Furled leaders are all I use for multi species fly fishing. They are supple, easy to make, and you make custom size them to your need both in terms of strength and length. I think of them as shock leaders.
Multi Species Fly Fishing is a method I use to catch fish instead of flinging my arms around hoping to have a good day on the river. Most people don't have the time, cash or resource to buy a specific rig for every ish they target. One rod tp rule them all . . . Seriously one rod, one reel, one line and a tin full of flies, baits and scents should be all you need to catch all the fish you want.
How to Start Multi Species Fly Fishing: It starts with the general body of water you fish: warm water, cold water or saltwater. From there it's a matter of looking at the range of species in those waters, which species will you most likely encounter, and what balance between power and delicacy do you need to catch species in that range?
Multi Species Flies
Simple flies that can be tied quickly with only one or two materials. Synthetic or natural materials don't matter. This is practical approach. Hand-to-mouth fly tying. The longer it takes to tie a fly the fewer flies you will have available at any given moment to fish.
Multi Species Fly Fishing for Beginners
Start with a single rod and a single line type. You can either buy your flies or learn to make them yourself. I'd recommend buying your first batch just so you can get out on the river quickly. It's far more important to catch your first fish on a fly rod than to try and make everything yourself.
Multi Species Fly Fishing for Starters
Start with the kinds of waters that populate your area. If you live in a warm water climate, buy a warm water rig. Slat? Buy a saltwater rig. Cold? You get it.
Multi-species Fly Fishing Gear
Simpler the better. Simpler means less to up keep. Less up keep means more time fishing!
Multi species fly fishing rod
For warm water I'd recommend a 7 wt fly rod, The material and type will depend on preferences.
For cold water, I no experience, but I would probably buy a 4 wt.
For the salt: 10 wt and be done with it!
Multi species fly fishing reels typically accompany the rod's size. The problem is when old school chaps like me who prefer fiberglass or bamboo need heavy reels to counterbalance the heaviness of glass and bamboo. The modern reels use lighter materials and drilled out holes making it nearly impossible to properly balance with an old-style heavier set up.
Starting multi species fly fishing is accessible to anyone because it takes into consideration your neck of the woods, your waters, the fish you target, and it get you out of this think that everything have to be a certain way. Enjoy this series and let me know what you like best.
