My cabin had a little 2 circuit fuse box, it had a handle that had to be down to open it which was a hazard as it was never grounded lol. It was fed with a piece of 10/3 wire from a 20amp double breaker in my main breaker box. One of the fuses recently burned out and when I saw they were $6-7 now I just replaced the whole box with a little Square D 30amp 2-circuit load center and a 15amp 2-pole circuit breaker. I had to go 15amp because the wiring in the walls is 14ga. I splurged and even added the little ground bus bar. Those old screw-in fuses are expensive now!

Thanks for the tutorial! Im wondering if it is acceptable to mount a main panel inverted. For instance a new Leviton panel that says bottom feed. thanks!

I have a 100 amp fuse panel that has some circuits/ fuses removed that arnt being used yet others have double lines running to them Can an electrician come in and sort it out by removing the double lines running to them and spreading some out to the unused fuse spots? I’m positive a lot of them are not being used or do I have to upgrade to a breaker panel first? I’m not blowing fuses and have the correct size fuses and I’m not in need of more power I would just like to sort out the panel I also have 3 circuits that are nob and tube which I don’t use any of the receptacles from these , I would like to disconnect these from the panel and run new romex and receptacles to the areas of the house that have the nob and tube receptacles I’m not using I’m completely lost and getting conflicting advice on what’s mandatory any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Just looking for your recommendation for dealing with abandoned wiring. I get different opinions from different electricians I've talked to. Some say all abandoned wiring must be removed. Some say to try to find both ends and wirenut them off separately, in a dedicated junction box labeled DEAD, and still other's recommended to find both ends of the cable, stripping the ends and wire nut the hot, neutral and ground together at both ends, put them in a junction box marked DEAD, so if someone later on decides to reconnect the circuit at either end, the result is a dead short and tripped breakers, warning the homeowner to a problem.
@electricianhub86

Completely removing, or properly junction boxing and perhaps labeling are all acceptable methods.

Awesome video. Just curious, any idea of the date the home was built/wired.? The main fuses look like 100 to 200 amp, which was very large for a fuse panel because most of the fuse panels i have run into are your typical main/range pull out with your 4 branch circuits, typically 60 amps, because by the late 50s or so when we started getting into 100 amp or 125 amp services, breaker boxes were beginning to completely replace the fuse panels. I've never seen a panel like that. Something that could be donated to a museum or exhibit. 😉

@electricianhub86 2 года назад
Great question! You are correct originally they had very small services 40/60 amps I've seen them with lighting only. And then they Incorporated the range later on. I would say this house was built in the 50s, our area held on to the fuse box for a long time. I've seen them as late as the '70s. Great comment thank you!

Just moved into an old house with 2 fuse box panels,not sure how to deal with them,all outlets are only 2 pronged,so im.also concerned about wiring needing redone,how can you tell when replacing a panel to a breaker box if you should have wiring redone?

A good electrician can pull out a receptacle and see the wire gauge. They will know if it's appropriate.

Fuse boxes are never terribly hidden. It's either shared with another fuse, mislabeled, or somebody broke the law during construction and didn't add one.
