I’ve heard some ATC in the truck I drove for a little company and they also referred my truck as the Christmas tree because of my lights. And me as Santa Claus it was hilarious to hear the pilots reading back speed bird [...] give way to Santa then continue to 23L. It got me laughing every time, especially when it was new pilots that didn’t know that I delivered to that airport once a week on the airport area. I’m not driving trucks anymore so the glory days are gone I guess.

The tugs are the vehicles they use to move the airplanes. They need to request access to use certain paths just like the planes do. This guy was a super tug, meaning he can move some heavy loads. Unfortunately he was taking his sweet time and received the wrath of Steve (designated "mediocre" tug). When jetBlue joined in, that was icing on the burn cake.

Why do they shorten 4L? I can understand shortening 31L from KE to avoid the intersection with 4L, but I don't see why it makes sense to shorten 4L, especially since it seems like they already cross 31L anyway. Can anyone clear this up for me?

love these tapes..now is the tug what they use to move planes? what is speedbird? cactus is sw airlines correct ? Do all controllers use the same names...will cactus be cactus in another part of the country ? If there is a new airline how do they come up with a name everyone agrees with ?
@H89SA
@H89SA 9 лет назад
1. Yes 2. "Speedbird" is a callsign used by British Airways 3. "Cactus" is US Airways callsign (former America West Airways) 4. Yes, "Cactus" is "Cactus" everywhere in the world 5. It depends on the company. If it is similar to the company name and also if the name is untaken, which is not hard to understand "on air", they will use that. For example, Virgin America (callsign: "REDWOOD") got its own callsign due to the airline hub being in San Francisco, an area known for the giant Redwood trees.

As a non aviation person, what does Steve mean when he sometimes refers to a runway as being “shortened”?
@raverdeath100
@raverdeath100 3 года назад
loosely, an international runway is 2500m - 4000m in length (it varies a lot). when a runway is marked "short" it's around 1600m upwards (again, it varies). if the runway is shortened then it's usually for maintenance or other reasons. most heavy jets can take off on a shortened runway but it depends on the weather, weight of plane and the thrust it can deliver to ascertain whether the jet can safely attain take off speed.
@TheCarnivalguy

The "Mothership" was probably this one: www.airliners.net/photo/Virgin-Atlantic-Airways/Boeing-747-443/2567675/L/, it can be heard later on in the video, callsign "Virgin". You get the idea ;)

Mothership? .. 747 or a380 maybe?
@vbscript2
@vbscript2 6 лет назад
He was responding to a Virgin America A320, so he referred to a Virgin Atlantic (probably 747) aircraft as the 'mothership.' For most airlines, they would use the term 'company' to refer to another aircraft from the same company, but in the case of Virgin, Virgin America and Virgin Atlantic were two different companies which had different callsigns, so it wouldn't have technically be correct to call it the "company 747." So he just called it "the mothership" instead as a joke.

The callsign should ideally resemble the operator's name or function and not be confused with callsigns used by other operators. The callsign should be easily and phonetically pronounceable in at least English, the international language of aviation. For example, Air France's callsign is "Airfrans"; 'frans' is the phonetic spelling of 'France'. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airline_codes
