Howdy! Had the pleasure of marching this show this year. This was by far the hardest show I have marched here out of the three years I march, not only because of the drill demand, but because of the choreography demand as well. Also played the cornet solo (super fun stuff) :)
1971, 1972 Garfield alumnus here. I watched Flomarching all season and held my breath each show throughout the season for your solo. Congratulations on your consistency of performance as the season went on. This was one of my favorite Cadets shows since the run & gun 90's. FHNSAB
Anytime I see a new instrument being used, it brings me joy. Especially with cadets! French horn lines in 15 and 16, alto horn last year, and now a cornet this year! Love to see it.
I marched this season and last year and the physical demand was definitely extreme. It’s awesome to hear such positive reaction to our work. Much love.
BOD member here.....we were proud in spring training and that pride maintained all season. You all were amazing Cadets. Period. Something all alumni should be looking at as another legendary Corp that will live on in legend for decades. FHNSAB.
I marched Cadets 23 and honestly the most difficult part of every ensemble was the first 30 mins we repped through the opener. So much running it’s impossible to breathe and it’s all above the staff lmao.
It might just be me, but it feels like you guys have become more positive in your reaction videos over the years, which I love. I always enjoy hearing y’all’s thoughts!
I was at the gym this morning listening to the cadets and thought, “hm, I wonder if funliner will ever react to this…” I walk back to my dorm and I see this. Cool cool.
So I marched mello for this show and oh my god was it so physically exhausting. Our opener left me out of breath every time and there wasn’t any real stationary playing and moving for longer periods of time. Our closer was hard to pull off too because we just kept moving. I lost 30 some pounds over the summer, but I’ll be damned if it wasn’t a fantastic summer
Dude - congrats to you! This has to be top on my list of demanding shows. I look at it as a 12 minute meat grinder, and you guys came out in one piece every time!
Realistically there three groups that I want to get 1st in the coming years Boston - with the work they’ve put in to push the organization to new limits they deserve it. Going from a middle to low top 12 core to being a contender for first. Phantom & Cadets - these are both legends in the organization who had fallen from where they were in the prime but are climbing back up and I want to see them back at the top where i think they belong.
This show was extremely difficult in terms of the physical demands put on each member. I led the medical team and there were 488 separate athletic injuries this past season. The members deserve all the credit for dealing with the demands!
21:25 to the end is particularly poignant now. So sad we’ll never witness where they would’ve gone. Surely back to a gold medal before long had they been able to return. ♥️💛🤍
I know I'm late but I was in guard (flag line). As a vet this was definitely way harder than 22. But in the best ways possible. The drill wasn't as hard for me personally compared to 22 because there was less of it. But it did take a lot more mental commitment to it if that makes sense. And the twirls were insane!
I have to say, the double tonguing in part 2 was clean. It's a FLO issue I noticed on Semi's and Finals night. The delay wasn't set properly so what you're hearing from FLO is mic'd directly from the speakers and isn't lining up properly on the recording.
I felt that Atlas Rising was the most accessable show this year and possibly the crowd favorite from the 6 times I saw them perform it. I went to their community day on June 24 and they only had four short sections of music ready and almost no drill. Exactly 2 weeks later at CrownBeat they had a full show and sounded good. I was blown away at the advancements they had made. I look forward to a new era for The Cadets in their new home in Erie PA and think this is a good indicator of where they are going. Thanks Funliner for all of your videos.
Marched 22 and 23. 22 was actually way harder physically. 22 was straight marching the entire time which was very tiring and hard on the body. It was also 200bpm in opener and in the accel in part 4. 23 had more difficult choreo and design process tho but had alot more rest playing wise. It was less difficult drill in terms of tuba tho other sections def had hard drill.
7:30-:32 The long phrase you mentioned in part 2, along with ballad 1 and the 5th movement, was actually part of a British brass band piece by Paul Lovatt Cooper entitled……….. Immortal
My absolute favorite show of all time is the 1987 Garfield Cadets. I havent really "loved" a Cadets show since... I've kinda liked a few but haven't "loved" a Cadets show since then. I absolutely love this show. DCI absolutely NEEDS The Cadets to be good.
Thank you from the Board of Directors! The members, volunteers and staff were astounding. I personally haven't had goosebumps on goosebumps in a very long time from any Corp, but this year's Cadets........WOWSA.
Bold choice to start with a human centipede, but it was a fantastic show. The uniforms really grew on me; they look very comfortable and easy to move in. I could see more “athleasurforms” coming in the near future. This really is the hidden gem show of the season.
When I first saw the uniforms my reaction was WTH. But they really do work with this show. And while the cadets have done some serious drill in their traditional uniforms in the past there’s way more body movement now than ever. Now it’s become my favorite 2023 show, love watching it, and can say I like the uniforms now.
Followed by a company front. Not in the way you might expect but it's there. This multi cam angle misses it but it's quite obvious in the high cam version. And fun!
After you guys finish the reactions for the shows from this season it would be dope to see a reaction to some of y’all’s all time favorite shows. Like ever since Everett alluded to BD 2012 being his favorite show I was thinking it would be cool for him to react and explain why
So I actually was apart of the color guard for this show and this show was HARD! I think movement 1 was the hardest because once you started running, you never stopped! But this was probably the most fun show that I have ever gotten to perform for, the music hits made everything you did feel “epic” if that makes sense 😅
So was the plan the entire time to add the narration as far into the season as it was? I love how the show came together as the season went on and the changes to the closer from the beginning of the season was so great.
@@derekgross3571 Heh, the show truly grow on me all year long. Then I saw them in Allentown and felt that the narration wasn't necessary and took me away from the beauty of the show. I understand why they did it, and I am not a "NO NARRATION EVER" guy, but I didn't think it added anything. Absolutely great show though.
I'm not sure but I did hear early in the season that the judges may have been struggling to understand the show concept. The limited narration certainly helps to explain some of the key themes of the performance. I didn't find the narration distracting as many shows. Loved this performance.@@derekgross3571
@@Ralph981 I know. But there wasn't *any* until Allentown. Having watched the show all year, and growing to love it, it was jarring, is all. And, to me, unneeded. But I am just a schlub in the stands and they broke the 5-6-7 logjam quite decisively, so what do I know?
Sometimes I learn so much from you guys, about the current state of drum corps. And then there are times I couldn't disagree with you more. There was no There, there. Drum solo/Fanfare/drumsolo/hornshowoff/drumsolo/hornsoloballad/drumsolo/something/drumsolo/ending. I was never engaged with a story or a melody. Yeah, you read the description of some blah blah blah at the beginning that meant nothing. Yes, parts were very difficult, but what anything meant was meaningless. They checked a lot of boxes for the judges, and it was terribly apparent that that was what the show was. Box Checking.
I have a question for any marchers from 2022 or this past year. In both shows, there was one section where the hornline marched backwards onto their heels (at end of the ballad last year and during the Immortal ballad this year). Is that a meant to be an homage to Cadets slow-marching style from the past? Are there other Cadets visual homages present in those shows? I also saw the Garfield “G” near the end of the show.
5:00 YES! I agree, this uni exposes the marching big time!! I’ve been saying this since I saw their show in Broken Arrow. I seemed to just get sucked into watching their marching. Also, most of the season they had shorter socks, which for whatever reason felt like it Really really exposed all the good bad and the ugly with their marching. They added longer socks, which idk how, but it really helped to smooth out that issue for me, I wasn’t just constantly watching their marching! One other point, I forgot that Cadets lead out on the right foot in their marching style…I’m almost positive they’re the only corps that does that (?)
As great and enjoyable as Cadets were this year it seems silly to comment on their socks covering their ankles, yet I noticed the same thing and I agree with you! It really did seem to complete the lower part of the uniform.
I love this show. I think this will be a huge springboard for them going into 2024. The only thing that sticks with me is how much I wish I could watch it with the corps in a traditional Cadets uniform.
This show couldn’t have been done in the traditional uniforms. Imagine trying to do a somersault with a shako. The horn line does a lot of different movements that would not have been possible in the traditional uniforms with shakos.
I was a Blue Devils hater for 40 years but you guys have really turned me around. You made me see the light on this show and also Crown 2023-both of which I really wanted to like. You’re excellent ambassadors for BD. Thank you for the great videos.
HB 1 here, it WAS a difficult show to march. Each part of the show would wear you out, made me physically the best shape I have ever been in. Glad you all enjoyed watching as much as we loved performing it! HBHBHB
I was on the 3rd row 50 yard line- they sounded fantastic and were MOVING. They had one thing a lot of groups didn’t have.. an obvious dedication to drill writing complex stuff.
Thought what they ended up doing with this show was incredible. Was not much of a fan of the theming or design, but they executed it to to such a level that the 5th place was well deserved. Loved the musical repertoire, very classical Cadets drill (tho I was missing a Cadets kick and Z-pull). Think if they can modernize a little more in their design or create a more cohesive overall show they could be fighting for a medal. They certainly have the musical and marching ability to do so.
Adding the voice in the opener made what was already good, even better..thanks to the FUNLINER guys for highlighting the beauty and difficulty of the 23 program..and to the marchers:C'est Magnifique..Now on to 2024 RISING!..BTW My favorite show in case you haven't guessed lol
I saw this show at Big, Loud and Live before your comments and enjoyed it. But, after listening to your reactions I think it is one of my favorites. That cornet solo was off the charts.
Living the reaction content so much! It's great to see your thoughts on all these world class shows. I would love to see some open class reactions as well! I'm obviously biased but I think open class as a whole did some great work this year and I would love to hear your thoughts!
I never realized how good this show is. It truly looked exhausting 😭😭 it reminds me of Boston 2018 I honestly felt that show was so demanding and Boston was 5th too
The double tonguing in movement II was clean. The phasing you thought you heard was either the poor dome acoustics or poor mic placement and quality from Flo. If you listen to this part in open air stadiums and in the lot it was almost always clean, especially late in the season.
If you haven't done so already, go check out the main source music for this show! There are a couple good videos on RU-vid of the Black Dyke Brass Band performing "Immortal" by Paul Lovatt Cooper.
At first I was not a fan of these uniforms/costumes but there are parts of the show there is no way they could have done in their traditional uniforms with shakos. At 14:56 I couldn’t imagine doing somersaults in the wool uniforms with shakos.
Hmmm. Not sure. When I watch classic Cadets like 2015 I often think that show could have been improved if they were not in traditional uniforms so they could fill all the dead space on the field with people doing somersaults.
Guys! Do NOT talk through the most beautiful ballad of 2023! Listen to it, take in the beauty and then pause the video to make your comments. Sheesh, I'm glad I'm not sitting beside you in the stands! lol Seriously, love your genuine reactions and your comments. Looking forward to the next one. 👍😎
I was thinking the same. I would love to see them talk about shows like Phantom Regiment 1996 (One of the greatest chords in dci history) Phantom Regiment 2008, Vanguard 1999, Vanguard 2009, Madison Scouts 1996, 1997 (with imo the loudest crowd reaction to any show ever). Cadets 2000/2011, the Cavaliers shows between 2000-2003, with 2003 arguably having some of the most difficult drill in dci history. And can’t forget the 90’s Blue Devils- ‘96 ‘97 ‘99 ‘95 (a show that was way far ahead of its time).
