Furtwangler was not a technology progress man oriented, but he has been very well recorded in the 40's and 50's (better than Toscanini for exemple)

Das kann ich gut verstehen. Ich finde diese auch besonders toll. Prof Joachim Kaiser (Musikkritiker) hat in einer Folge seiner Serie auch besonders bestimmte Aufnahmen (besonders aus Kriegsjahren) empfohlen. Daher habe ich gezielt nach allen Furtwängler-Aufnahmen gesucht.

Dennis Middlebrooks For me W.A. Mozart was the greatest composer ever! But his symphonies (even his last) were "too light" for me ... The richness of harmonies and musical ideas I hear in Schubert's (last) two symphonies (unfinished and the great C Major) I don't hear even in Mozart's Jupiter! ;)

As Shakespeare's character said, "...comparisons are odorous..." But I know what you mean in asserting this to be the greatest symphony ever. It astonishing on every listening...!

MusikPiratCH Schubert went toe to toe with Beethoven and surpassed him in several works in more (and arguably higher quality) opinions than mine. E.g., compare the Septet to the Octet, this symphony to your favorite of Beethoven's and the "Death and the Maiden" quartet to the C-sharp minor (or your favorite other one).

Karl Pfeiffer Tja, da kann ich nur sagen "leider"! Thomas Andrews hat aber recht! So gehört diese Sinfonie gespielt - nicht so lahm (und allen Extremen entsagend) wie die meisten heutigen Dirigenten! *schauder*

MusikPiratCH auch Ihre Ansicht teile ich nicht.Kaum ein Komponist ist so verkannt wie Sch. Furtwänglers Tempi und Rückungen sind gegen alles wienerische. Geschmäcker sind eben verschieden. Franzosen und Italiener spielen Schubert (und Bruckner) ohne Wissen. Notenspielen können viele. Nix für ungut!

Karl Pfeiffer Naja, Franz Schubert können wir leider nicht mehr fragen, was er von dieser Einspielung hält. Über das "wienerische" bin ich mir auch nicht so sicher. Hat sich doch Schubert selbst bei den Sinfonien immer im Schatten von van Beethoven gesehen, obwohl er mindestens mit der 8. (Unvollendeten) und dieser 9. weit darüber hinaus getreten ist. Immerhin stehen Sie mit ihrer Meinung ziemlich alleine da. Aber wie Sie schreiben ist das auch Geschmacksache. Für mich besteht Schubert v.a. in unübertroffen reicher Harmonik wie Ideen und dies trifft diese hervorragende Aufnahme sehr gut. Auch entdecke ich bei mehrfachem Hören immer wieder Neues. Für mich ebenfalls ein Zeichen hoher Qualität.

MusikPiratCH Schubert brauchen wir garnicht zu fragen. Alles steht in der Partitur.Hätte er diese Temporückungen gewollt, er hätte sie geschrieben.Er war ja auch sonst recht genau. Ob meine Meinung eine Einzelbetrachtung ist bezweifle ich sehr.Lesen Sie nur was Furwängler selber schreibt.Vor allem über Kritiker.

ExVeritateLibertas Furtwangler used to refer to K as "Coca Cola." Uniform, sweet, unobjectionable and devoid of character.

The 'temperature' of this performance in terms of intensity, passion & excitement added to the quality of improvisation make it unbeatable, I reckon, in the whole history of symphonic recordings.

Karl Pfeiffer Ich kann dich verstehen. Das ist halt alles "sehr deutsch" bei Furtwängler, ein sehr deutscher Schubert. Man sollte ihn vielleicht "etwas österreichischer" spielen bzw. dirigieren.

Und dann fällt mir im Nachhinein noch was auf. Gegen Schluss wird das - individuelle - Tempo doch zu schnell. Man hat das Gefühl er will fertig machen, es kommt der nächste Fliegerangriff.

@@holterpolter4756 Apropo Temposchwankungen: Furtwängler ist ein Dirigent mit viel Mut gewesen, er hat diese Große Symphonie von Schubert enorm befruchtet und Tempi gewählt die darüber hinaus der Partiturangaben gingen und damit hat er sich unsterblich gemacht ! Bravo !!

I'd suggest you read up on it - at worst, he did dodgy deals in order to survive and save his Jewish musicians. I am personally of the opinion that he did all he reasonably could to subvert the Nazis before and during the war. As he said himself, "Sometimes it is braver to stay at your post than to flee."
