I recommend viewing the newer video at • Fusion360: New and Imp... after viewing this one.
A newer version of this model is now available at
www.thingivers...
In this video I design an open-top box with finger-joints for cutting on my Glowforge laser. All of the fingers in this model are consistent in width, and the number of fingers automatically adjust based on the dimensions of my model.

A big thank-you for the clear no-nonsense, straight to the point video. I've had success following through your video for the third time . This has everything to say about my abilities with following instructions and is no reflection on the instructions in the video, which are absolutely superb. - Many, many thanks for your generosity.

I am brand new to Fusion 360 and laser cutting and your videos have vaulted my skill so far forward! Thanks!

These are really good lessons. I have a huge smile on my face from completing both this one and the previous lesson without any glitches. I see myself reusing these models many times, thank you.

Really appreciate your video ... starting to catch on to the flow of working through a basic box.

Awesome. As a new user to fusion I love your math way to it all, it seams like the right way to do things. Very educationally good work.

Thanks so much for posting this video! It took me a couple hours to get through it but it's such time saver.

Not sure why, but @ ~17:30, when you set the quantity to hfingers, the direction kept switching to perpendicular to the desired direction (i.e. along x). I actually scrapped the whole process twice, until I finally let the video proceed to where you increase the height... when I increased the height BEFORE the rectangular pattern operation, the problem disappeared. Not sure where that came from :) Only commented in case someone hits the same snag. This idea is exactly what I needed by the way. Thank you for taking the time to walk through it!

Take a look at the video I just posted. I don't address this issue specifically, but it came up once or twice when I was working through the steps to improve the box. I'm not sure what causes it--if the problem I had is the same as yours--because it hasn't happened consistently to me. But, one thing that seems to be important is having the initial height of the box to be large enough so that you have room to cut at least 2 notches into the panel while you're building your design. You can then decrease the height of the box, if needed, and things seem to still work.

Hello, I watched this over and over and for some reason I cannot get past 9:34... you select the extruded feature in the bottom left hand work space and say "copy" this feature.. but I have. O ray to copy a feature like that or I am just missing a hotkey or drop down menu somewhere, because when I continue on with the video and work I notice that I so not have 2 linear dimension sketches like you do in the video. This makes it so when I input the new info the notch becomes one large notch across the board rather than several equally spaced ones. Can anybody help me hear? I feel like I'm missing something to ge that second sketch dimension.

This is an awesome tutorial! Thank you for putting it together ( in Fusion 360 2.0.8176 at 17:18 the height needs to be larger or it won't let me press OK for the pattern). Then when I make the box taller the Back panel left fingers are not there. The fix is to then edit the back panel extrude feature after its taller and then the pattern shows up. seems like a Fusion Bug to me.

This comment might not hit the sight of the author of the video after 4 years, but wouldn't it be easier to make the fingers part of the panel sketches and extrude them as a whole to make the component?

Thanks for the video, you have shown me a much better way to solve a common problem I’ve been having. Do you have a suggestion on how we could add a small tolerance on the joints to make a press fit possible?

HM: Great video, thanks. Hope you are still watching for comments. I was about to create the same thing for my high school robotics team to use/learn. With my CNC router these exact fit notches are a problem. They become too tight interference fits. Any tricks to shaving a few thou off the notches or tabs so I can fit my parts together without binding?

Can you post a picture of your full set of parameters as I am stuck on creating the finger pattern for the left side to front joint. As soon as I enter hfingers and fingersp fusion changes the direction. Cheers

when I draw rectangle sketch on the front, it always draws on the back...

I just finished this and had the same issue greyfin10 did. I managed to figure out by manually setting the quantity of fingers to 1, then going back and editing it to take the hfingers variable and that worked. However, that's not why I'm commenting here. The back panel doesn't have the fingers correctly set for height. There's only one finger. At first I thought this was because of what I did with the editing as stated above. However, watching your video to completion, I noticed the same thing in yours. When you raised the height, there's only 1 finger on the back panel rather than 2 like on the front panel. I'm currently at a loss as to how to fix this though as I'm still new to this whole thing. Any suggestions?

Catamarack , I’ll take a look later this evening to see what happening. I think I know what you’re referring to, and I think I recreated it again.
