Furled leaders are all I use for multi species fly fishing. They are supple, easy to make, and you make custom size them to your need both in terms of strength and length. I think of them as shock leaders.
Multi Species Fly Fishing is a method I use to catch fish instead of flinging my arms around hoping to have a good day on the river. Most people don't have the time, cash or resource to buy a specific rig for every ish they target. One rod tp rule them all . . . Seriously one rod, one reel, one line and a tin full of flies, baits and scents should be all you need to catch all the fish you want.
How to Start Multi Species Fly Fishing: It starts with the general body of water you fish: warm water, cold water or saltwater. From there it's a matter of looking at the range of species in those waters, which species will you most likely encounter, and what balance between power and delicacy do you need to catch species in that range?
Multi Species Flies
Simple flies that can be tied quickly with only one or two materials. Synthetic or natural materials don't matter. This is practical approach. Hand-to-mouth fly tying. The longer it takes to tie a fly the fewer flies you will have available at any given moment to fish.
Multi Species Fly Fishing for Beginners
Start with a single rod and a single line type. You can either buy your flies or learn to make them yourself. I'd recommend buying your first batch just so you can get out on the river quickly. It's far more important to catch your first fish on a fly rod than to try and make everything yourself.
Multi Species Fly Fishing for Starters
Start with the kinds of waters that populate your area. If you live in a warm water climate, buy a warm water rig. Slat? Buy a saltwater rig. Cold? You get it.
Multi-species Fly Fishing Gear
Simpler the better. Simpler means less to up keep. Less up keep means more time fishing!
Multi species fly fishing rod
For warm water I'd recommend a 7 wt fly rod, The material and type will depend on preferences.
For cold water, I no experience, but I would probably buy a 4 wt.
For the salt: 10 wt and be done with it!
Multi species fly fishing reels typically accompany the rod's size. The problem is when old school chaps like me who prefer fiberglass or bamboo need heavy reels to counterbalance the heaviness of glass and bamboo. The modern reels use lighter materials and drilled out holes making it nearly impossible to properly balance with an old-style heavier set up.
Starting multi species fly fishing is accessible to anyone because it takes into consideration your neck of the woods, your waters, the fish you target, and it get you out of this think that everything have to be a certain way. Enjoy this series and let me know what you like best.

Very nice. I’ve tied my own long leaders from different length sections of knotted mono. They’re tapered along their length as you describe. They’re intended as fly casting leaders, specifically. This furled shock leader idea is a pretty good plan, though.
@BlackWarriorLures
@BlackWarriorLures 5 лет назад
Yeah, I've used knotted leaders in the past. I never liked them much, and switched to straight mono. When I found other fly fishermen tying their own furled leaders, it was obvious the application could go well beyond fly casting. I'm surprised this method is not more widely utilized in all forms of fishing.

@@BlackWarriorLures ive done the knotted mono leaders before, but am definitely going to try your furled leader for trout here in the pnw. i wonder if braided fishing line would work for a dry fly leader.

I tie my own "tapered" leaders get some 3-4' of .017" line double surgeon tied to 2-3' of .015' double surgeon knotted to .012' then use a tippet ring, and tie on 3-4' of tippet. But furled are awesome for dry flies... Packaged leaders are expensive and stiffer than I like.
@BlackWarriorLures
@BlackWarriorLures 3 года назад
I've done that as well. Give me a furled leader any day. The fish don't care what leader you use. Knotted leaders are too much trouble for me.

Hello BWL. Man I could spend some time with you, if it were possible. I too have been at this for awhile. Started with Orvis braided butts with the tapered tip leaders. They in themselves are a one stop solution to most leader requirements, but in the interest of having many leaders this is the most diverse and economical solution. You just can't beat this type of leader. Thanks man, I'll be back. well heck ya I subbed.

Damon, you didn't say what type of knot you used on the two ends at the start. Also this shock leader will give you a little more forward weight which will help you cast better. Similar to using a weight forward fly line (my favorite) I use straight mono as a leader/tippet and never had a problem with it "hinging" as you described. Maybe that I stretch my leaders beforehand helps (?)
@BlackWarriorLures
@BlackWarriorLures 5 лет назад
You use any loop knot to hook it over something to stretch it. Other than that you don't need the knot.
@kemobam
@kemobam 5 лет назад
Again, very well made and informative vid. What is the reason for stretching it, Mr.D?
@BlackWarriorLures
@BlackWarriorLures 5 лет назад
Because the line comes off the spool in tight circles, and you'll never get it twisted like I way doing without a tangled mess.
@zenbooter
@zenbooter 5 лет назад
@@BlackWarriorLures Forgive me , do not mean to step on your show, but in answer to Kieth Henry; the fly line should also be stretched, do it by stripping off the reel 30' then stretch it every 3' or so till its all done to the leader then reel it back on the spool.
@BlackWarriorLures
@BlackWarriorLures 5 лет назад
@@zenbooter Never woulld have thought of stretching the fly line itself. Thx for the tip.

Braid is fine. There won't be any stretch with braid. They used to use silk and horse hair years ago.
