Sweden has a deep rooted tradition of having great and funny commercials. This is due to the fact that back in the day commercials were not allowed on TV. (When this changed it opened up for other channels and cable to generate profit and therefore exist.) However, when you went to the movie theater, you would not want to miss the 20-30 min of "reklam" commercials shown before the movie started, because of the great bonus entertainment! It was, and perhaps still is (I live in the US nowadays), similar to a permanent Super Bowl commercial experience.

I think those commercials were dubbed, because I recognized all the Vattenfall commercials from the late 90's and they were all in swedish. Granted, the one with the men in the "Sweden in the 1950's" gym didn't have any dialogue, but the one in the tattoo shop was definitely dubbed from swedish and didn't sound like that originally. (The last one, with the construction workers and the electric drill, used the original audio.) One I recommend looking up offline is the hilariously svenglish mistake Locum made for one of they newspaper/magazine xmas ads. That one was clearly made by someone who didn't study enough english in school. One that was deliberately playing on words was the old Electrolux commercial for their vacuum cleaners in the 60's, who did a european marketing campaign with the tagline "Nothing sucks like an Electrolux" and a picture of a vacuum cleaner with the mouth piece of it held toward the leaning tower of Pisa.

3:44 - These specific version of the ads were never shown in Sweden. The reason these altered ads are in English is because they were specially made (or dubbed) for the ad firm's portfolio. The only people who would watch these are either prospecting international clients or judges for international ad awards. If you go to any ad firm's RU-vid channel you will most likely find English versions of all their non-English commercials. Same thing happened before the Internet, but they were instead kept in the firm's archive and sent to clients upon request.

For classical Swedish humour - the GEMS of Swedish culture! Hasse och Tage, Povel Ramel and others of that calibre - often so painfully spot on - that politicians have cowered from their ridicule - Especially Tage Danielsson's monologue on Nuclear Power - changed the face of Swedish nuclear politics! Such sharp wit, scathing humour - that is unrelenting and sharp as a razorblade! I hope that you will enjoy!

The first one has all the signs of being made by Roy Andersson, a great film director that's more famous and appreciated abroad than in Sweden. He has made more than 300 commercials since 1969. Once you get to know his style you immediately recognise his works. He has only made four movies since the 70's, 2000-2019. They are a little weird and artistic but really great.

You could react to the swedish fascination of the artist Eddie Meduza, banned by mainstream, loved by everyone using snus. It would be interesting to hear what someone with experience from the 'outside' would say about a phenomena not working (at all) outside of Sweden, except maybe for Norway. Imagine Johnny Cash, but far over the top. "A boy named Sue" could be a Meduza song, one of the cuter and less extreme ones. The guy was a musical genius but could help himself from critizing government beyond the limit where freedom of speech ended, couldn't help himself from repeatedly gential jokes or songtitles. A musician with Tourette syndrome if there ever was one. His manager, another famous person with more in common with a cartoon than reality, was pissed because his absolutely best tunes got lyrics that was impossible to go mainstream. He also wrote "serious" music like Rockabilly, pop and close to the swedish "dansband" music but were an impossible mainstream celebrity because of "the other stuff". His song "Reaktorn läck i Barsebäck" ("the nuclear plant in Barsebäck is leaking") came as a comment to Three Mile Island, later he passed it on to the rockband Europe, today it's the one song "every" dance party in latin america closes with (Himno a la banda) which kind of proves his qualities as a music writer. Before you do a reaction video on this guy you should do some research I think, and listen to some songs, maybe translate/read the lyrics, find out more about the fascination that swedes have. Question is, the guy is super-intelligent, why do he do this stuff, waisting his chance to a 'real' career and to the brink that all audible media boycotted him? Why do so many swedes find it likeable, even some mainstream artists that keep it as a secret? Why do some hate it just as much? What's in our souls that appeal to this madman? You don't have to go as deep as into his home-made cassettes from Studio Ronka (Studio Wank) under a different alias, the LP's he got out there is enough to discover the phenomena. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zCDeduPvcBo.html

I agree! Eddie Meduza/Erroll Nordström - was an underrated musician/singer who is mainly appreciated and infamous for his more silly songs about masturbation, Sex, alcohol, homophobia, a bit of racism and generally making an effort to be as obnoxious as possible! All in line with the "RAGGARE" subculture! Among which he is probably most popular! A lot of preteens - including myself was impressed with his irreverence! Imagine a mix of UK's Ian Dury, Sex Pistols and "Cherry Poppin' Daddies" - without a filter - high as a kite - in a Rockabilly format! A bit like Primus - "wynonas big brown beaver" - but literal and no innuendo! Well worth exploring!

Another contributing factor that they both have Swedish and English spoken, is that back in the day, commersials was only shown in theathers (cinemas) and abroad. It was only when TV3 and ZTV (Swedish but with HQ in England) started, the TV-channels got to show commersials. TV in Sweden was not allowed to show commersials since they were operated/financed/regulated by the state. This is a 90´s thing that evolved to what it is today..... I can't recall seeing a single english commercial on TV here. Use of english or an english speaking foregin character sure, but a commecial completely in english... Never. That's weird. First thing that popped in my head was "Why is it in english?". Btw I've never seen a single one of these either regardless. Plenty of other Vattenfall and Treo commercial though.

check out "Nisse - from Manpower" and the ICA commercials. Those old ones you shown was quite bad.

There's a whole ton of responses to that last add that you just *have* to see. ;-) I'll share them as a comment to this one.

Hi Andrew! Love your stuff! I'm born and raised in Sweden, so a Swede all the way - BUT I love to travel - so among other places I've been to the US at least half a dozen times, worked in Denmark and Saudi Arabia, etc… So I'm quite aware of the social differences between different cultures! THIS - makes me appreciate your videos even more! If you are looking for Swedish humour - in Swedish? Then I'd like to recommend - on one hand - "He who laughs loses" - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eJd8vPenvgQ.html For the WORST Dad-Jokes, cheap puns and UN-PC Humour! On the other hand I warmly recommend stand up by among others - Özz Nujen - A Curdish immigrant with often spot on observations - In Swedish! Also Magnus Betnèr, Björn Gustafsson and Måns Möller! For an expats stand-up about Sweden in English - Al Pitcher! I especially love his bit about Swedish sugar addicted kids shovelling - lördagsgodis! LÖRDAGSGODIS, Fredagsmys and Swedens Relationships with COFFEE, Sugar and CANDY! Could be funny talking points? Or what do you think? Please feel free to contact me if you would like a dialogue? Keep up the good work and I'm Wishing you a Wonderful Weekend! With Fredagsmys and LÖRDAGSGODIS! Take care! Swedish Bob
