Loved the pit book as a whole, that's one thing that I really like about BD. About the concept itself, I like it, and watching the video linked in description helped me understand a bit why they chose to use De Gaulle's speech from June 18th 1940, but I still don't really like the usage of it during the drumline feature. Sorry for yet another lenghty comment lol, aprreciated the video a lot
There’s also Japanese anime music and a wide variety of other tunes! The show is meant to be more of an interpretation of Matisse’s life path rather than a period accurate telling of his background.
Knew nothing about mattise (sp?). Show made no sense at all. Couldn’t even tell you what the opening sample was saying. Watched the mid season Report and then it all clicked. Regardless of getting it or not I still dug the hell out of it.
I still feel the same after this, beautiful executed and performed to perfection, GOATed soloists. But it didn’t do it to me in the heart like some of the others. However, this is the BEST series please keep it up!
So people around me always get so offended when bluedevils when like i guess it’s cus i’m just a fan of core but i don’t care who wins i love just core i have a favorite (it’s phantom) i just don’t care 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
I can appreciate the fact that BD has their show design concept-but at what point do they just do something else? I realize every show is unique but Bluecoats have taken over the innovator position in DCI. Is BD really okay with winning and doing the same basic idea over and over again?
I wouldn't say it is the same basic idea because the theme and new ideas in the show are there but more so similar formula or structure to the shows and tbh the designers have been there for around 20 years almost so like we will just have to see. Some are possibly going to retire soon but there are younger staff members that are there so we might see new things in the future down the line.
Ask the members who put their blood, sweat and tears into perfecting their show while putting their "real world" lives on hold for 3 months only to have a WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP to show for it if they're okay with "winning"
To be clear this isn’t a question for the marching members, and there’s no wrong answer. I would suggest that BD wins because they are better designers and teachers, and they can attract the most experienced and talented members because of their tradition of winning. They would likely win regardless of the show concept.
Criticism, with a BUT. Read to the end. I haven’t been a fan of BD’s shows the last 15 years. Clean and well performed, yes. But formulaic and boring-the same show formula but with different music-boring, easy to clean box and scatter drill, highly segmented music, and no leap-out-of-my-seat moments. How they’ve won GE at all is beyond me. BUT, since coming out of the pandemic BD seems to have done some soul-searching and gotten back to the roots of what great drum corps is all about. While the formulaic element is still there, their 2022 and 2023 shows had more curvilinear drill and less scatter-which was sorely needed-and more emotional moments than in the past decade. Beautiful choreography. As amazing as BD’s brass always is they’ve stepped up to a new level since 2022. Percussion was awesome as always. And the 2023 guard was spectacular. Very special year for the guard. While I think BD has won more titles and had more top 3 placements than they should have since 2007, their 2023 win was well deserved. Their show, while still formulaic, felt more organic than past years, and they performed it brilliantly. And I loved they brought back Incident in Jazz-it fit well with the show. I know themes and stories are all the rage in drum corps anymore, but what really does it for me is awesome music, movement, and guard work. 2023 BD unquestionably had that. Kudos to the 2023 Blue Devils. Bravo!
Look I fully understand why the Blue Devils win and that they play these extremely difficult pieces very well, but it's simply not as enjoyable as other shows. It takes so much more investment into the music and understanding of the meaning of the show, whereas corps like Boston and Crown present you with a deep, meaningful show that's easy to understand and listen to. Blue Devils and even Blue Coats are corps that are usually only enjoyable for people who love the display of skill and the flashy shiny kind of shows. I personally much prefer the show to be experienced more like a movie than an opera. And another thing is, I am also not a fan of constant super dense chords. It sounds like all the same chord with no melodic movement when there is too much constant density. Also when you said Blue Devils is like a piercing shimmery kind of sound and Cown is much more rich, I also prefer Crown in that way too. I don't want the sound to pierce through me. I want it to hit me like a brick wall and shake me to my core. I'm not necessarily a Devils hater, I just don't understand why so many people actually enjoy watching them.
