Final curtain call for the Broadway Funny Girl at the August Wilson Theatre. After the curtain call, Lea Michele delivered a speech and did a special performance of “My Man”. Filmed on September 3rd, 2023 at the August Wilson Theatre.
What the hell was wrong with the producers to not cast Lea from the beginning? They would have had a Tony winning show resulting in a much greater box office.
@Marcel_Audubon do you have first hand experience of her bullying? Or are you just repeating what other people have said. Many very talented people are not "Nice" people that does not negate the talent
There's no business like show business. The curtain has come down on Lea Michele's dream to play Fanny Brice. What an incredible performance, what an amazing run. A talent along with some of the greats, Martin, Merman, Channing, and of course Streisand.
@glennnelson-ot8wc: C’mon, grab yourself and chill. Her reputation likely prevented her from opening the revival and desperation by the producers led to her being engaged. And of course who made the stupid decision to hire “Beanie”-no bean pole-Feldstein.
@@bcnmanhattan5022 That is a very difficult score to sing. The range is great, there are not many songs by supporting or co starring cast. The show is Fanny's show
This will not be the last. We hear of the amazing Leah, Michelle I can promise you that she’s got a concert coming up and from what I hear she’s already got another Broadway show lined up.
So sorry I did not get to see Lea perform. We saw Funny Girl three times, twice with Beanie, and once with Julie. The night we saw Julie, Lea was scheduled to perform, and she , for some reason, had to miss both the Saturday matinee and the Evening performance. Of course we were disappointed as we had paid $450 for the front row ticket to see Lea. We were given a refund, and we were eating dinner at a restaurant near the theater where "Funny Girl " is on, and our friend, and Ramin's standin, Jeremiah, told us that Julie Benko was one of the best leasing ladies with whom he had ever worked, so we turned around and bought the same seats again, but this time for $169, LOL. Julie was wonderful. Of course I would have liked to have seen Lea, but could not afford another trip now, and we were happy with Julie's performance. I did enjoy hearing Lea sing "My Man," because it's been left out of this production, and I've always loved that song.
@@Marcel_Audubon Already? Are you kidding? Her first performance was Sept. 6, 2022, and her final performance was on Sept. 3, 2023. She saved their jobs for more than a year. And the producers are closing it as she leaves because there is no one that can take her place, or could have saved the show. Nice try though - what you don't know is a lot.
@@MikeA15206 everyone is replaceable, especially bullies - she ran the show to the ground. Successful musicals run for years - decades even. The house was half empty the last couple of months. Glee fanatics could only afford to buy so many tickets as most of you work at minimum wage.
@@Marcel_Audubonwhat do you call what you are doing by posting all of these nasty comments? Sounds like bullying to me. Lea Michele has endured far worse than anything she was accused of (which was basically being young, talented & driven which made others jealous of her success). If the goal was to ruin her career, the effort massively failed. Lea is more popular now than ever.
Thank you so MUCH for posting this. I didn't realize the show was closing for good...or is it just for Lea Michelle? This was so wonderful so see and hear her speak and then sing My Man too !!!! Carol from Fort Worth, TX
I have news if anyone is interested, not only do we have the amazing cast recording, but I found finally a bootleg of the entire show with the amazing Leah Michelle as Faye Bryce granted if you wanna look for what I found, you’ll have to type in girl who falls in love and an actress because for whatever reason the person who posted it didn’t have didn’t write the title, funny girl, but either way title differences it died if you type it in if you type that in if you type In Girl who falls in love and becomes an actress you’ll find it and I and Lee isn’t it Lee is the one starring in that bootleg so if you wanna see it, just follow the prompts that I’m giving here and you can have the cast recording.
I am very happy for her, and the cast, that they got to continue when it appeared that it would not. Not to mention the people who wanted her to fail and those in the public who did not look at the timing of the things she was accused of doing nor her former cast mates who did not accuse her of anything, especially Ryan Murphy, who I have to believe, would have taken her to task if she did do the things she was accused of doing over 3 years and, primarily, after her fiancè overdosed and died....had she done what they said she did, she would not have been kept on by Murphy and surely would not have been offered this role after Ms. Feldstein, a talented young lady, it was believed, could not carry this particular show, which depends entirely on she who plays Fanny Brice. I wish her more success and more opportunities, now...and in finishing, just want to say that it was brave of her to enter the scandal that this show was and come out of it a year later with pride and happiness.
'Oh my man I love him so' was not from Funny Girl. It was never in Funny Girl. It was a sashay song sung in the Zigfield Follies by Fanny Brice. Barbra got a movie "curtain call" in which she did a star turn by 'turning' My Man into a torch song (She even requested changes to Send in the Clowns). It was very dramatic, a big plume in Bar's hat.
@@Marcel_Audubon she wasn’t off key you jerk if it was Julie or beanie, who would send it you wouldn’t have a damn problem with it. You know it. You’re just angry because it was late.
@@rcmkps4528 tell me about it talk about pulling rubbish right out of the air just so leave Micheal heater can sound smart and I don’t mean you when I say leave Michelle hater I’m talking about the person you responding to.
Does anyone else remember that Lea played the role of the little girl in the original production of "Ragtime?" Her curtain speech in FG includes the best--sorry Babs--rendition of My Man, EVAH! The original French song, Mon Homme, still, however, belongs to Edith Piaf and remains unsurpassed even by Pam Gems.
I truly truly hope this experience humbled her and made her an even better human being than she thought she was before. On to bigger and greater things Miss Michele.
@@Marcel_Audubon people CAN change dude wtf she's not 21 anymore, she's a grown ass woman, ofc she change it. She apologized for what she did in the past. Y'all need to get over it and move
Oh my God in heaven, will you just let it go that was proven to be lies never mind the fact that everything that you’re referring to was 10 years ago and a chunk of change at this point drop it.
If anybody still thinks that beanie, Feldstein or Julie Benko is better than Leah, Michelle than you need mental help I’m sorry, but Lee was the one who was destined for this role. Julie makes a good standby but that’s it and Feldstein well enough said about that the better.
I guess it was because the number is not included in the original musical, so they didn't rehearsed it. "My Man" was the real Fanny Brice's signature song and it was added to the movie.
@@rithond I know. It’s probably because the producers didn’t want to pay to have the charts made or another song would have changed the union contract.
@@Marcel_Audubon you’re probably right, she demanded too much. I mean who would even want to hear her sing again after she hurt you so. Off with her head. My new motto - No Divas in show-business. Give me talentless sweet girls any day of the week. Where is Beenie , btw?
Like her or not best performance should be best performance...the Tony category is not presented as " best performance of a Lead Actress in a Musical in a role that she originated" !!
Who are you gonna follow Lea with. Everything about the tepid version is intact. The only change made was finally hiring the girl that everyone in America knew had wanted that role for years. Lord knows. She auditioned long enough to sample the goods. Only the producers didn't quite realize that. Can you imagine David Merrick letting this golden egg tarnish in a year? Not on your life. He would have had Rihanna already lined up.
Without Lea… this show would have shuttered in Summer 2022 after the Tony’s… heck they didn’t even perform that year at the Tonys and just 1 nomination.
Saw the original with Barbara Streisand, albeit as a young teenager. Also saw her in the film version. To me, there will only be one Funny Girl, and her name is Barbara Streisand.
Only one actress could sing Desiree, and that was Glynis Johns, who actually wasn't a singer. That didn't stand in her way, as her performance of Stephen Sondheims most famous song was definitive. He wrote that piece overnight for Glynis Johns, who's Desiree he championed more than other heavies did. Typically, Steve Sondheim was right on key.
Hello Dolly WAS Carol Channing. Barbra Streisand as Dolly Levi was a disastrous decision that left a cool impression of the musical story. It robbed movie actress/Broadway legend Carol Channing of her rightful mortality. Barbra did even more damage to Clear Day by wiping it off the map. At least Bette Midler was old enough to play a widow.
It's not. The version Lea did in Glee was almost exactly as Ms. Streisand sang it. This was different in a couple of places. You'll hear the difference when you stop insisting on judging Lea.
@@patricelockertanthony7630 exactly thank you she made it her own here and the reason it sounded exactly like Barbara and glee is because I think she was directed to do that and please know when I say that I’m not trying to be disrespectful to you in any way shape or form I swear I’m not. I’m completely agreeing with you if anything.
I have to agree. I like Lea and really wanted her to nail it. But, if you spend your entire career aspiring to be Barbra Streisand and then copy her legendary Funny Girl closing night routine, you'd damned sure better bring the goods... and alas, she didn't. It's not bad, obviously (Lea's no lightweight, to be sure), but it doesn't come close to matching Streisand's artistry. I really wish she'd created her own unique closing night performance that allowed her to showcase her own talent and identity as an performer, rather than doing a so-so imitation of Streisand. Hopefully now that she's gotten this out of her system, she can chart her own course forward.
Nonsense. The song was written for Mistinguette, Maurice Chevalier’s girlfriend. Ziegfeld bought for Brice, who made it her own. Nobody denies it’s a French song. Streisand liked the song but not its anti-feminist message. The other great singer associated with it was blues legend Billie Holidar.
Darling Lea has copied Barbra in every way she conceivably could--but that's okay--might as well learn from the best--and the original. :) Happy Lea got to do this--
