Much MUCH improved! I shudder to think how many hours you've spent on this portrait, but results are definitely worth it!

A wonderful transformation, and it was fascinating to see how difficult and painstaking the process was.

Much improved! Still a bit pale, yes, but with SO much damage, I think it is a good compromise. Well done!

Yes! Glad to see a new up-load! As always, thank you for the history lessons. I had no idea plantation owners had been compensated for losing their workforce. I wonder how it would’ve gone here in the States if that had been an option. Obviously with no single ruling, all- powerful entity nor a treasury to match, it was not an option. Nice retouching, a lot of work! Lol, but I am hoping the client wants to further the face and hands to better match the legs and neck.

Fine work.

The face definitely looks better, not like a mask like when it came in. Of course the client gets to decide the finish, but thus far you have brought it so close I think.

He's still so pale, but maybe he was a sickly child. Much improved after all your hard work.

Mr. Bloomfield is the real master here, and I think a huge part of his challenge with "The Young Master" is that it doesn't seem to be that great of a painting to start with. It's a very strange composition. The boy's proportions are off somehow, the neck is too long. Those aren't a little boy's hands. The light on the skin is different than the light on the robe. I believe this portrait was the 19th century equivalent of modern-day shopping-mall hack photographers who crank out fluorescent family fotos. You know what I mean. So, no matter how hard Mr. Bloomfield works, the picture will still look wrong maybe.

Or perhaps we're all wrong? Mr. Bloomfield says that the subject is from a slaving family in Jamaica. What if the original, ghastly white flesh on the painting was accurate? What if the painting didn't really need retouching at all? That boy sure looked like a zombie to me!
@sus8e462
@sus8e462 2 дня назад
If the boy was naturally that pale, the ears & neck would be, too. It's the huge difference between those skin tones that makes it look so unnatural...

@@sus8e462 I'm sticking with the zombie theory. It makes the painting work for me.

He’s still way too pale in the face for me … he needs warming up a little more

The heavy damage hid some of the flaws with the painting itself. That means that any retouching will expose those weaknesses, like the pale face. You are not going to get it better. This is the best you can do.

the mouth, something not right there

Why Oh Why do you think this young man with an un natural DEATH pallor was the origional look? You can not be serious. Put some color in that face, that portrait can not be shown as it stands right now, Hope the owners want much more natural color so he looks alive and like the fun loving small child the origional artist painted.

@@terryk_ inhale through the nose, hold, exhale through the mouth, hold, inhale, hold, exhale, hold, inhale… Your response suggests an attachment to a certain scenario no one living today can possibly be privy to. Perhaps you are psychic, or you channeled the sitter or the artist? What if this is a portrait of a deceased child who succumbed to a tropical disease?
